USA vs Algeria

Free

Had it not been for stupid South Korean defending yesterday, I’d have had a cleansweep – damnation! Still, hope you guys won a packet anyway.

Incidentally, congratulations to those who took my pre-World Cup bets of France to exit in the group stages at 2/1 and Nigeria to exit in the group stages at 8/11.

Today’s featured game is the World Cup game between USA and Algeria. This is a pivotal game in the group as both sides desperately need a win here to stand a chance of progression but will obviously require other results to go their way in order for them to progress.

I think the World Cup has been quite unfair for USA! I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt for their result against England, despite their fortunate goal – I think their grit and determination was enough to earn them a point. However, they conceded two silly goals against Slovenia through not doing their homework in defence against them. USA came back at them in the second-half and caused no end of problems for a very strong defensive side, pulling the scoreline back to 2-2, and should have even won it 3-2 had it not been for a bad linesman call. However, these things happen in football – what we should consider is that USA have offered a goal threat in each game despite their shaky defence and should be taken very seriously today. USA have tremendous pace in attack and whereas they lack a good source in the air as Altidore is a tad inexperienced, they still move the ball quickly and spread play very easily indeed. The drifters – Donovan and Dempsey – are essential for USA to get anywhere in this game because the space between defence and midfield is where Algeria are very susceptible. The likes of Bougherra in the middle of defence will make life hard for USA’s strikers so USA should pose some of their threat from distance, particularly given the unreliable nature of Algeria’s goalkeeper(s). USA have to spread Algeria because what they lack in ability they make up for in tenacity so USA won’t have it all their own way in this game, I daresay. However, USA need the win and they’ve got some great players in here, as well as the necessary potency to win the game so it’s worthwhile taking them seriously today.

Algeria should complete the final piece of this jigsaw by not being able to sit back. We’ve seen countless times in friendlies and in the World Cup how easily they can be torn apart at the back if they attack and frankly they’re only relatively difficult as a unit anyway. It makes no sense for Algeria to sit back, basically – they can’t defeat and they have to win this game themselves. However, Algeria have a real lack of potency in their side. Ziani drifting around midfield causes problems for opposing sides and Belhadj’s pace down the left is essential for them in both regular attacks and counter-attacks but the fact is that Algeria don’t have the finishers to do the damage here, despite USA’s ocasionally susceptible defence. I bet Algeria wish like mad that Karim Benzema had chosen to play for them rather than France! Either way, I expect an energetic display from Algeria but this is a game where they could and should be caught out by a very potent USA side.

I’m surprised that USA are as long as they are, to be honest – by my reckoning they shouldn’t be longer than 8/13 for this game, such is the gulf between the two sides in quality. A win here guarantees USA a place in the latter stages of the competition as long as they match or better England’s result. Algeria need to win and hope Slovenia beat England (unless Algeria really lay into USA!) so this game is very much an important one and thus we should see a feisty game. USA haven’t convinced in defence but they have in attack and I think they should have way too much for Algeria today. I like the odds on USA to win this game at 9/10 but I also like the idea of USA winning by two goals or more at generous odds of 23/10 because USA are definitely capable of this scoreline and goals are indeed a factor here so they won’t shut out Algeria after just a goal. There’s the additional bonus of Algeria needing to attack, irrespective of what USA do or don’t do, so there’s the capacity for a lot of goals today so even over 2.5 goals is worthy of your consideration.

Verdict: USA to win at 9/10, USA to beat the -1.75 goal handicap at 23/10.

Wednesday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Slovenia vs England – lay England at 29/20.

I’m a patriotic Englishman and it kills me to recommend this selection but I am a slave to value and this is value if I ever saw it. I doubt many of my English followers, much like myself, can bet on this game in such a fashion but perhaps some of our foreign friends can take advantage here.

England are notoriously the biggest bottlers in world football and that’s exactly what I anticipate happening today. Their display against Algeria was arguably the worst in the tournament so far with little to no penetration against arguably the worst defence in the tournament. England had no confidence, no tactics, and frankly no goal threat. Star man Wayne Rooney has been non-existant at this tournament and despite being an avid Manchester United fan myself, I’d endore dropping him until he gets his form back – he’s done nothing for this team thus far. I can’t criticise Capello for he has been excellent in charge of England but Gerrard, as one of our key players, should be in his best position to influence the game appropriately – in the middle of the park. England have had well-documented problems pre-game in the camp with womanising John Terry deciding to ignore Capello and speak out in a brave but ultimately stupid speech designed to rally the England fans and team behind him. Time will tell whether it’s effective or not but thus far, it looks very stupid indeed in my humble opinion. Terry could even be dropped for this game, which leaves the frightening prospect of England playing Dawson and Upson in defence, which could be horrific. England’s full-backs aren’t good enough defensively and there’s little innovation without Joe Cole in the side so England have a whole host of problems ahead of this game, not to mention no defined first-team goalkeeper!

