Today’s free tip is in the Faroese encounter between TB/FCS/Royn and Skala.

Although almost certainly not going to be a classic, I really do think there’s value to be found in taking under 2.5 goals in this fixture. It’s hard to call low-scoring affairs in the Faroe Islands for a number of reasons. For example, the constant swirling winds make it impossible to control games of football sometimes – at least for one half – and the relative amateur state tends to ensure that most games have goals too. However, if there’s going to be a low-scoring game in the Meistaradeildin, then it’s this one.

TB/FCS/Royn, formerly just TB Tvoroyri, set their stall out a couple of years ago as a very defensive and hard-working unit. Unlike most teams at this level, they lack a proper goal-scorer. That’s why they try to play to their strengths, which is their ability to frustrate teams. For a young team, they’re remarkably disciplined and consistent, and it’s been that way for some time now. Unless a team drags them into a high-scoring game, kicking and screaming, then it’s just not going to happen. NSI Runavik managed it in the Logmanssteypid last week, but most teams are simply incapable of doing so. It’s still very early in the Meistaradeildin campaign for me to say for sure, but I would tentatively suggest that KI Klaksvik and Vikingur Gotu as the teams that could potentially unlock this solid door. For everybody else, it should be all about circumstances.

I can understand why the odds are rising on the home win here. I do think that TB/FCS/Royn will win the game, but at odds of 9/10 having been dragged through extra-time just a few days ago, it’s simply not worth the risk. I do rate the home team as the better side, particularly in Trongisvagur, but this situation does not suit their style of play. My opinion is that they prefer to face teams that will attack them, because it affords the likes of Ingason space on the break to damage teams. Once they have a lead, they sit on it very effectively, but taking that lead is somewhat problematic for today’s hosts. They generally don’t commit enough men forward to break teams down with any regularity, and with Skala having started their campaign brightly, I’m finding it hard to trust the home team to win this game, even though they really should.

In terms of personnel, Skala are one of the weakest sides in the division. However, upon their return to the Meistaradeildin, they’ve done remarkably well, seemingly modelling themselves upon today’s hosts. They’ve only conceded more goal in three Meistaradeildin outings this season, and in all seriousness, I don’t see how they could have had harder fixtures. Frustrating a relatively predictable HB Torshavn at home isn’t going to cause shockwaves across the Faroe Islands, but drawing 0-0 at reigning champions, KI Klaksvik, who are known for their goal-scoring ability, is a very impressive result indeed. Furthermore, to only lose by a single goal at Vikingur Gotu (which was courtesy of a strike from veteran Anghel) was a decidedly respectable scoreline.

Now, I don’t think for one moment that this little run of Skala’s will last forever. At the end of the day, they’re simply not as good as the majority of teams competing at this level. However, for the present time, Poulsen’s side are worthy of respect because they’re playing with organisation, consistency, hunger, and freshness. They’ve got a good mix of youngsters and experienced heads in their squad, and they have recorded some positive results ahead of this tricky trip, so I don’t see them being fazed here. Indeed, their hosts are a team that they could potentially beat – if they’re lucky – because of the similar styles. For that, though, Skala need to score, and they’re finding it tough to do that at the moment, which should not come as a surprise when you consider that they’re essentially a poor man’s TB/FCS/Royn.

However, what they are good at is keeping teams out, just like their hosts. With tired legs a-plenty in the TB/FCS/Royn camp, and a confident Skala before them, I’m expecting this to be a real dogfight of a match with little quality but plenty of heart. In my opinion, this really should be a low-scoring game, hence my interest in taking under 2.5 goals at generous odds of 63/50.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 63/50.
