Today’s secondary featured game is the Brazilian Serie A game between giants Santos and newly-promoted Ponte Preta.
Despite the continued absence of Ganso and Neymar from the Santos ranks, I still rate them surprisingly highly. A lot has been made of the fact that they’ve not scored a goal for four consecutive games. I can understand that, to be honest – it’s a daunting statistic for any side to need to overcome, especially when it’s a side like Santos, who are usually notorious for the number of goals that they score. However, let’s be fair to Santos here – three out of their last four Serie A games have been away from home against good sides and they’ve been a bit unlucky not to score in those games, especially in their game against Internacional. Santos haven’t been lazy of late, though – they’ve brought in seasoned strikers Bill and Miralles respectively, neither of which are spectacular but both are capable and experienced at this level. They’ll allow Santos to play a more recognisable formation with their two starlets away and with the powerful runs of Felipe Anderson to inspire them, I do feel that this Santos side has goals in them; they just need a bit of luck!
Ponte Preta, on the other hand, are playing to their maximum just to stay in the division. I can’t fault their efforts and they do have a few good players in their ranks, most notably Ricardinho. However, this is very much a Serie B side and I fear for them when their energy runs out because they don’t have the quality en mass to keep them in Serie A. This side’s main strength is that they won’t stop working, though – that works well against a lot of Serie A sides as there are a number of what I would call “lazy” sides such as Flamengo or Sao Paulo. Ponte Preta do pose a threat on the counter-attack too. However, for the style that they play, they’re facing the masters of it today – Santos. Admittedly, it’s an under-strength Santos side but Ponte Preta will need a lot of luck to avoid defeat today, in my view.
As long as Santos aren’t too down due to their lack of goalscoring of late then they should win this one. They need to take their chances but they will create them as Ponte Preta rarely keep clean sheets on the road. For me, there’s value on the home win today.