Slovenia, by contrast, are very well-placed indeed to do damage here. They’re not great in attack – that is their main weakness – but what they lack in attack, they compensate for in a regimented defence. Algeria barely had a sight on goal against Slovenia and barring an abject second-half in the game against USA, Slovenia looked very composed against them too. Why can’t they do the same against England? England are offering little goal threat so the likes of Cesar at the back will cause no end of problems for the England team. A talented Samir Handanovic behind him will inspire confidence in his defenders and you can see it in Slovenia’s play too as they rarely make defensive mistakes. Slovenia will miss Kuler for this game, which may harm their atypical unbreakable defence, but they’re still very solid and let’s face it – Slovenia don’t need to win this game so why would they attack England? I doubt they will, to be honest, particularly with their strength being in defence. However, one factor that Slovenia do have in their favour that is often overlooked is their attacking pace on the counter-attack. If I was Kek, I’d start the lightning-fast Ljubljankic in this game to trouble a potentially very nervous and unfamiliar English defence because he had a lot of joy against USA and should experience similar joy today. Robert Koren will be as essential as ever for Slovenia today as he’s played in England for a few years and he’ll know they players that he’s playing against, which will undoubtedly help the Slovenians. Let’s also not forget that Slovenia have extra cause to halt England’s progress following the spat between them and Rooney when the two sides met in a friendly last year and Slovenia have openly admitted that they’d love to hamper England’s chances of progression, as well as naturally furthering their own. Slovenia are a very compact unit and are certainly not worth underestimating because they’re a very capable side on their day.

Frankly, if England play as badly today as they did against Algeria, then a half-assed Slovenia should hold this game comfortably. I expect a really tough game for England here against a very strong defence and I just can’t see them scoring enough goals to win the game. However, despite the occasionally ineffectual Slovenian attack, I do think they’ll score today because England’s defending has been poor in this tournament and they have to attack in this game. With that in mind, England need to score two – will they? Not for my money, barring a miracle. I’ll be supporting England in this game and I hope to fuck that England win but I’d be lying if I said that there wasn’t value in laying England today.

Verdict: Lay England at 29/20.

Australia vs Serbia – under 1.5 goals at 37/20.

This game has the potential to be really tight and uninteresting. Why? Well, Australia don’t really offer a goal threat and Serbia do every blue moon. In my opinion, a point here is enough to see Serbia through – I can’t see Ghana getting anything against a superior Germany side. However, Serbia will want to make sure by winning this game and they do offer the greater goal threat of these two mind-numbing sides so I’ll give them their chances here today. Serbia were poor against Ghana but excellent against Germany so it remains to be seen which Serbia side turns up here. If their solid defence plays as well as it can then Australia will not score in this game. I just wonder if Zigic will start taking his chances for Serbia and if the likes of Krasic will get forward enough to support him. Occasionally, Zigic looks a tad isolated up there so the likes of Jovanovic will be key for Serbia in linking up the midfield and attack. In my opinion, Jovanovic has been Serbia’s best player in the tournament thus far and he’ll be instrumental for them if they win this game. His pace brings them something they atypically don’t have (barring Krasic) so he’s very much essential to this side and should play a part in Serbia’s goal(s), if indeed they manage it. I have a lot of respect for Australia but they’re ageing and offer little in attack so against a strong Serbian defence, you have to feel that the Australians won’t get anything here.

I’ve got a 0-0 or 0-1 scoreline in my head here. I think these two sides will cancel each other out well with Serbia not being keen to attack under Antic and Australia attacking constantly but rather ineffectually as ever. Serbia are capable of winning this game but I have little faith in their finishers so I’ll opt for under 1.5 goals here rather than the direct Serbia win here today as I feel it represents more value.

Verdict: Under 1.5 goals at 37/20.

Ghana vs Germany – Germany to win to nil at 13/10.

