Sivasspor vs Trabzonspor

Free

Today’s featured game is the first league game of Turkish Super Lig clubs Sivasspor and Trabzonspor. Last year’s runners-up Sivasspor have already featured in competitive games having lost to Anderlecht in the UEFA European Champions League Qualifiers over two legs. Trabzonspor are yet to play a competitive game. The hosts were dubbed a “one-off” a couple of seasons ago when they performed admirably. However, they cast all of their doubters aside by finishing runners-up last year to Besiktas JK. People are rapidly beginning to realise that Sivasspor won’t just go away or disappear; they’re here to stay. Unfortunately for Trabzonspor, they know this all too well having been on the receiving end of defeats at this ground for four seasons running now. In fact, Trabzonspor have only beaten Sivasspor once in their last eight attempts, and that was a home game in 2007. Aside from the above information, Sivasspor are a deadly home side and have been for years. Frankly, 6/4 on a home win here is very good odds and they’re certainly worth taking in my opinion!

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sivasspor vs Trabzonspor – home win at 6/4 – see introduction for full details.

Hoffenheim vs Bayern Munich – away win at 11/10. Bayern Munich have impressed me over the summer with their recognition of how far behind the major forces in European football they were actually falling. They’ve since bought eight new players and kept hold of vital asset Franck Ribery – at least for the time being. They’ve got a very good and experienced manager in Louis van Gaal, who won the Dutch Eredivisie last season with AZ Alkmaar. Hoffenheim were good at the start of last season but as their squad became stretched, their results became poor. In truth, they’re a decent side with a couple of good players, nothing more. In all honesty, I can’t see anything other than an away win here with the information above unless the new signings don’t gel as quickly as Bayern Munich would like. Either way, odds of 11/10 for the away win are worth taking.

Gratkorn vs SCR Altach – away win at 4/5. Last year’s relegated side SCR Altach are already favourites to return to the Bundesliga after four straight wins from four games. They’re blatantly too good for the division and I don’t think it’s just a phase either. Gratkorn are an average side at the best of times but they’re currently in poor times with no wins in four games and lurk just outside the relegation zone. With that in mind, an away win looks imminent here and it’s certainly worth taking at 4/5.

Sint-Truiden vs Charleroi – home win at 5/4. This is one of my more cunning bets today. Sint-Truiden surprised a lot of people by drawing 2-2 at reigning champions Standard de Liege, myself included, but it’s best not to get carried away. However, I am still calling a home win here today. Why? Well, the home side will be buoyant from such an excellent result and have proven they can score goals, which is half of the battle really. When you consider the above information as well as the fact that Charleroi had three men dismissed last game who will miss this game, you have to feel a home win looks a very real possibility. Charleroi are atypically a decent side but with an under-strength squad due to suspension and on the back of a demoralising defeat, I feel a home win at 5/4 could be a real bargain.

Excelsior Mouscron vs Roeselare – home win at 4/5. A win against Racing Genk has given Excelsior Mouscron the start to the season that they need to fight against the drop. Fortunately for them, their momentum from that game can be utilised today against lowly Roeselare, a side that I’ll be surprised to see still in this division next year. There’s not vast amounts between them but the hosts simply have more to their game. I think a home win here at 4/5 is something of a bargain.

Pribram vs Sparta Prague – home win with double chance at 5/6. This is a very interesting call. Pribram are a semi-decent Czech outfit that enjoy lingering around mid-table. However, they do tend to boast a very good home record and are generally pretty hard to overcome. Generally, I would say Sparta Prague would overcome that barrier and stats show that this does often occur. However, a rusty Sparta Prague side with no goals in two domestic games travel to Pribram having played in Greece three days ago and crashed out of the UEFA Champions League. This squad are tired and demoralised. Pribram are fresh, confident from their win last match against Kladno and ready to cause an upset. I think the bookies have misjudged the odds for this game but I’m happy to take 5/6 on a home win with double chance ’cause I can’t see Sparta Prague winning here today.

West Bromwich Albion vs Newcastle United – home win at 5/4. This is an absolute bargain call. I cannot for the life of me figure out why West Bromwich Albion are only at 5/4. They’ve kept virtually the same talented squad as last year only minus manager Tony Mowbray, who has been replaced by talented young manager Roberto Di Matteo. They’re raring to go and have the squad available to them to get them back in the Premier League next season. Newcastle United are currently an absolute catalogue of disasters. This team has brought in no new players over summer, has sold key players, has no manager yet, has no management hierachy, has uncertain players, has an unbalanced squad, has poor pre-season form and will frankly be relegated to the division below if they don’t sort themselves out fast. Their latest debacle is that Joe Kinnear has said he’s been given a two-year contract with Newcastle United, something that the club then denied. There is no doubt in my mind that the utter shambolic nature of this club currently can only see them lose this match and what fine odds to lose it at, eh?!

