Slovacko vs Viktoria Plzen

Today’s secondary featured game is the Gambrinus Liga encounter between relegation-threatened Slovacko and league leaders Viktoria Plzen. Slovacko suffered an embarrasing 1-3 defeat against Bohemians 1905 last match whereas Viktoria Plzen took their time in beating Hradec Kralove but ultimately won the game 2-1.

Therefore, I think it’s fair to observe that neither side is flying high at the moment. Slovacko have been bereft of quality since buying their promotion a couple of seasons ago but their drive and momentum is what has kept them going. However, the winter break interrupted that and look what happened on their return – they conceded three times at home against a side that nearly quadrupled their goalscoring tally for the season away from home solely because of that game. Slovacko will attack and attack and usually score a goal but with such catastrophic defending, they’re very unlikely to get results in games like this although they’re not a side to be taken too lightly!

However, visitors Viktoria Plzen aren’t in the best of ways either. Bookies keep over-pricing them because of their form earlier in the season but losing sight of the fact that they’ve lost defenders Navratil and Rada over the winter break would be foolhardy as Plzen work as a unit and their unit is considerably weaker without those players, as the fact that they conceded against lowly Hradec Kralove at home last match indicated all too well. Plzen’s away record this season is excellent and they deserve recognition for it. However, I’d be lying if I said that I thought they could maintain it because I just don’t see how they will without their important defenders. They signed Neuwirth from Banik Ostrava to help fill the void and he should do that in time but even so, that’s very unlikely to happen this season so I don’t see Plzen recapturing their early season form again for the remainder of this campaign – well, not on a consistent basis, anyway. Incidentally, Plzen also signed Hajovsky from Hradec Kralove in defence but I don’t think he’s a long-term solution!

All in all, we have the potential for goals here. Slovacko only know how to attack as their defending is mediocre at best and they need a positive result after last match. Plzen were unconvincing against Hradec Kralove and looked rusty and they need to get a positive result here as Sparta Prague look particularly menacing at the moment, especially now that their focus is solely on domestic competition again. For me, this game has over 2.5 goals written all over it, especially with Plzen’s defensive weakness, so that’s my call here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 5/6.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Gimnasia De La Plata vs Estudiantes De La Plata – over 2.5 goals at 6/4.

De La Plata derbies are usually a “no go” for 1×2 betting and this one is no excception. Both clubs have managers that haven’t been at the club for very long and both sides are still adjusting with that in mind. After Sabella’s bizarre and untimely departure for Estudiantes, tonight’s visitors lost their way with poor defending and unconvincing displays. Their form hasn’t been helped by the fact that they have no home advantage anymore as their own ground is undergoing renovations so they’re ground-sharing with Quilmes for this campaign. Therefore, Estudiantes are struggling to settle and I don’t see that changing by the time they face Gimnasia tonight. However, Gimnasia have changed too by becoming a lot more offensive and I don’t honestly know whether it’s done them good or not. Cappa has made them play some baffling games which have involved them losing 1-3 at home to a terrible Olimpo side and yet guided them to a 1-3 win at a superior Colon de Santa Fe side so what to expect here is anyone’s guess. One thing that can be assumed is that there will be goals as neither side have settled down and Gimnasia need as many points as possible to stave off the threat of relegation. It’s worth looking at Scheletto to score anytime if you can find the odds as he’d love to bag against his home club’s bitter rivals but over 2.5 goals remains my call here as the odds seem a tad high at 6/4.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 6/4.

Wacker Innsbruck vs Austria Vienna – away win at 11/10.

Wacker Innsbruck have stumbled along lately with hard-fought draws and narrow wins but it baffles me that they can still keep getting results as they’re frankly not a particularly good side. I wouldn’t bet against them with anyone but an in-form side based on what I’ve seen lately, especially considering how new Basque playmaker Carlos Merino has settled in at the club! However, Austria Vienna are absolutely the form side in the Bundesliga at the moment, despite a 2-2 draw at home to a fairly under-strength Sturm Graz. They’re back to scoring goals, which is essential as that was all they lacked earlier this season. They’ve got the creativity and the experience to make it count and whilst they’re scoring goals, I think backing them to beat a solid but low-scoring Wacker Innsbruck side at 11/10 has some value today.

Team news – Austria Vienna miss Almer and Hlinka.

Verdict: Austria Vienna to win at 11/10.

