Sint-Truiden vs Racing Genk

Free

Today’s featured game simply has to be the Eerste Klasse encounter between Sint-Truiden and Racing Genk. Newly-promoted Sint-Truiden are absolutely on fire at the moment with five wins from seven games and are currently unbeaten. They’ve already travelled to reigning champions Standard de Liege this season and claimed a draw as well as hosting runners-up Anderlecht and beating them! Sint-Truiden aren’t the best side in Belgium so let’s not get too carried away here. However, the fact remains that they’re ruthlessly efficient and it’s great to ride this particular wave whilst you can because whereas Sint-Truiden are doing very well, they’re not scoring many goals. When this occurs, the side in question will struggle when they hit bad form as they’ve not got the goals in them to bail them out. Still, they’re currently the lowest conceding side in the Eerste Klasse so hats off Sint-Truiden. Today they host a Racing Genk side that were difficult to play against last year, a credential they appear to have removed this year. Currently sat 12th in the table, Racing Genk have one just once in seven games, although interestingly enough that win came away from home rather than at home. Racing Genk are actually unbeaten away from home this season as both of their defeats were inflicted at their own ground. Racing Genk aren’t doing a lot to assist or defy their current league placing as they’re quite content not scoring or conceding many goals. Before the season started, I’d have tipped this game as an away win but having looked at the form of both sides and the obviously favourable momentum that Sint-Truiden currently boast, I can’t help but feel that 13/10 on a home win could be a real steal here.

Tuesday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sint-Truiden vs Racing Genk – home win at 13/10 – see introduction for full details.

Wiener Neustadt vs SV Mattersburg – home win at evens. This is a slightly dubious call due to Wiener Neustadt’s poor form of late but I’m going to call it nonetheless. Wiener Neustadt are a home side; there’s no two ways about it. They’re a prolific side at home with little care for defence, which I partially admire and partially fear when betting on them. In fact, they actually currently average scoring two goals per game when playing at home. Today they host an SV Mattersburg side very much in-form with three wins from three games. However, something doesn’t quite add up here. SV Mattersburg are one of the worst away sides in the Bundesliga and despite having won once away from home this season, they’ve already lost twice. To further my point – SV Mattersburg average conceding two goals per game on the road and have scored just one goal away from home, which was against a very much out-of-form SV Kapfenberg. There’s a very good reason that SV Mattersburg were nearly relegated last year and it’s because they’re not good enough to be in this division. Whereas I respect the momentum they currently have, I’m really favouring the home side with the above information in mind. As I mentioned earlier, caution is most certainly recommended but I think the home win at evens could be a good bet tonight.

First Vienna vs Austria Lustenau – away win at 5/4. With six wins in eight games (five consecutive wins now), you have to feel that backing Austria Lustenau is certainly worth your money. They currently lead the Liga 1 table by a good four points predominantly because they’re the only side in the division with a grain of consistency. Hosts First Vienna are the holders of possibly the more bizarre records in the league. For instance, they’re amongst the top goalscorers in the division but they’re 8th and have lost two out of two home games this season. Spotting anything bizarre so far?! First Vienna are very much an away side with their goalscoring record on the road dwarfing any other side’s thus far. However, at home, First Vienna just can’t seem to turn up as they’ve amassed just two goals in their two home games so far. For me, an unreliable First Vienna hosting a better and more consistent Austria Lustenau with a great deal of momentum only spells out an away win so 4/5 on this outcome looks a great bet to me!