Out of all the African sides in the World Cup, I think Ghana are one of the top two but that doesn’t change the fact that like most African sides in this tournament, they lack potency. Ghana have scored in both games prior to this one but let’s bear in mind that both goals were from the penalty spot and it suddenly doesn’t look as impressive. The athleticism of the Ghanaians and the talented players that they have around the park assists them massively and I feel they’ve played well in their respective games. However, the fact remains that they simply do not take their chances. A good example would perhaps be Cameroon vs Denmark the other night – how many chances did Cameroon have?! African sides have great ability to create chances but they just don’t score them! Even Nigeria experienced a similar thing against South Korea yesterday! Ghana may live to regret that fact because they’re facing a vastly superior opponent today, one who has a tremendous history of doing well at World Cups – the formidable Germany. Germany were unlucky against Serbia – it was all set for a great game before referee Medina decided to destroy the game by sending Klose off for next to nothing. I wouldn’t read much into the defeat though, if I’m honest – I still think Germany were the better side, even with ten men. However, what that game did indicate beyond reasonable doubt is that Germany don’t have good enough strikers, barring the now-suspended Klose. I still expect the creativity from emerging Turkish German midfielder Ozil to give Germany enough chances to score against a Ghana side that has to get something here today so I do see Germany scoring. Their relatively solid defence has convinced me enough in the group stages thus far for me to back them to win this game to nil too. Ghana don’t offer enough clinical finishing in attack and Germany know how to defend so you have to favour the Germans here to do what they do best by winning efficiently. I don’t see Ghana scoring here, to be blunt, but Germany almost always do, so the bet backing Germany to win to nil at 13/10 looks an interesting bet today.

Verdict: Germany to win to nil at 13/10.

Shakhtyor Soligorsk vs Belshina – home win at 3/4.

Hosts Shakhtyor Soligorsk have finally strung together a good run of results, which has at long last given them the platform to launch a good campaign, something that they’re very much capable of. It’s been coming for a long time after a few fairly disappointing seasons for the giants but they’re finally back to where they should be. The fact Shakhtyor have won more away games than home games this season is testament only to their slow start. The statistics that interest me the most are those which show that they’ve not lost a game in seven Vysshaya Liga games, winning their last five consecutively. Belarus is not typically the place for many goals to be scored but Shakhtyor are intent on changing that with an impressive thirteen goals scored in five games – an average of nearly three goals scored per game. The return of former Dinamo Minsk striker Nikolay Rynduk has helped them as he’s bagged in three out of their last four games and compliments fellow emerging striker Komarovski well. Shakhtyor score goals from all over the field so they’re a great threat at any time, which is comforting because Belshina defend well against one-dimensional sides. However, with so much going for the hosts, you have to favour them today.

I’ve nothing but respect for newly-promoted Belshina because they’re nearly impossible to beat for the vast majority of Vysshaya Liga sides. However, one common factor that the visitors cannot deal with is quality. Belshina are workers and they’re unbelievably well-organised but quality has defeated them every time this season. Belshina won the home game against Shakthyor earlier this season but Shakhtyor weren’t playing well at the time so I really wouldn’t read much into that result. Belshina have impressively picked themselves up well from heavy defeats against the likes of BATE Borisov and Dinamo Minsk so they’ve got great mental strength. Belshina have only lost twice in seven away games so they’ll give favourites Shakhtyor a tough time today.

I feel the bookies have approached this correctly, which is a real pain in the arse! I’d hoped for evens in their ignorance but nonetheless, Shakhtyor at 3/4 should still be value today as the quality gap alone should leave Shakhtyor at 1/2 and nothing longer. Belshina will hold out for a while but the tremendous potency and momentum of the hosts today should be too much for little Belshina, especially because Shakhtyor score goals from all over the park.

Verdict: Shakhtyor Soligorsk to win at 3/4.

Torpedo Zhodino vs FC Minsk – away win at 3/4.

Torpedo Zhodino have a reputation of being one of the toughest sides in Belarus to overcome on their day due to their tenacity and organisation but the combination of lost players in the transfer window and bad form has seen them sink towards the bottom of the Vysshaya Liga in rapid fashion. They’ve now lost four in seven home games this season are conceding much more than they should be. Torpedo’s strength is in keeping sides out and stealing goals to frustrate sides but they’re leaking so many goals at the moment that their overall tactical system is being destroyed by each side that they encounter. They’ve now lost seven consecutive games in all competitions and have leaked twenty-one goals along the way – which is an atrocious average of three goals conceded per game – so it’s hard to take them seriously today. They’ve scored once in their last five games, which simply isn’t good enough, and has duly led to unacceptable results i.e. losing at home to a Dinamo Brest side that don’t travel well. Torpedo are sinking rapidly and morale is at its lowest point of the season thus far so I can’t give them any chance of doing anything here today.