Sturm Graz vs LASK Linz – home win with -1.5 handicap at 4/5.

Graz managed to get a very respectable 2-2 draw at Austria Vienna last match despite missing their best striker so it’s fair to observe that they’re playing well. They’ve had a decent season; nothing out of the ordinary, but they remain one of Austria’s top clubs and their home form tends to show that. Helpfully, they’re facing a side who should ease their passage back into form today – LASK Linz. I mentioned at the start of the season that LASK had problems with no depth, especially in attack, and that has proven to be very true indeed. LASK have played four games since returning from the winter break and have lost all of them, scoring in just one of those games. They’ve been beaten by the -1.5 goal handicap twice and three of those four defeats have been at home so it’s fair to say that LASK are almost a Liga 1 side now. They lack a threat in front of goal and are very vulnerable in defence so if this is anything but a straightforward win for Sturm Graz then there’s something wrong here, especially with all of Sturm Graz’s last four home wins in the Bundesliga against LASK Linz beating the -1.5 handicap.

Verdict: Sturm Graz to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 4/5.

Cercle Brugge vs Westerlo – home win at evens.

Cercle have already won seven out of thirteen home games in the Eerste Klasse thus far and to have any hope of making the Champions Play-Off then they have to win today as only a few games remain. Westerlo have no real point to their season as they’re not going to obtain enough points to make the Champions Play-Off and they’re well clear of the relegation play-off so don’t be surprised if their interest in games like this drop. Cercle played really win during their 0-3 victory at Sint-Truiden lately and should bring that momentum into this game today. With Westerlo lacking a reason to win this game and missing a couple of important players (i.e. Corstjens in defence), I think taking Cercle to win this game at evens represents good value today, especially with Westerlo conceding goals for fun away from home this season.

Team news – Westerlo miss Corstjens, Liliu, Ruiz, and Vanaudenaerde.

Verdict: Cercle Brugge to win at evens.

Universidad de Chile vs Union San Felipe – home win with -1.5 handicap at 6/5.

I hope we won’t see any repeat of Universidad’s ridiculous display against Santiago Morning of late but to be honest, following a rampant 1-5 victory at Universidad de Concepcion last match, I think they’re back in business. They look the strongest of the “big three” in Chilean football at the start of this campaign and it’s been helped by a somewhat sore absence of Copa Libertadores football. “U” are keen to get back into the competition, hence their convincing displays, and they should produce another one tonight. History favours them here; they’ve beaten Union San Felipe by two goals or more for five consecutive home meetings. San Felipe can be a tough nut to crack but there’s little potency there after most of their star players left over the break so backing “U” to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 6/5 appeals to me here – they should simply be too good.

Verdict: Universidad de Chile to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 6/5.

Zadar vs Hajduk Split – under 2.5 goals at 5/6.

Laying Hajduk Split at evens appeals to me here but I’m conscious of the fact that they are still better than Zadar so I’m going to side with under 2.5 goals instead.

I mentioned last week about Hajduk’s disruptions over summer and what impact it’s hard on them and that was very apparent during their 0-0 draw at home last match. I sense a similar game may be in line for today as Zadar may be an inferior side but they’re strong at home when it comes to avoiding defeat and they’ll certainly smell blood ahead of this game. Hajduk Split miss the creative Sharbini in midfield through suspenson, which is a massive blow for them, and further backs up my under 2.5 goals goal here as I don’t see Hajduk scoring enough to jeopardise the call today.

Team news – Hadjuk Split miss Anas Sharbini.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 5/6.

Arsenal vs Sunderland – both sides to score at 10/11.

Arsenal have no depth – we all know that. This is the time of season that it usually shows each year and their massive injury list – that includes Fabregas and Van Persie – is surely going to start affecting them now. This is their third game in eight days and one of those games was a particularly demoralising defeat against Birmingham City in the League Cup Final in bizarre circumstances with one of Arsenal’s better performers on the day – Koscielny – gifting Obafemi Martins a goal. Arsenal have since responded with a 5-0 victory against Leyton Orient in the FA Cup but these games are taking their toll on Wenger’s young squad and it should show here, especially with the possibility of Wenger casting an eye ahead to next week’s daunting trip to Nou Camp where Arsenal will be looking to defend their slender lead. Sunderland aren’t a great away side and they have important absences themselves but with players like Gyan, Henderson, and Malbranque in attack, I think there’s more than enough for Sunderland to score here against a leaky Arsenal defence, especially Koscielny a doubt for this game. Therefore, my call is for both sides to score here.

