Vasco da Gama vs Cruzeiro

Free

Today looks like another “hmmm…” saturday rather than an “OMFG value everywhere!” saturday so be careful with your bets today, guys – lots of potential upsets on today’s card!

My featured game is the Serie A game between Vasco da Gama and Cruzeiro in Brazil. Vasco have been outstanding of late and have frankly looked unbeatable whereas visitors Cruzeiro look a mere shadow of the side that they were last year.

Vasco da Gama are an absolute machine currently thanks to one man; Gusmao. He’s the only manager in Serie A yet to lose a game and with his outstanding organisational skills in defence and his expert motivational skills, it’s easy to see why Vasco are not only looking extremely united and hard to beat but also why they look a lot like Ceara before Gusmao left them earlier this season! They’re unbeaten in nine consecutive games whilst winning three out of their four home games during that time with only high-flying local rivals Fluminense having been able to avoid defeat at Vasco during that time. They’ve conceded just three goals in their past six games, which is basically what their success hinges upon. Vasco aren’t a great side anymore but they have a great spirit and Gusmao knows how to bring that out of them. They don’t have the best finishers in the division but he has them playing like they are. It’s all about belief for Vasco, basically – they now have a lot of it and look at the results they’ve gained because of it! Momentum strongly favours them currently and I can’t help but side with them tonight as a result.

Visitors Cruzeiro simply look a very poor side this year, almost unrecognisable from the side that pushed Estudiantes De La Plata to the wire in the Copa Libertadores last season. Their defence is still fairly reliable but they look so impotent that it’s unreal! Even goal-shy Kerlon with his mazy “seal dribbling” would have contributed more to Cruzeiro’s goals tally than the likes of Thiago Ribeiro has. Wellington Paulista has basically carried Cruzeiro with his goals but he’s going to find this a very hard game indeed against an unbreakable Vasco defence so with that in mind, it’s hard to envision Cruzeiro doing much here. Cruzeiro have only scored in two out of their last four games as they stumble through their Serie A season, seeking a saviour that simply isn’t there for them. Their high league placing is indicative of a rather strange Serie A season as Cruzeiro have barely played above average this season and yet still find themselves far closer to the top than they do the bottom. Nonetheless, they should be put in their place today by a stubborn and tenacious Vasco side because Cruzeiro simply don’t look capable of dealing with that kind of pressure as they have little to offer to counter it.

Barring a red card for the hosts or a penalty to Cruzeiro, I don’t see the visitors being in this game at all. Vasco have been so good in every area of late whereas Cruzeiro have struggled in most areas barring defending so you have to favour the hosts here. Vasco have been terrific at home lately and have scored goals for fun whilst keeping it tight in defence so giving the hosts odds of 11/10 to win this game against goal-shy opponents looks a little too generous to be ignored in my view!

Verdict: Vasco da Gama to win at 11/10.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Mechelen vs Sint-Truiden – Mechelen to win to nil at 33/20.

Despite a good campaign last time around, a lot of people (myself included) feel that Sint-Truiden’s stay in the Eerste Klasse could be put into doubt this season. They’ve not been particularly productive in the transfer window, losing far more than they gained, and it’s shown in their opening games if you read between the lines. They’re still hard to beat at home but they just don’t offer a goal threat which is why they’ve been so easily beaten in their two away games so far this season. Hosts Mechelen are always strong at home and despite not a particularly great transfer window for them, they’ve started the season extremely well with four consecutive wins with their most recent win being an impressive 2-1 win at giants Club Brugge. They’ve kept consecutive clean sheets in their two home games and as such look very promising for this game today. Their one threat to that record comes in the shape of Sidibe, Sint-Truiden’s only good striker. The towering Senegalese striker is a handful on his day but if in-form Mechelen handle him then the odds on this selection today look good value to me.

Verdict: Mechelen to win to nil at 33/20.

Once Caldas Manizales vs Atletico Nacional de Medellin – home win at 21/20.

I don’t think the bookies have given Once Caldas enough respect for this game. Admittedly, the giants haven’t strung together their usual consistency yet thanks to some suicidal defending but in their defence, they have faced some hard games. A win at Millonarios Bogota last match should have got them back on track in time for this game and with goalscoring rarely a problem for the lethal partnership of Uribe and Moreno, you have to fancy Once Caldas to make their presence felt at home as they often do. Atletico Nacional have started their Primera A campaign well but they’re traditionally poor on the road so I’m not expecting much from them today against their superior hosts, despite having a good record here. Atletico Nacional themselves are a big side but have fallen down the Colombian pecking order in recent years, unfortunately, and it’s largely due to their away form that they’ve struggled. They’ve always been a competent side defensively but they don’t bring enough goals to a game to be a threat in games against potent sides like Once Caldas so I have to favour the hosts today, particularly as they’re priced a little more generously than I think they should be.

