Featured game

De Graafschap vs Heracles Almelo – away win at evens.

Today’s featured game is between relegation battlers De Graafschap and underrated Heracles Almelo.

Despite occasionally impressing performance-wise in recent games, De Graafschap have actually lost four out of their last five Eredivisie games. In fact, they’ve lost eight out of their last ten games and times are naturally tough for the hosts. They’re struggling to stay in the division and fans can barely bring themselves to support their team for playing such horrible defensive football. De Graafschap defend badly but attack quite well so their manager decides to play defensive football – makes sense to me(!). Either way, the hosts ship far too many goals at home and that’s not a good thing when entertaining Heracles.

Although often a side that struggles on natural turf, I have to favour the visitors Heracles today. They play far better football than De Graafschap, irrespective of where they’re playing and who they’re facing. Heracles have some very talented attacking players and thus they play to their strengths. Despite the absence of important midfielder Overtoom today, I still think that Heracles have more than enough quality in their ranks to score goals here. True enough, Heracles are also more than capable of conceding goals here as they’s something that they do too easily. However, they’re a goalscoring side by nature and to beat them you have to outscore them, which is something that looks beyond De Graafschap here.

In my eyes, this game will go one of two ways. Either De Graafschap will attack – as they need to – and score against Heracles but will ultimately be outscored or they’ll sit back and defend – as they usually do – and will end up losing this game too easily. Either way, the away win at evens is something that really interests me today.

Verdict: Heracles Almelo to win at evens.

Additional games

Marila Pribram vs Ceske Budejovice – under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Under 2.5 goals is 11/10 here between two average sides? Why?! It looks glorious value to me, to be honest.

Yes, Pribram’s games of late have gone over 2.5 goals but don’t you see the trait between all the sides that they’re faced in their last five games? They’ve encountered teams that will attack them, which allows Pribram to unleash their most deadly weapon – the counter-attack. They’ve done bloody well too, to their credit, beating some big names along the way and holding their own rather well. Go back a few games prior to that run, though, and you’ll see what happens when Pribram host a side that won’t attack. Yes, that’s right – a lot of 0-0’s appear! Pribram are missing half of their midfield and defence today too, which doesn’t aid their plight, especially with attacker Pilik out. Pribram may edge this one but I certainly wouldn’t put money on it.

Ceske Budejovice will only ruin this bet if they go to Pribram with the intention of attacking, which they categorically will not do. Ceske Budejovice will park the bus away from home, as they always do. They’re decent at it due to experience and physical strength and I expect to see more of that today. Ceske’s defence has been immense since they signed Tomas Repka from Sparta Prague and I expect him to be in top form again today. Key attacking midfielder Otepka is missing for this game, which pretty much reduces the chances of Ceske winning here to about 2% by my reckoning. Still, they’ve got the defence and the momentum on the back of three straight wins to get something from the game and for what it’s worth, I think that they will.

However, let’s forget the 1×2 market as I see no value there. Instead, I’m opting for under 2.5 goals between an over-achieving home side that is missing some key players and can’t break sides down against a defence-minded visiting side that haven’t conceded a goal in their last three games.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Aston Villa vs Sunderland – away win with draw no bet at 7/5.

This is a dicey one because Sunderland are notoriously ineffectual when it comes to playing away from home. However, I fancy them to do well here because of O’Neill. He left Aston Villa a while back with some bad blood and this is the opportune moment for revenge. O’Neill knows that Villa side inside out and that gives Sunderland a real advantage here. The visitors need to take their chances for this bet to win but if Sunderland get the lead then they should be able to hold it against a Villa side composed predominantly of kids due to injuries to key players. Therefore, my call is the away win with draw no bet cover at 7/5.

Verdict: Sunderland to win with draw no bet at 7/5.

Flora Tallinn vs Trans Narva – home win with -1.5 handicap at 4/5.

Although it’s not been the case for the past few years, there’s a massive gulf in ability between these two clubs nowadays and it’s showing. Flora Tallinn haven’t been at their best in the opening few weeks of the Meistriliiga season as they try to bed in their new youngsters but they’re still the second best side in Estonia and it will show when it’s allowed to. Flora Tallinn are a nightmare to face at home and almost always score goals and I don’t see how a demoralised and frankly lost Trans Narva side will prevent that from happening. Trans Narva used to be able to give Flora Tallinn a good game of football but they look so bereft of confidence and ideas right now that it’s hard to see them even scoring here. With that in mind, the home win with a -1.5 handicap appeals to me at 4/5.

Verdict: Flora Tallinn to beat the -1.5 handicap at 4/5.

Kruoja Pakruojis vs Suduva MarijampoleSuduva Marijampole HT/FT at 4/5.