Grenoble vs Olympique de Marseille – away win with -1.75 handicap at 11/4. I’m not entirely sure why Olympique de Marseille are 11/4 to win this game with a -1.75 handicap but I’m prepared to go along with it! True, it is the first game of the season but they’ve improved their squad for this year and it still has the same relentless potency to it. Grenoble are a semi-decent side when they’re playing their best football but that’s not often and certainly not at the start of the season. The visitors are good proven goalscorers and I expect them to win this game comfortably. Even if you don’t like the handicap, the away win is 11/10 alone so take these odds whilst you can!

Le Mans vs Olympique Lyonnais – away win at 11/10. Olympique Lyonnais impressed me massively over the summer by spending big to replace Karim Benzema and I think they’ll win the league because of it. Le Mans aren’t the best of sides and should provide little to no resistance here. My only concern is that Olympique Lyonnais’ players may have not yet gelled together hence me not backing a handicap here. However, an away win really should be on the cards and 11/10 is a price worth taking.

Vasas Budapest vs Paksi SE – away win at 6/5. Vasas Budapest are soon enough going to become the rubbing rags of this division because they have massive issues financially, which obviously affects the whole club. The only reason I tell you this is because the good odds like 6/5 today won’t last long; the bookies will soon cotton on and give you shit odds. Paksi SE are a competent side that are more than capable of dealing a hammer-blow to a Vasas Budapest outfit that are in real turmoil.

Papa vs Fehervar – away win at evens. Nice and easy – Fehervar are too good for newly-promoted Papa. The hosts had a rough introduction to the Soproni Liga when Debrecen showed them how things work around there. Today, I anticipate a similar lesson from in-form Fehervar. The visitors don’t possess the same quality as Debrecen but they do possess a good deal more quality than Papa. An away win at evens should not be overlooked here.

Kecskemeti TE vs Gyori ETO  – away win at 11/8. This is a slightly more dubious call but not excessively so. Gyori ETO are a good side and have shown that via the last few seasons. They’ve got off to a good start this year with a respectable draw at Ujpest and a win against Vasas Budapest. I anticpate they’ll get another three points today as they travel to Kecskemeti TE, who still have yet to accrew a single point this season. They’re not in the same league as Gyori ETO in a talented-sense so an away win here looks relatively imminent.

AFC Ajax Amsterdam vs RKC Waalwijk – home win with -2.75 handicap at 5/4. AFC Ajax Amsterdam are on the verge of exploding and dominating the Eredivisie this year. They’ve got the squad, the manager, and their rivals are all falling behind. They’ve shown they mean business with an impressive win at Groningen on the opening day of the season and now will seek to continue that by laying waste to newly-promoted RKC Waalwijk, who surely will not be able to resist their scintillating football, particularly after an opening day defeat to FC Utrecht?!

Spartak Nalchik vs Spartak Moscow  – away win at 5/6. Spartak Moscow are beginning to look ominously like a side that knows they’re going to win the Russian Premier League. They’re not top of the league but the confident swagger and style they’re playing with at the moment can only be admired, respected and feared by other clubs. They’ve got the strength in depth and ability to tear this league apart, let alone lowly Spartak Nalchik. I’ll be honest with you; I thought I was seeing things when I saw the odds were 5/6. The best I could have hoped they would be was 4/6 in my head but the bookies have happily given us pretty good odds on something that’s as close to a dead certain you’ll get today at good value odds!

Artmedia Petrzalka vs FC Nitra – away win at 9/4. Artmedia Petrzalka suffered over the summer in terms of losing players and their form has shown this in their campaign thus far. Unfortunately for them, they’re hosting the form side in Slovakia at the moment – FC Nitra. The visitors are currently top of the table with three wins and one draw from their first four games. Whereas I don’t think they’ll still be there at the end of the season, I do think they’ll beat Artmedia Petrzalka today quite comfortably. I was surprised to see odds of 9/4 on the away win here but all I can assume is that the bookies still think that Artmedia Petrzalka still has a title-challenging squad, as I did until a few weeks ago. I’d be surprised if this is anything but an away win, really!