I’m not a big advocate of FC Minsk yet – I think they’ve still got some way to go since the two local Minsk clubs merged to create them. They’ve got ability and potential to do well so their unprecedented title challenge this season both impresses and surprises me. They’ve done very well this season but what impresses me the most about them is their ability to score goals, something that only big local rivals Dinamo Minsk have done more than themselves in the Vysshaya Liga this season. Minsk have won four times in seven away games this season, which is really a very good record in a difficult division packed full of “home sides”. Minsk average scoring nearly two goals per away game and also keep sides out rather well so I’ll give Minsk their dues today because they’ve done enough this year to give themselves a good chance of winning games like this.

Again, I feel the bookies have priced this game accurately, unfortunately, but the demise of Torpedo Zhodino makes this bet look worthwhile. If Torpedo were in-form then I wouldn’t touch this game because they’re a tough side to play against. However, morale is so low that I can only endorse going against them at the moment. FC Minsk have struggled in a couple of games of late but both were against good sides – they tend to beat lesser sides. Minsk always manage to score goals and frankly a single goal today should be enough to see them win the game, hence my recommendation today.

Verdict: FC Minsk to win at 3/4.

IFK Mariehamn vs MyPa Anjalankoski – home win at 23/20.

I think the bookies have made a mess of this one today, in spite of the Veikkausliiga being a little unpredictable of late. Why?

Well, IFK Mariehamn are the better of the two sides, for starters. They’re a strong side physically and are particularly hard to play against at home. They’ve had a terrible start to their current campaign but make no mistake here – they’re very much a side with ability. Their biggest problem has always been goalscoring but I must emphasise that goalscoring is their only problem. Unfortunately for IFK, the season started badly so their goalscoring problems resulted in low morale for the side due to poor results and things went downhill from there. However, IFK are very much back in business following some strong displays in the Veikkausliiga of late, winning 4-1 at TPS Turku, unfortunately losing 3-2 at home to rich Haka Valkeakoski, and winning 2-0 at JJK Jyvaskyla last match. Notice anything here? Yes, they’re scoring goals! An IFK side scoring goals is a very tough opponent to face and although their defence isn’t back to its best yet, their potency is unmatched at the moment and I’m surprised that the bookies have gone above evens for this one, to be honest – IFK should have too much for MyPa today!

Visitors MyPa Anjalankoski are a funny side. They’re sleeping giants but their football nowadays tends to send people to sleep rather than inspire them. MyPa’s problem is also goalscoring but on their day, they’re extremely hard to beat too. However, they’ve had a couple of setbacks of late and I’m expecting them to have dented their overall confidence. They’ve lost three out of their last five games and have won just once along the way so problems are emerging for the sleeping giants. They rarely concede many goals – the most goals that they conceded along this run were at reigning champions HJK Helsinki, which was a total of two – but if you don’t score goals then you don’t win games. MyPa lost at home to Jaro last match, which was rather unthinkable for them as Jaro haven’t played as consistently or efficiently as they’d been expected to pre-season with all of their new signings. MyPa just aren’t being consistent with their displays other than to say that they’re not scoring goals and that could do them a lot of damage in Aland today.

It’s rare I can say that IFK are scoring goals but when they are, they’re very dangerous. MyPa don’t concede many and have an unbelievably good record here but should be shot down today by a superior IFK side. I don’t think it will be a walk in the park for the hosts but there is still value on the home win, in my opinion.

Verdict: IFK Mariehamn to win at 23/20.

Vetra Vilnius vs Zalgiris Vilnius – home win at 11/10.

Derbies are always hard to call and this one will be especially because Vetra are the giants and Zalgiris are the challengers, although roles would have been reversed some time ago! Zalgiris are back in the A Lyga for the first time in two years and they’ve done oustandingly well and currently top the table as a result. However, hosts Vetra will aim to put a dent in their rivals’ surprise title challenge by beating them today. Vetra are lower in the A Lyga as they started the season with docked points but have responded well and looked their usual dominant selves. They’ve won four times in five home games and have drawn once whilst averaging scoring over two goals per game so Vetra are very much a force at home. Zalgiris’ away form is a bit hit-and-miss as you’d expect from a newly-promoted side with two wins, two draws, and one defeat in five away games. Their biggest handicap is not scoring goals away from home often enough, although their rigid defending does compensate for it rather well. Zalgiris have lost two out of their last three visits here, however, tending to enjoy the spoils of their derby against Vetra at home rather than away. Zalgiris beat Vetra earlier in the season in a reversal of this fixture but I’d be surprised to see the same outcome today as I rate Vetra as the better side.

Zalgiris were stopped from their free-flowing run of wins last match by giants Suduva Marijampole, which primes Zalgiris well for another harsh result. Vetra’s last home game was a convincing 3-1 win against Suduva Marijampole and whereas this particular factor is not my favourite for showcasing one side’s ability over another’s, it remains a valid point nonetheless. I simply feel Vetra are the better side, they’re seeking revenge for their defeat earlier this season, and they want to see Zalgiris toppled from the top of the A Lyga so the home win should be a good bet today.