Firstly, there’s no home advantage for Kruoja as this game is being played in Panevezys. Therefore, it’s a neutral venue so Suduva have an even better chance of recording a good result here today. Secondly, Kruoja rode their luck last match to beat lowly Vilnius 2-1 in a droll game with few chances. Kruoja are very defensive and I expect to see them take that approach today against Lithuania’s most flambuoyant side – Suduva. The visitors took a long, long time to get going against Atalntas earlier this week but used very little energy in doing so as a result. Suduva have got the attacking quality to break through a stubborn Kruoja defence and given that Suduva have been leading at half-time in their two eventual away wins already this season, I fancy the visitors with a HT/FT bet at 4/5, especially as it’s a neutral venue!

Verdict: Suduva Marijampole HT/FT at 4/5.

RKC Waalwijk vs FC Utrecht – home win at 4/5.

Utrecht will show up from time to time – whenever it suits them, really. To say that they’re a good side nowadays would be a complete lie, however. They’ve been woeful lately – read into their results what you wish – and they are due to run out of luck very soon indeed. Utrecht are incapable of keeping clean sheets, which is the first problem that faces them when playing away from home. The second problem is that they’re travelling to Waalwijk to face one of the most consistent and impressive Eredivisie sides this season – RKC. The hosts are only lacking a finisher to become a very good side! Despite that, they’re still battling for an unprecedented UEFA Europa League place and they’re well-placed to get one, too, especially with no pressure on RKC as nobody expected anything from them but to be battling relegation. The fact is that RKC have now won five consecutive home games and have conceded just one goal during that run, which was against Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven. Everyone else has fallen to a very strong and confident RKC side and I can’t see Utrecht doing anything but following suit today.

For me, the home win is a steal at 4/5 between two mismatched sides, especially with Utrecht missing some important attackers like Demouge, Kali, and Mulenga for this game.

Verdict: RKC Waalwijk to win at 4/5.

Legia Warsaw vs Lech Poznan – home win at 11/10.

I don’t know if it’s mind games but Legia have apparently stated that Blanco, Ljuboja, Kucharczyk, Zyro, Zewlakow, and Wawrzyniak are all “doubtful” for this game. It must be mind games as Legia need three points here and Lech are no pushovers. I expect at least half of the above list to feature in this Ekstraklasa game, however, and it’s the ideal one to get Legia back on track because it’s a big game and players motivate themselves better for big games. Helpfully, this game means a lot for Lech, who are trying to secure a UEFA Europa League place, so we should see a fairly open game here. Some Lech players are still unhappy with their manager, which is why they’re still playing some pretty awful football whilst relying on the superior members of their team to bail them out where required. It’s not an ideal position to be in ahead of a trip to Warsaw!

Despite a mini-revival of late, the value has to be with hosts Legia. They’ve played better football than Lech this season and on a far more consistent basis. They’re struggling for form at the moment but they have the personnel to change that and at 11/10, I feel that they’re well worth a bet today.

Verdict: Legia Warsaw to win at 11/10.

Spartak Subotica vs Vojvodina Novi Sad – under 2 goals at 4/5.

Spartak boss Milinkovic will be relishing the prospect of facing his old club Vojvodina today as he knows them inside out. You can see how astute he is tactically by the immense defensive displays of Spartak when playing in Subotica. Add that to the opposition and you have a manager that knows how to win the game. Helpfully, they miss key attacker Covic whilst visitors Vojvodina miss Skuletic and Oumarou so they present little attacking threat here. Vojvodina are the better side but when they choose to show that and when they should show that are two very different times. Vojvodina may nick this game but they’ll have to be outstanding to score goals here. Spartak have a good manager with a well-organised side. A troubled and unpredictable Vojvodina should struggle here and thus under 2 goals appeals to me massively at 4/5.

Verdict: Under 2 goals at 4/5.

Radnicki 1923 vs Novi Pazar – home win with -1 Asian Handicap at 4/5.

Well, there’s a bit of rivalry between these two clubs which stretches back to when they faced each other in the Prva Liga. However, I strongly fancy Radnicki 1923 here and by the look of the dropping odds, I’m not the only one!

Radnicki have been excellent this season, hence only themselves and Partizan remaining unbeaten at home in the Superliga this season. Radnicki are a battling side with some good players and that can be a very hard combination for any opponent to face. The hosts have almost a full set of players in their squad today, which also helps.

Visitors Novi Pazar have already lost eight in twelve away from home this season. They average conceding nearly two goals per away game so it’s no real surprise that they’re not doing well. For today’s game, the visitors are crippled with around seven regulars missing this game. Additionally, the visitors have to cope with the loud home fans, of which there should be a lot due to free entry for fans for this game.

In my eyes, the -1 Asian Handicap on the hosts at 4/5 looks a good bet to me today with the above in mind.

Verdict: Radnicki 1923 to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 4/5.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid – home win with -1 Asian Handicap at 11/10.