Team news – Arsenal miss Fabregas, Fabianski, Frimpong, Song, Van Persie, Vermaelen, and Walcott whilst having doubts over Koscielny whereas Sunderland miss Campbell, Gordon, Meyler, Turner, Cattermole, Welbeck, and Zenden whilst having doubts over Onuoha.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 10/11.

Hannover 96 vs Bayern Munich – lay Bayern Munich at 5/4.

How the hell are Bayern Munich 4/6 to win this game? Seriously? They’ve already admitted that they have no chance of winning the Bundesliga following their 1-3 humbling against Dortmund, so that’s off the menu. They’re out of the cup, courtesy of Schalke 04, and now this is their third game in seven days. Are they ready for it? Not in my eyes. Hannover 96 has become a vey difficult side to face this season and I think they’re going to find it very hard to overcome their battling hosts here, especially with box-to-box midfielder Schweinsteiger absent for this game, which is a massive blow. Hannover 96 miss Ya Konan in attack, which is what swayed me from taking Hannover 96 to win this game with draw no bet cover as he’s been instrumental for them in attack this season. However, they’re a very solid unit and are lethal on the counter-attacks so Bayern’s leaky and susceptible defence could and should suffer here.

I live in permanent fear of betting against Bayern Munich in case Robben and Ribery turn it on and simply produce four goals from thin air but that’s always the danger with going against big clubs. However, no Schweinsteiger and a demoralised side makes me think that a battling Hannover 96 side may cause problems here and for me, laying Bayern at 5/4 looks a good value bere here, although caution is recommended for obvious reasons.

Team news – Hannover 96 miss Andreasen, Miller, Avevnor, Burmeister, Hofmann, Ernst, Evseev, and Ya Konan whereas Bayern Munich miss Olic, Schweinsteiger, and Sattelmaier.

Verdict: Lay Bayern Munich at 5/4.

Gamba Osaka vs Cerezo Osaka – home win at 10/11.

Gamba Osaka parted ways with strker Lucas and signed Adriano from their opponents today to replace him. The departed Yasuda in defence will be considerably harder to replace but with little attaking threat from Cerezo today, I don’t envision it being much of an issue here. They destroyed Melboure Victory 5-1 in the Asian Champions League mid-week and showed no signs of being rusty so we should see a confident Gamba Osaka display today.

Visitors Cerezo Osaka have now lost Kagawa, Ienaga, and Adriano in less than eight months and I just don’t think they can deal with it. Their potency has suffered massively and although they’re still a well-oiled unit, they’re not a goalscoring machine now and they should struggle against their more illustrious neighbours. Cerezo were highly disappointing against Arema Malang of Indonesia in the Asian Champions League earlier this week despite winning 2-1 and I think against a better class of opponent today that they’ll struggle a lot.

For me, the home win at 10/11 has value here although approach with caution as it’s a derby.

Verdict: Gamba Osaka to win at 10/11.

Vitesse Arnhem vs VVV Venlo – home win with -1.5 handicap at 8/5.

Vitesse Arnhem welcome back Matic and Aissati for this game which massively boosts their attacking options ahead of this pivotal game. Although they’ve not demonstrated it consistently of late, Vitesse do have a superior side to the sides around them and I’m hoping that it shows here as this handicap price is very generous indeed. VVV are arguably the worst side in the Eredivisie and have lost all of their away games in 2011 by two goals or more (barring the trip to Ajax, which should have been by two or more!) so I don’t fancy their chances here. All that concerns me for this game is that Vitesse haven’t been the most cohesive of sides lately and that they’re missing some strikers but quality-wise, they’re head and shoulders above VVV. With that in mind, I can’t help but take a nibble on Vitesse -1.5 here, risky though it is, as the handicap price is simply too generous in my eyes.

Team news – Vitesse Arnhem miss Wilfried, Kaloglu, Snijders, and Caldirola.

Verdict: Vitesse Arnhem to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 8/5.

Arka Gdynia vs Lech Poznan – away win at 5/4.