Verdict: Vetra Vilnius to win at 11/10.

Mordovia Saransk vs FK Khimki – away win at 8/5.

Newly-promoted Mordovia Saransk’s honeymoon period is well and truly over with four consecutive defeats sending them surging down the table. Mordovia have impressed me since arriving in the division this year but they simply don’t score enough goals and it was only a matter of time before that hindrance caught up with them. They’ve scored one goal in their last four games and what’s happened? They’ve lost all four games. Worryingly for Mordovia, they’ve really lost control in their last two away games in the far east of Russia against Luch and Energiya respectively, leaking at least two goals in each game against two sides that don’t score many goals ever! Mordovia’s morale is now very low and thus their overall potency is too as they finally come to terms with how difficult the Russian Division 1 can be.

Visitors FK Khimki are old hands in Russia. They’ve played enough football in this division and the one above to know how to play sides which is why they’re one of the hardest sides in this division to beat. Admittedly, Khimki themselves don’t score enough goals but the difference between them and their inferior hosts today is that Khimki don’t lose games if they don’t score – they still hold on and draw. That’s why Khimki are third in the table with a very realistic shot at promotion and Mordovia Saransk are looking very vulnerable mid-table. Only league leaders Kuban Krasnodor have lost as few games as FK Khimki have this season, thus proving my point. Only Kuban have conceded fewer goals than Khimki, in fact, so again you can see Khimki’s strength. Their only weakness is not scoring enough goals, which is why they’ve won just once in six away games, although they have drawn five of them. They’ve leaked just two goals during that time but have only scored four goals so this bet certainly is a risk. However, having smashed three past Zhemchuzhina Sochi of late, I’ve got to lend some faith to the experienced promotion hopefuls so I’ll give Khimki their chances today.

Ultimately, I don’t see Mordovia Saransk scoring in this game. If they somehow manage it, then this bet is most likely to be a dead rubber so don’t go chasing it. However, Khimki’s steel defence and good form has convinced me that they have what it takes to do damage today. They are facing an inferior side so I’ll hope that the partnership of Dudchenko and Yusupov grants Khimki a goal today because if it does then they’ll surely win the game. Either way, given the horrendous run from Mordovia of late, particularly in defence, I think the odds on the Khimki win could be very good value indeed today, particularly as it should only take a single goal for them to win the game.

Verdict: FK Khimki to win at 8/5.

FK Krasnodor vs Volga Nizhnyi Novgorod – home win at evens.

How on earth are FK Krasnodor longer than 8/13 for this game?! Unbelievable!

I’ll admit that they’ve not fared well of late with no wins in two consecutive games but give them credit here – their strength is at home and both of those games were away against very good sides, one of which was a derby against Kuban! At home, FK Krasnodor have been utterly immaculate this season with six wins from six games, a record which no other side in this divison can match. They’ve notched up an amazing eighteen goals during that time, which is an average of three goals scored per game, and even more impressively they’ve only conceded twice during that run! I’ll admit that barring Shinnik at home, they’ve not had the hardest of runs, but they’ve still demolished all of their opponents comfortably. They’ll be especially keen to continue that run today given their back-to-back defeats against today’s opponents last season. Krasnodor are well-placed to do damage today too though, being as they’re one of the top four sides in the division, in my opinion, and given that their home form is currently the best in the league.

Visitors Volga Nizhnyi Novgorod are a club on the rise but they’re still not there yet. They’ve looked utterly inept away from home this season with a paltry two goals scored in seven away games, a record that all of the newly-promoted sides in this division can currently better. Indeed, only under-performing Baltika Kaliningrad have scored as few goals as Volga have on the road so they do have reason to worry today. Admittedly, Volga’s strength is in defence on the road as they’ve leaked just five goals in those seven games but the fact that they’ve drawn four times and lost three times during that run speaks volumes for the distance that Volga are from being the big side that they crave to be. V0lga are very much a home side and it’s shown a lot this season so I expect them to get punished today by a better Krasnodor side, despite the hosts having suffered a little of late.

It shouldn’t be long before Volga are promoted to the Premier League if their investment continues but that time isn’t now, in my opinion. They’re not ready yet and it’s their consistently disappointing away form which is the reasoning behind that. They’re facing a capable and potent Krasnodor side today that have been dominant at home this season and I just can’t see Volga getting anything from this game as a result – I just can’t see them matching Krasnodor’s goalscoring in this game, thus leaving us with a home win, logically!

Verdict: FK Krasnodor to win at evens.