Well, you all know these two sides well enough so an in-depth preview isn’t really required. All I’ll say is that Barcelona are the better team between these two but Madrid will win the league because they beat other opponents better than Barcelona do. Mourinho has tried all kinds of tactics to nullify Barcelona and to his credit, some have worked. However, it’s never stopped Barcelona from winning and I’m not sure that it will now either. Barcelona play glorious football but have been doing so for ages now, unlike Madrid. Madrid players would do well to watch clips of old Madrid games, back when they were a really good squad – they could learn a lot from them. Madrid will attack and maybe even score at Nou Camp but I expect Barcelona to score more goals. Therefore, the home win with the -1 Asian Handicap appeals to me at 11/10.

Verdict: Barcelona to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 11/10.

Atvidaberg vs Helsingborg – over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

God, what a game to have at this stage of the Allsvenskan! Crappy, newly-promoted, but mostly in-form Atvidaberg entertain a vastly superior but horribly predictable and out-of-form Helsingborg! Do yourself a favour; don’t try to pick a winner here!

However, over 2.5 goals looks a pretty nice way forward here. Atvidaberg aren’t as good as their form suggests but they’re an attacking side and thus they do score goals. Their defence is shoddy and will ship goals against any side with sufficient desire to beat them, as Mjallby demonstrated last time out. Atvidaberg are capable of causing surprises though, especially against big clubs, and I genuinely think that they’ve got the belief and the firepower to upset their more illustrious opponents today.

Helsingborg will start playing well at some point but nobody can even speculate as to when that will be. They’re still trying to incorporate their new players into their team and it’s just not working yet. Helsingborg are horribly predictable, especially in attack. They’re slow, cumbersome, and easy to block – for now. However, if they can score against anyone then it’s Atvidaberg and you have to realistically expect them to do so with the firepower in their ranks.

Again, don’t touch the 1×2 market but do consider taking over 2.5 goals at long odds as I expect Atvidaberg to really make Helsingborg work hard here and when a side like Atvidaberg controls the flow of the game, there certainly tends to be goals as a result!

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Kalmar FF vs Gefle – home win at 4/5.

Despite virutally all of their central defenders missing this game, I still really fancy Kalmar here. They’ve not impressed me much with their defence this season anyway but they gained a good three points by beating BK Hacken Goteborg 3-1 last time out. Kalmar still need some consistency but they’ve got more than enough attacking power to score goals and thus win this game here today, especially in front of their non-stop crowd. Kalmar may concede here due to their defensive absentees but they should be able to score enough goals to win the game.

Gefle are solid defensively but when they concede, they push out to get something from the game and then they concede again. Gefle are used to playing on artificial turf but this turf is natural turf, which doesn’t help them one iota here. Gefle will come to Kalmar to park the bus and hopefully leave with a draw but I’m not sure that they’re capable nowadays. Their attack and midfield are a joke! Only their defence is of any substantial quality, in my view. Gefle can piss sides off, especially from set pieces, and that will most likely be successful today too with Kalmar missing central defenders. However, for me, there’s lots of value on the home win here as there’s a big quality gap in favour of a strong home side – Kalmar.

Verdict: Kalmar FF to win at 4/5.

Bursaspor vs Istanbul BB – home win at 10/11.

Let’s ignore Bursaspor’s recent crushing at Sivasspor, as they had a gruelling journey to get there in a short space of time. When given time to prepare properly, Bursaspor have looked good in the Super Lig, particularly toward the end of the season. They’re playing good football at the moment and importantly, they’re scoring goals to boot. There is a lot of support for Bursaspor and a lot of good players in their team ala Pinto, N’Diaye etc. The quality is there for Bursaspor and at home, you have to fancy them to do it.

Istanbul BB only tend to turn up fully for Istanbul derbies, which this game clearly isn’t. They’re still a good attacking side and can score goals but they’re not a Fenerbahce, a Besiktas JK, or a Galatasaray. Istanbul BB have a ceiling when it comes to producing good displays from their decent squad and I think they’ll find that ceiling again today. There’s plenty of energy and tenacity in this Istanbul BB side – I doubt they’d be allowed to do anything else, to be honest! – and that can unsettle most sides. I doubt it’ll upset Bursaspor, though – they’re very composed on the ball. Take away the closing down and you have a vulnerable Istanbul BB defence to attack and Bursaspor will love that with the form that they’re in.

For me, there’s plenty of value on the home win today.

Verdict: Bursaspor to win at 10/11.

Eskisehirspor vs Sivasspor – lay Eskisehirspor at 4/5.

I can’s say that I understand why the hosts are as short as they are here but I hope to profit from going against them! Eskisehirspor have played well this season, especially at home, but they’ve recently stated that the Cup is their priority route to European football next season so we should expect them to rest players here. Eskisehirspor still aren’t easy to beat and they will make Sivasspor work hard here. However, Sivasspor are playing well, they’re attacking well, they’re taking their chances, and thus have a lot of confidence right now. Sivasspor aren’t anywhere near as good away from home as they are at home but they’ve got the momentum and the quality to upset their distracted hosts so I see value in laying Eskisehirspor at 4/5.

Verdict: Lay Eskisehirspor at 4/5.
