Featured game

Today’s featured game is the Segunda Liga match in Spain between Alcorcon and Las Palmas.

An impressive run of form since the winter break has seen Alcorcon surge away from the relegation zone in impressive fashion, putting themselves closer to the promotion play-offs rather than the drop zone, bizarrely. Alcorcon have yet to master the ability to win away from home but when it comes to winning at home, only three out of the current top four in the division have won more than they have. Alcorcon have actually won eight out of twelve home games in the Segunda Liga this season, which is mightily impressive, especially as they’ve only just been promoted to the division. They’ve not just played shit sides either – they’ve beaten Real Valladolid, Recreativo de Huelva, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, and even Deportivo Xerez at home already this season so don’t underestimate the hosts here. With four wins from their last five games, momentum is definitely on Alcorcon’s side, especially after their win at fellow newly-promoted side Ponferradina last match so I fancy their chances here, even without important midfielder Sanz.

My confidence does largely stem from Las Palmas’ lengthy absentee list, however. As if it wasn’t bad enough for the visitors that they have to travel further than most other clubs in Spain for away games already but now they have to do it without a lot of first-team players. Las Palmas miss important defenders Ruyman and Aythami for this game, not to mention experienced midfielders Josico and David Gonzalez. Las Palmas also miss Vicente Gomez from midfield and regular striker Viera, not to mention back-up ex-Villarreal CF striker Guayre, so Las Palmas really are short on numbers today. Las Palmas have an uncanny ability to draw games sometimes and that’s the kind of weird run that they’re on but that tends to happen when they’re playing sides that don’t score goals. Happily, Alcorcon love to score goals; it’s their main strength, in fact, so I envision a long afternoon for Las Palmas looming ahead here.

Las Palmas may have only lost half of their away games in the Segunda Liga this season but no other side has conceded as many as they have away from home with a poor record of over two goals conceded per away game and with two important defenders and half their starting eleven out, I don’t think that’ll improve today. If Alcorcon continue with their momentum and ruthless goalscoring then I really fancy them to do damage today.

For me, there’s value in the home win at evens although I’d leave it if it hits 4/6.

Team news – Alcorcon miss Ruben Sanz whereas Las Palmas miss Aythami, Ruyman, Josico, Vicente Gomez, David Gonzalez, Guayre, and Viera.

Verdict: Alcorcon to win at evens.
