Minior Pernik vs Montana

Today’s secondary featured game is the A PFG game in Bulgaria between Minior Pernik and Montana. Both sides are battling against the dreaded drop so we should see a fairly interesting game here with neither side able to just sit back in this one.

Minior Pernik are near the bottom of the table because they have a distinct lack of ability when it comes to defending. They’ve shipped an average of over two goals per game all season long and it’s naturally proven to be a real problem for them this season. However, their ability to score goals is really very good with only a handful of A PFG sides having scored more goals than they have this season at home. A surprising 1-2 victory at a superior Slavia Sofia side last match gives the hosts great confidence ahead of this relegation six-pointer and I think it’s fair to say that Minior Pernik even played well against Litex Lovech in the game before that, despite the scoreline at the end of the game showing otherwise. Minior Pernik have the advantage of being a goalscoring side, which is something that no other side around them has, which gives them a massive advantage in the battle against relegation, in my view.

Visitors Montana are likely to be sucked into this relegation whirlpool if they continue to fail to find the net. A freak 3-2 win against Kaliakra last match was very much the anomaly of their campaign thus far as they scored over a seventh of their goals for the season in that one game. Defensively, Montana are a good enough unit to keep some sides out but they’re one of the weakest attacking sides in the division and that has hamstrung them away from home this season, lending great reasoning to the fact that they’ve lost five out of eight times away from home. Indeed, for a strong defensive unit, Montana have actually conceded a lot of goals away from home, averaging conceding nearly two goals per away game, so Montana are generally the side to play against if you want three points at home. To make matters worse for the visitors today, they miss captain Gadzhev and key attacker Chipilov, which effectively minimises Montana’s goal threat and ability to function as a unit so you can see why I have my doubts over the longevity of their quest to obtain points here.

For me, the fact that the hosts score goals and are playing well means a lot here. Montana will try to stifle them and hit them on the break but with two important players missing for Montana today, it’s hard to see them getting a result here. If the hosts turn up as I expect them to then the home win at 4/5 looks generously priced today.

Team news – Minior Pernik miss Tom whereas Montana miss Gadzhev and Chipilov.

Verdict: Minior Pernik to win at 4/5.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Atletico Lanus vs Gimnasia De La Plata – home win at 5/6.

No secret method here; I just think that Schurrer’s Lanus team has far too much firepower for Cappa’s new-look Gimnasia side to deal with. Lanus are conceding goals to a stupid degree with the potency of Camoranesi, Valeri, Castillejos, Regueiro etc. should be far too much for a Gimnasia side to handle, especially when Cappa is making them play attacking football rather than their traditional defensive style. Gimnasia can cause the odd upset but generally lack the firepower to maintain such displays, hence my doubt here. Gimnasia have been beaten by bitter rivals Estudiantes and Olimpo in their last three games as they push on to try and beat off the threat of relegation but it’s just not working for them. Tenacity has long been a strongpoint of theirs so they won’t make it easy for Lanus here but Lanus’ own ability in front of goal should make this a fairly routine home win for the hosts, although they still have work to do to become the respected side in the Primera Division that they think they should be.

Verdict: Atletico Lanus to win at 5/6.

SV Ried vs Salzburg – away win with draw no bet at 5/6.

I like this one a lot! Two out of Ried’s integral Spanish threesome miss this game through injury (Carril and Nacho Rodriguez) leaving only Guillem to carry the team, such has Ried’s dependancy been upon their Spanish players this season. Without their creative influence, Ried revert to the average and morose side that they were last season and that side could be beaten by most sides. Generally speaking, playing against Ried at the Keine Sorgen is a tough game for anyone but Ried look anything but difficult at the moment with just one win from their five games since the winter break, losing three times along the way. They’ve lost three tough away games but have struggled in their home games, drawing 2-2 with Wacker Innsbruck in their last home game so I have my doubts over their ability to beat Salzburg today, especially given that they’ve lost to Austria Vienna, Rapid Vienna, and Sturm Graz in their last five games.

Somewhat ominously, Salzburg have eased into gear over the past couple of games too. It’s about time they did as well, or else they’d have no chance of winning the Bundesliga! Back-to-back wins against SV Kapfenberg and SV Mattersburg respectively whilst keeping two clean sheets has set Salzburg back on the goal trail and confidence is high in the camp as a result. They still miss Swiss defender Schwegler and holding midfielder Mendes da Silva but as long as Wallner and Zarate do the business in attack then I’m not concerned today as two of Ried’s most instrumental attackers are absent today.