Leeds United vs Liverpool – lay Liverpool at evens. This is obviously dubious but Leeds United have proven that they’re a force at home against anyone so I expect them to put on a good show here. They’ve won four from four games at home in League One, scoring eleven goals and conceding just two. As far as the League Cup itself goes, they’ve only played one game at Elland Road which was a 1-1 draw with Championship strugglers Watford, a game they dominated and justly won 2-1 in extra time. They’re currently unbeaten in all competitions and as we all know by now – they’re too good to be in League One. On the other side of the coin, Liverpool haven’t been exactly setting the Premier League alight. They’ve won some games, true enough, but they’re conceding far too easily and too many times they’ve had to be bailed out with great fortune. It’s beyond unlikely that Rafa Benitez is going to field his best players for this and Liverpool’s second string aren’t like Arsenal’s or Manchester United’s – they’re actually quite poor, which surprises me as Benitez is generally quite astute when it comes to promising youngsters. If Benitez plays the squad I think he will then there’s tremendous value in laying Liverpool at evens. If there’s no Torres, Benayoun or Gerrard then the Merseyside outfit are going to struggle. Who could blame the Spaniard for resting his star players, however? This is a meaningless competition and he has his eyes firmly fixed upon the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League. Although it’s something of a “public bet” by now, I still laying Liverpool at evens could have some value in it.

Carlisle United vs Portsmouth – away win a 5/6. I think the general concensus on this game is that a shock home win could be on the cards. I’m going to lean the other way with this one, however. Portsmouth have played very well in their last two games and have been beyond unfortuante to come away with nothing. Had it not been for the misfirings of striker Frederic Piquionne then I suspect Portsmouth would have got at least a draw from one of those games, if not more. Carlisle United have been playing some good football lately but they’ve also been unfortunate in some instances. Carlisle United actually possess one of the worst home records in League One having lost three of their four home games this season. All in all, we have two unfortunate and out-of-form sides clashing for a competition that neither side particularly cares to be in. Outcome? Portsmouth need momentum if nothing else so I can see them taking the game to Carlisle United tonight and winning by a narrow margin. Either way, odds of 5/6 on the away win could hold good value here.

Piacenza vs Salernitana – home win at 5/6. Ah, the lovely no-brainer of the day! Piacenza managed to win their first game of the season last match, giving the momentum entering this particular game. Happily for them, they’re facing a pointless Salernitana side that have now lost five games in a row. I can’t see anything other than a straightforward home win here and 5/6 is a good set of odds to see it happen at.

Gallipolli vs Ancona – away win at 9/5. This is a very dubious call as Ancona were the worst away side in Serie B last season but I’m liking their current vein of form. Three wins from five games says that Ancona are playing good football. Hell, they’ve already managed an away win this season – doesn’t that say it all?! My other point is that Gallipolli haven’t adjusted to life in Serie B too well yet and haven’t managed to win a game yet, although to their credit, they’ve only lost once. Their biggest problem at home is goalscoring. One goal in two home games simply isn’t good enough and they’ll need to be a lot better to take points off a good Ancona. For me, the away win at 9/5 looks a potentially very good bet.

NoSta Novotroitsk vs Sibir Novosibirsk – away win at evens. Despite a relatively poor away record, I’m climbing aboard the form wagon today to back my faithful Sibir Novosibirsk to win at relegation battlers NoSta Novotroitsk. The hosts are unbeaten in three games but they take on a very much in-form Sibir Novosibirsk side that have average three goals a game for their last three outings. NoSta Novotroitsk are amongst the top goalscorers at home in the whole division so I expect a lot of goals in this game. However, their tendency to concede and their less quality players make me think that the away win could boast some value at evens.

Volgar Gazprom Astrakhan vs Volga Nyzhnyi Novgorod – away win at 6/4. Again, I’m jumping on the form wagon with Volga Nyzhnyi Novgorod having won three of their last five games, drawing the other two. The visitors have interestingly lost less games this season than any other side and hosts Volgar Gazprom Astrakhan are unlikely to alter that, given that they’ve only won once in their last five games. They’re far from in bad form, currently, but they’re facing a Volga Nyzhnyi Novgorod side that are very much in form. In fact, they’ve amassed ten goals over their past four games and look to continue their impressive run against lesser opposition in what can now be legitimately called a promotion push. For me, 6/4 on the away win could have some real value as I thoroughly expect an open game which would surely see an away win as the outcome.