Quality-wise, there’s light years of difference between these two sides. In Gdynia, that counts for very little as Arka are a very physically strong and well-organised side. However, Wisla Krakow took three points from Arka last match despite Arka playing well because Wisla took their chances, something which Arka are guilty of not doing far too often. In addition to that, Arka had big problems with absent first-team players, something which is evident yet again today against Lech Poznan and although I’m confident that Arka will make them work hard, I simply fail to see Arka’s goal threat here.

Lech are not without problems themselves, however. Attacker Stilic reportedly has issues with Bakero and will apparently not feature today, along with other first-team players. However, the difference here is that Lech do have the likes of Rudnevs and Krivets to call upon for creativity and match-winning moments and that’s what has convinced me to take Lech here. Lech can focus on their domestic campaign now that Sporting Braga of Portugal ended their European dream and Lech have come back down to earth in style, bouncing back from a 0-1 home defeat against Polonia Warsaw in the Puchar Polski to win the second leg 0-2 to progress. Lech bring momentum into this game as a result and although they’re not firing on all cylinders yet, they should have enough to edge this one today and the odds are good enough to take a chance on.

Team news – Arka Gdynia miss Plotka, Budzinski, Robakowski, Ivanovski, Glavina, and Siebert whereas Lech Poznan miss Drygas, Wojtkowiak, Djurdjevic, and Bandrowski.

Verdict: Lech Poznan to win at 5/4.

Real Mallorca vs Valencia CF – away win with draw no bet at 5/6.

I wish I could substantiate this more but I simply rate Valencia as a better side than Mallorca. Mallorca surprised – and irritated – most of the betting world by winning at Espanyol last match but is it anything more than a one-off? Not for me. Mallorca have consistently disappointed far too often this season and it’s that side of their ways that convinces me of the outcome today rather than their one-off displays. Mallorca can be strong at home but with little goalscoring threat and a lack of composure at the back this season, I don’t rate their chances here. I’m not an advocate of Valencia CF as I feel that they’re often overrated by their name but their midfield is excellent and they demonstrated that during a very impressive 1-2 win at San Mames against Athletic Club de Bilbao in their last away game so they are capable of facing the tough venues and emerging triumphant. Valencia should have enough firepower to at least draw this game but considering that Mallorca tend to concede a lot or not at all, I think that taking Valencia to win this game with draw no bet at 5/6 looks a good idea today.

Team news – Real Mallorca have doubts over De Guzman.

Verdict: Valencia CF to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Atletico Madrid vs Villarreal CF – over 2.5 goals at evens.

Although Atletico Madrid haven’t convinced me at all this season, there are just some games that produce a lot of goals no matter when they’re played and this fixture tends to be one of them. This exact fixture has produced a minimum of three goals for the last four times that it’s been played and I think we’ll see something similar tonight. Atletico Madrid can’t defend but their attack is dangerous and that should be easy to see against a Villarreal side that has frankly lost its way. I don’t know what El Submarino Amarillo are playing at but they’re conceding stupid goals and aren’t scoring enough. However, this samba game with Atletico Madrid should really awaken their attacking instincts and with both sides generally playing attacking football at all times, I think over 2.5 goals is far too generously priced at evens tonight.

Team news – Atletico Madrid miss Diego Costa and have doubts over Aguero.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Granada vs Salamanca – home win with -1.5 handicap at 9/5.

I don’t like handicapping against Salamanca because they’re a funny side – they can either keep a clean sheet or fail to score against any side in the Segunda Liga – it just depends which Salamanca side turns up. However, Granada have been immense lately, even when playing with ten men, so they have to be given serious consideration here. Geijo has time and time again proven that he is too good to be playing at this level and he’s pushing Granda towards an unprecedented promotion place due to his lethal finishing and off-the-ball movement. Granada have now won ten out of thirteen Segunda Liga home games this season and average scoring nearly three goals per home game, which is by far the best record in the division. They’ve beaten the -1.5 goal handicap for three consecutive home games despite facing mighty Real Betis Balompie along the way so I find it hard to doubt their credentials today. Salamanca can be a really tough opponent due to their solid defence but they’ve nose-dived lately with eight defeats, one draw, and just one win since the turn of the year. They won 1-0 against Villarreal II last match to stop the rot but it’s going to take more than that to convince me that Salamanca can ruffle Granada feathers here. For me, Granada should win this game fairly easily but with the handicap priced so generously in this game, I have to call Granada to beat the -1.5 goal handicap here today, although caution is recommended for reasons mentioned above!

Verdict: Granada to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 9/5.