I just don’t see Salzburg losing this game, simply put. I think they’re facing what looks like a very average Ried side without their Spanish twosome so the away win with draw no bet cover for a recovering Salzburg side at 5/6 appeals to me here.

Team news – SV Ried miss Nacho and Carril whereas Salzburg miss Douglas, Mendes da Silva, and Schwegler.

Verdict: Salzburg to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Levski Sofia vs Chernomorets Burgas – home win with -1.5 handicap at 5/6.

It’s easy to see how strong this Levski side are mentally given that they lost the Bulgarian “El Clasico” against bitter rivals CSKA Sofia and promptly followed it up by beating Lokomotiv Sofia 2-0. With Dembele as strong as ever up front and Tasevski supporting the Malian international, it’s hard to see many sides resisting what is arguably Levski’s strongest side in years, albeit without the departed Joaozinho. Levski play good football and have already won six out of eight home games this season, averaging scoring over two goals per home game so they’re very much the side to fear here, especially with Litex Lovech in their sights at the top of the table.

You could be forgiven for laughing at this bet had you seen Chernomorets Burgas’ impressive away record in the A PFG this season as far as keeping clean sheets goes. However, they’ve changed manager since the vast majority of those results were obtained and I can’t say that it’s for the better at the moment either. Since switching to a much more adventurous attacking style under Velkov rather than the defensive tactics of Balakov, Chernomorets have managed a draw with a mediocre Akademik Sofia on neutral territory and were humiliated 0-4 by CSKA Sofia last match so Chernomorets have an awful lot to do at the moment to convince me to be afraid of betting against them.

In my eyes, this is the last game that Chernomorets would want to play at the moment and a hungry Levski Sofia really should smell blood in this game. I don’t think Velkov will make Chernomorets play well enough at the back to keep Levski out here and although the visitors are capable of scoring here, I think the odds on Levski beating the handicap at 5/6 are fairly generous considering that the record of Chernomorets Burgas in the A PFG is largely based upon how they played under Balakov, not Velkov.

Verdict: Levski Sofia to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 5/6.

Cobresal vs Universidad de Chile – away win at 5/4.

I don’t think there’s ever been an easy trip to the old copper mines in Chile but if there ever was one then this is it! Cobresal may have won three out of three at home so far this season but they’ve done it with a largely full squad, something which they absolutely don’t have tonight! Their defence is utterly decimated with Jara, Munoz, and Osorio all absent for this game, as well as striker Cuellar, and Cobresal simply don’t have the depth to deal with it. Universidad de Chile may have produced a few strange results at home of late but their away record is immense with ten goals scored during their three away games in the Primera Division, winning twice along the way. Universidad are currently the best side in Chile, in my view, and with no commitments on the continent to deal with, their sole focus is on this game and I think we’ll see a very one-sided scoreline as a result.

Putting a badly-assembled defence in front of the highest-scoring side in Chile at the moment means that Cobresal are in trouble here. For me, the away win for a superior Universidad de Chile side is generously priced at 5/4 and when you consider how many important players miss this game for the hosts tonight, Universidad de Chile should really make it four wins from their last five visits to Cobresal.

Team news – Cobresal miss Rodrigo Jara, Claudio Munoz, Miguel Cuellar, and Victor Osorio.

Verdict: Universidad de Chile to win at 5/4.

Universidad de Concepcion vs Audax Italiano – away win at 11/8.

With just one goal scored over three home games this season, it’s easy to see why Universidad de Concepcion have lost twice and drawn once during their three home games. Indeed, that paltry record means that only an impotent Cobreloa side have scored as few goals at home as they have this season and it sets them up badly for games against all-out-attack sides like Audax Italiano, which is unfortunately who they’re playing tonight! Universidad have played far better away from home than they have at home in the current campaign as they prefer the non-pressure of counter-attacking but they’ve still lost back-to-back games ahead of this clash, leaking seven goals in their last two games, so morale is lowering and with defensive ineptitude soaring, it’s hard to see the hosts getting anything here.

In all seriousness, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more attacking side than Audax Italiano. This side simply does not defend at any stage of the game and you have to take your hat off to them for that. They’ve caused a lot of stirs by beating some of Chile’s elite over the past few years with such fearless attacking displays and such displays have guided them to four wins and one draw from their last five games, bagging eleven times along the way. Audax Italiano are not a side to take lightly and although they can concede against anyone, it takes a very strong display to outscore them and I don’t see the hosts being able to even match them tonight given their dire displays of late.

