Today’s secondary featured game is the A Lyga heavyweight clash between Suduva Marijampole and Ekranas Panevezys.
Although Suduva do possess a better attack than Ekranas nowadays, they’ve yet to master the art that only Ekranas perfect within the confinements of Lithuania; efficiency. Ekranas aren’t as entertaining as Suduva but they do win more games because they’re more experienced and better-organised than Suduva are. Don’t get me wrong here – Suduva are a good side themselves. However, they’ve still got things to learn if they’re to challenge Ekranas for the A Lyga crown and unfortunately for the hosts, this game couldn’t have come at a worse time with that in mind.
As per usual, both sides have European committments at this time of year. However, Ekranas have got a good couple of weeks before their game in Ireland whereas Suduva entertain Daugava Daugavpils of Latvia in the coming days so they’re going to have to be careful not to over-exert themselves here. They may even rest players but I doubt it as this is a big game fo both sides and they both want to win it.
Despite the offensive power in both sides, however, I’m going to have to opt for under 2.5 goals here. Suduva struggle against well-organised defences and Ekranas approach away games with “defence first” tactics, which they’re pretty damn good at. Rafael Ledesma and Povilas Luksys are dangerous strikers, particularly the former, but they need the chances to score goals against Ekranas and that’s where Suduva should struggle, despite the growing ability of Eliosius. Ekranas don’t possess the youth or the pace that Suduva do but they’re very good at frustrating sides. Would they take a draw from a trip to Marijampole? Absolutely; few sides wouldn’t, if offered the opportunity.
Until last season, games between these two sides had gone under 2.5 goals on five consecutive occasions, which has already happened one more time this season so you can see the usual trend of these derbies. As long as Ekranas don’t turn it on or try playing an open game, they should have more than enough composure and experience to ride this one out to whatever end. For me, there’s value in taking under 2.5 goals at 11/10 as long as Ledesma and co. remain shackled by the Ekranas defence.