Verdict: Once Caldas Manizales to win at 21/20.

Blackburn Rovers vs Arsenal – lay Arsenal at 27/20.

It’s finally happened; Sam Allardyce has got his feet under the table at Ewood Park and now Blackburn are one of the hardest sides in the Premier League to beat at home. The effect was partially visible last season but Blackburn’s tenacious displays this season have utterly convinced me that Blackburn are going to be a real nightmare to play against this season. Unfortunately for Arsenal, this type of physical and well-organised side are the type of side that they often struggle against due to their talented but lightweight football. Arsenal struggled here last year, as indeed did all of the big four, so I don’t have high hopes for them this year, particularly as they’ve lessened in quality. You can always tell when Wenger is concerned about games like this as he highlights other physical instances from the previous week (either in Arsenal’s games or the games of other Premier League sides) and says “this is not football; it is rugby” or some other terrified rant. This week’s example was Shawcross and co. manhandling Gomes in the Stoke City vs Tottenham Hotspur game. Why does he do it? He tries to make the referees more aware and cautious over allowing physical sides to do damage to his side and I’d say he has some joy with it too. Nonetheless, Allardyce has done this style of football for long enough to know how to get away with it and with Arsenal losing quality more and more by the year, I can’t see how they’ll get something here barring a red card or an inspired display from the visitors. The odds are way too short on an Arsenal win here so I’ll be laying the visitors today as Ewood Park will be a real fortress this season.

Verdict: Lay Arsenal at 27/20.

Szolnoki MAV vs Budapest Honved – away win at 6/5.

Newly-promoted Szolnoki MAV can be commended for bringing goals to their Soproni Liga games and it’s benefited them somewhat thus far. However, what has also been established is their inability to defend and whereas it’s very good for them to beat the likes of Paksi SE 3-1 at home, the time will come when they face a better side than themselves and they’ll get caught out. My example of that would be today’s game with old hands Budapest Honved. I’m not overly fond of backing the giants because of their occasionally unpredictable nature but frankly, if they can’t string some momentum together following back-to-back wins over bitter rivals Ferencvaros and Debreceni VSC respectively then they’ve got real problems! Honved have had a really hard start to the season with a trip to now well-organised Vasas Budapest (losing 3-2 in battling fashion), a home game with bitter rivals MTK Budapest (losing 2-1 in a bad-tempered game) and then playing the other two derbies. I think they’ve represented themselves rather well during those games (barring the inevitable red cards!) so I’m relatively content to back them today. The hosts won’t sit back, which aids my bet because Honved are a good counter-attacking side and should punish them duly. Bluntly, I expect a lot of goals in this game but the visitors have more than enough in their corner to support the away win at decent odds of 6/5.

Verdict: Budapest Honved to win at 6/5.

AS Roma vs CesenaCesena to win with a +1.5 goal handicap at 10/11.

I like this bet an awful lot; probably more than I should, truth be told! I have a lot of respect for Claudio Ranieri and the terrific job he did at AS Roma last season and I’m sure we’ll see more of the same this season. The signing of unpopular Brazilian striker Adriano could prove to be an inspired choice if he regains his fitness although he’ll miss the game today through injury. Roma still have a side that is capable of challenging for the title and with such a good manager in charge, I’d frankly expect nothing less this year, particulary with Internazionale likely to struggle with tactical bumbler Benitez in charge as they showed against an average Atletico Madrid on friday night in the UEFA European Super Cup Final, losing 2-0 with ease. However, for all of Roma’s efficient displays, goalscoring is not a forté of theirs which I think will count against them oday. They’re facing a newly-promoted side, yes, but this is no ordinary relegation-battling side – this is Cesena. They were only promoted to Serie B last season and absolutely strolled their way to Serie A thanks to some superb defensive displays and clinical finishing. Cesena are an extremely compact side that are very hard to break down and I can’t see that changing on the opening day of the season as this is effectively their cup final currently. Newly-promoted sides from Serie B often do well in Serie A because the gap between the two divisions is a rather small one, in my opinion. Either way, the reason Cesena have done so well is because of the masses of experience that they have in their side i.e. Antonioli in goal (returning to face one of his former clubs today!), Lauro, Piangerelli etc. They’ve also brought in more experienced players i.e. Albanian target man Bogdani from Chievo Verona and Argentinian battling defender Maxi Pellegrino from Atalanta Bergamo so they’ve been quite clever in the market over the summer.

Ultimately – don’t expect Cesena to be a side that lies on the floor and gets walked all over. I’ll be surprised to see them lie down for anyone this season as they’re a spirited, battling side that rarely concede goals so I half-fancy them to cause an upset today at the Stadio Olimpico. By all accounts, Roma really should win this game but with the above in mind, giving Cesena a +1.5 goal handicap at 10/11 looks a steal.

Verdict: Cesena to win with +1.5 goal handicap at 10/11.