Therefore, I’m left looking at the away win at 11/8 and thinking that it’s a good value bet for tonight, especially considering that Audax Italiano have won three out of their last five away games against Universidad de Concepcion.

Verdict: Audax Italiano to win at 11/8.

Independiente Medellin vs Deportes Tolima – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Defensively-inept Independiente have shipped six goals in their last three games so their departed defenders are really starting to be missed and should be even moreso against one of Colombia’s finest attacking sides tonight – Deportes Tolima. However, that said, Tolima have a tough trip to Brazil next week to take on in-form Cruzeiro so they may rest players here. Their Copa Libertadores campaign has left them with split loyalties in the Primera A this season and that’s resulted in the majority of their games going over 2.5 goals as they concede goals too easily but always bring a potent threat into their games. Five out of the last six games between these two sides in Medellin have gone over 2.5 goals and with the above factors taken into account, I think there’s a good chance of the same thing recurring tonight.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Hajduk Split vs Split – under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Split derbies are always hard ones to bet on but the under 2.5 goals option looks favourable here. I think it’s fair to observe that nobody really expected Split to do as well as they have since promotion but they’ve been a dogged unit; really hard to beat, and I expect more of the same today in what is effectively their cup final. It helps that they’re facing Hajduk Split at a time when there’s a lot of pressure on their more illustrious neighbours as they continually fail to find the net on a consistent basis following the departure of playmaker Ibricic. The antics of Sharbini lately earned him a suspension as Hajduk tempers fray and they frankly look bereft of confidence in front of goal. Whereas it cannot be denied that Hajduk are the better of these two sides, I don’t see the game gap of quality between them as bookie odds suggest that there is for the present time. What I do see is an under-achieving giant failing to find the net and a determined and well-organised opponent that would rather die than lose this game so I think the under 2.5 goals selection is rather generously priced here, especially as that’s what happened in the reversal of this fixture earlier this season.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Aalborg BK vs FC Copenhagen – away win at 4/5.

FC Copenhagen have had their slip-up by losing 2-0 at a vastly under-strength Midtylland side; now it’s time to get back in business. They need to build up some momentum ahead of the trip to London to face Chelsea next week in the UEFA Champions League and it has to start today with old adversaries Aalborg BK. The internal problems at Aalborg BK have been consistently detrimental to the hosts this season both on and off the field with unhappy personnel, unhappy fans, and a lack of ability in the team and I expect more of the same today, especially with important midfielder Kristensen and attacker Dalsgaard absent for this match. Copenhagen bring a full squad into this match and given that they’ve won seven out of nine away games in the Superligaen already this season whilst averaging scoring over two goals per away game, you have to expect them to do the business today.

Traditionally, this has been a hard venue for FC Copenhagen to play at but that was more when Aalborg BK were a force to be reckoned with, which they’re not nowadays. Although they’re still going to battle hard here, I think it’s fair to say that Aalborg BK lack the firepower and unity to prevent FC Copenhagen from winning this game so my call is the away win here.

Team news – Aalborg BK miss Kristensen, Dalsgaard, Ahlmann, Tracy, and Sten.

Verdict: FC Copenhagen to win at 4/5.

Sochaux vs Olympique Lyonnais – both sides to score at 5/6.

No Ligue 1 side has scored more goals at home than Sochaux have this season so they are certainly worthy of your respect today. They average scoring nearly two goals per home game and have been a feared home side in Ligue 1 for some years, winning seven times and losing just twice during their thirteen Ligue 1 home games so far this season. They’ll have to work hard to beat a superior Lyon side tonight but the possibility is there for them as they look to break the voodoo grip that Lyon have over them. Sochaux are unbeaten in three games, winning two of them, so confidence is high in the Sochaux camp currently. However, a season-ending injury for Brechet leaves Sochaux vulnerable in defence so I think Sochaux’s stiff resolve will be broken here. Similarly, Lyon miss important defender Cris and full-back Cissokho for this game so their already vulnerable defence looks even more fragile than normal. Indeed, you have to wonder if Lyon will have half an eye on their trip to Madrid next week. Either way, they’re missing playmaker Gourcuff for this game so this will be far from a straightforward away win at Sochaux.

No, I’m expecting a much more difficult game than that! I think we’ll see plenty of goals here with both sides missing defensive players and both sides scoring goals for fun so my call is for both sides to score at 5/6.

Team news – Sochaux miss Brechet, Mikari, Butin, Anin, Ideye, Cros, Dias, and Nogueira whereas Olympique Lyonnais miss Ederson, Cris, Gourcuff, and Cissokho.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 5/6.

Vitesse Arnhem vs Heerenveen – home win at 6/4.

Although Albert Ferrer’s Vitesse Arnhem still have a long way to go before they become the feared team that they intend to be, they’re certainly making useful inroads in that direction currently. Their cohesion may be lacking from time to time but their ability to put the ball in the net is undeniable whilst Norwegian hot prospect is backed up by Ismael Aissati and Nemanja Matic in midfield, not to mention Dalibor Stevanovic. Emerging talent Van Ginkel plays his part too and when Ivorian hot prospect Wilfried is fit, I think we’ll see a very dangerous Vitesse Arnhem side indeed. Vitesse are unbeaten at home this year with three wins and one draw from their last four games as they look to push away from the drop zone and with such efficient displays at home leading them into this game, I have to favour them here.

Visitors Heerenveen aren’t an easy side to defeat, however. They may have lost six out of twelve Eredivisie away games so far this season whilst averaging conceding nearly two goals per away game but they’re never a side to simply write off. However, three consecutive defeats lead them into this game so morale is low, especially when you consider that they’ve failed to register a goal in two of those games! The trip to Gelredome hasn’t always proven to be a tough one for Heerenveen but with poor form leading them into this game and the growing ability of their hosts, I think that may change in the near future.

For me, Vitesse’s home displays of late have been enough for me to take a chance on them beating a good Heerenveen side today. The odds of 6/4 are decent enough to take and the visitors are playing badly enouh for the hosts to take a much-needed three points from this game so the home win is my call here.

Team news – Vitesse Arnhem miss Wilfried, Snijders, and Caldirola whereas Heerenveen miss Vandenbussche.

Verdict: Vitesse Arnhem to win at 6/4.

Wisla Krakow vs Widzew Lodz – over 2.5 goals at 23/20.

Although Ekstraklasa games are traditionally hard to call as overs, I still fancy this one to clear 2.5 goals today.

Wisla’s last game ended 3-1 against an inferior Ruch Chorzow and a similar scoreline wouldn’t surprise me today. Wisla’s new star Melikson will have his work cut out as he vys with Georgian midfielder prospect Dzalamidze, who ran the show last match for Widzew Lodz. The ex-CSKA Moscow product is already demonstrating his credentials in the Ekstraklasa despite only joining Widzew on loan last month and if these displays continue then I think he may end up staying in Poland on a more permanent basis. Indeed, this is the kind of game that the Georgian youngster would love to shine in with Wisla Krakow being one of the biggest clubs in Poland so I think he’ll turn up today. If he does turn up then we should see an even more enthused Widzew display than normal and given their ability on counter-attacks with the likes of Lithuanian attacker Sernas, I think there’s a real case for Widzew scoring at least one goal here against Maaskant’s occasionally convincing Wisla Krakow side. Wisla are without a doubt the superior of the two sides and really should win the game but you never know which Wisla will turn up so rather than go for the obvious home win, I’d prefer to sit back and take over 2.5 goals here as two attacking sides with everything to gain should produce a game with over 2.5 goals in today, in my view. The odds are quite generous for a reason, though, so do approach with caution!

Team news – Wisla Krakow miss Branco and Bosuski whereas Widzew Lodz miss Nakoulma and Ostrowski.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 23/20.

Targu Mures vs Otelul Galati – away win at evens.

I’ve got a certain paranoia about backing Otelul Galati now because I know at somepoint it’s going to come crashing down around the financially-troubled league leaders. However, I’m keeping the faith today because of their opponents, Targu Mures. Newly-promoted Targu Mures have managed to concede goals in seven out of their ten home games in the Liga this season and this one shouldn’t be any different with atrocious defending tending to be their favoured tactical approach. However, if they’re stupid enough to give Otelul Galati the lead here then they may as well way goodbye to three points because I cannot name a better side at holding a lead than Otelul Galati in the Liga this season. Otelul aren’t as strong on the road as they are at home, it’s true, and they don’t score enough goals as a rule. However, their side would happily die for one another such is their team spirit and if they have a lead then they’ll hold it and let’s face it – only Vaslui and Steaua Bucharest this season have conceded less goals than they have on the road so Otelul need to be taken seriously here.

I still think Otelul’s season will come crashing down at somepoint but again, I just don’t think it’ll be here. Their youthful and determined side should be able to penetrate defensively-inept Targu Mures and if they obtain that lead then they should hold it. For me, the away win is decently priced at evens although I’d leave it if it drops.

Verdict: Otelul Galati to win at evens.

Javor Ivanjica vs Vojvodina Novi Sad – away win at 27/20.

This is a bit of a speculative bet on the basis that Vojvodina haven’t looked particularly good since returning from the winter break but in typical Vojvodina style, they are still winning their games so I’ll give them a chance here. Similarly, Javor are not an easy side to beat at home as their record of zero defeats in eight Super Liga home games this season indicates all too well. However, this is their first home game since parting ways with number one goalkeeper Kahriman and defenders Dokic and Gogic, not to mention Malisic or important striker Odita. Javor are already lacking in front of goal but now Nigerian hitman Odita has moved on, it’s hard to consider them as a serious goal threat anymore. With three out of their four defenders having moved on, as well as their number one goalkeeper, it appears to me to be only a matter of time before someone does break their excellent home record and one side that is good enough to do that is Vojvodina, in my view. Either way, the odds on the away win at 27/20 appear too long with the above in mind so the away win is my call here.

Verdict: Vojvodina Novi Sad to win at 27/20.

Real Zaragoza vs Valencia CF – over 2.5 goals at evens.

This is more of a speculative bet so ignore it if you want to! My reasoning is purely that these two sides play the same type of attacking football. Zaragoza may welcome back Argentinian nutcase Ponzio for this encounter but both sides still enjoy playing an attractive attacking style of football and given that neither side excels in defence, I think we should see plenty of goals here. Valencia may well be tired from their trip to Germany a few days ago to face Schalke 04 in the UEFA Champions League whereas Real Zaragoza will be fresh and raring to go as they bid to push away from the relegation zone. Both sides need the points and both sides have some talented flair players ala Herrera and Mata so I think we’ll see over 2.5 goals in this game at decent odds.

Team news – Real Zaragoza miss Sinama-Pongolle, Lafita, and Boutahar.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Vaduz vs SC Kriens – home win with -1.5 handicap at 5/4.

Vaduz welcome Kriens to the Rheinpark in Lichenstein in the knowledge that promotion is getting nearer and nearer. Vaduz have gone from strength to strength as the season has gone on with seasoned pros like Jehle, Burgmeier, and Schwegler dragging this team along by the scruff of their neck. Barring their abject start to the Challenge League campaign due to a bout of sickness, Vaduz have been simply fantastic this season, scoring goals for fun and winning most of their games. Emerging Liechtenstinian striker Hasler has complemented Brazilian striker Sabia well, especially with Arlan Monteiro sat behind them and Swiss midfielder Ciccone has played his part too. All in all, this Vaduz side has too much quality in it to be a Challenge League side, in my view. They’ve won six consecutive home games in the Challenge League and on the back of a convcining 0-3 win at Yverdon Sport in their last game, you have to fancy them to do a lot of damage against Kriens today. Kriens have really struggled offensively this season and now that Argentinian striker Philippe has moved on, they look even weaker in attack, hence them failing to score in both games since returning from the winter break. The departure of sulky goalkeeper Djukic may improve the dressing room atmosphere of Kriens but it doesn’t improve their quality. Indeed, it lessens their quality, in my view, and given that defending is all that Kriens have left, I think they’re in for a long season now.

Kriens have found themselves on the receiving end of four defeats in eight away games, which is somewhat miraculous when you consider that they’ve scored an appalling six goals along the way whilst conceding nearly two goals per away game. However, I’ll apply the logic that I always apply in the Challenge League by observing which sides have beaten Kriens and wouldn’t you know it – the two sides that have beaten the -1.5 goal handicap against Kriens was Lugano and Servette respectively earlier this season. Since returning weaker from the winter break, they’ve also lost 2-0 to a weak Stade Nyonnais side, which should give you some idea of where Kriens are currently at. Therefore, I really don’t feel it’s a big ask for in-form and potent Vaduz to break the handicap here and the odds are good enough to take a chance on.

Team news – Vaduz miss Oehri, Sturm, and Ritzberger whilst having doubts over Arlan.

Verdict: Vaduz to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 5/4.