Haugesund vs Tromso – home win at 5/4.

Haugesund have stunned me this season by being absolutely untouchable at home. They’ve even overcome a very potent and in-form Valerenga Oslo side here in recent times without conceding a goal so they’ve earned the respect that I have for them now. They’ve won seven out of ten home games already this season with an average of 2.5 goals scored per home game and less than a goal conceded per home game so they’re very much the force at home. There’s an awful lot of spirit in their camp and the players co-ordinate very well indeed, making Haugesund a really tough unit to play against. Haugesund have to eye up this fixture with real interest too because although Tromso’s position in the Eliteserien table is lofty, they’re not a good enough side to earn it. I’m a partial fan of Tromso and I can tell you now that they shouldn’t be above sixth place in the table so we may just see a decline from them in the latter stages of this season because their massive flaw is finally biting them in the backside – they just don’t score goals. Their rigid, defensive displays and the nightmarish away game at the Alfheim always favours the Gutan but Tromso simply don’t travel well and seeing the distance that they have to travel for the majority of their away games, it’s no real surprise that that is the case. They’ve only lost three out of ten on the road this season but they owe that record to their defence rather than to their attack and that really could catch them out today. Tromso have looked a little weary of late as their thin squad gets more and more stretched and a game against a vibrant Haugesund side could cause them an awful lot of problems today, which is exactly what I expect to happen. The worst-case scenario here is that Tromso keep the hosts out and hold on for a draw but with such a high level of potency in Haugesund’s favour, you have to feel that odds of 5/4 on the home win look good enough to try today.

Verdict: Haugesund to win at 5/4.

Widzew Lodz vs Polonia Warsaw – away win at 23/20.

I won’t be going against Widzew much in Lodz this season because they’re a very resilient and well-organised side. The likes of Jop are paramount to them being a hard side to beat but either way, Widzew have left their mark in all of their games thus far and I expect that to continue for at least the first half of the Ekstraklasa season. Widzew’s problem was always going to be goalscoring and thus it has proven to be so far this season with just two goals scored in three Ekstraklasa games. They’re a competent enough side defensively to keep the majority of Ekstraklasa oppnents at bay but Polonia Warsaw are no longer the average Ekstraklasa side. They’ve invested heavily in their squad and their results have shown that superbly well with three wins from three games already this season. It’s not simply the fact that they’ve won those games; nor is it the momentum they’ve taken from such a run. What impresses me the most is that they’ve had to use a whole host of abilities to win their respective games but they’ve done so with ease with new players slotting seamlessly into their squad. They’ve eased past giant neighbours Legia Warsaw 3-0 already this season, not to mention winning comfortably at newly-promoted Gornik Zabrze on the opening day of the season and their win at home against bogey side Zaglebie Lubin last match despite trailing during the game. Polonia are looking a real force, to be blunt, especially with new signing Sobiech already proving his worth in attack. Bakero looks to have got forgotten man Ebi Smolarek back in business with two goals already in his Polonia Warsaw account and he looks set to have the opportunity to improve that record today as Mierzejewski misses this game through injury so Smolarek should replace him. Polonia continue to go from strength-to-strength as they recently announced the acquisition of Ruch Chorzow’s best defender Sadlok (although he’ll only join them in January) as they now look well on their way to being a legitimate title threat. Aside from the above information, consider that the hosts are 75% likely to be missing their best striker Nakoluma for this game and the odds on the away win suddenly look very tempting indeed.

Verdict: Polonia Warsaw to win at 23/20.

Flota Swinoujscie vs Piast Gliwice – over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Flota’s old advantage of playing on what I can only describe as a “swamp” may now have been lost as they’ve been forced to re-lay the pitch and it’s now a rather presentable field. This has pluses and minuses to it as Flota used to be a feared away game, not only for the journey but also because the pitch only favoured the hosts, who only played well on it because they were used to it. However, the more presentable pitch that they now boast suits their attacking style far more than the previous quagmire did. The down-side to that is that the likes of Piast Gliwice can now come here and play their game and frankly, if Piast Gliwice play their game in Liga 1, they win – no questions asked. They’re the best side in the division and giving them the opportunity to prove that is always a dangerous move. However, Flota are a capable attacking side themselves and they’ll be keen to make their home ground as feared as it was last season although this time for their potency rather than unplayable pitch. Either way, we have two very attacking sides meeting on a decent pitch with Piast missing number one goalkeeper Kozik through injury and Flota’s emerging Nigerian talent Nwaogu in attack scoring goals for fun; over 2.5 goals, anyone? The odds are good enough to take a chance on, either way.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Amkar Perm vs Rostov-na-Donu – beware!

This game is supposedly a fixed home win. Most bookies have pulled it and rumours are circling that Rostov-na-Donu are “missing” approximately eight first-team players for this game. Whether the two are directly related or not remains to be seen but I’d personally avoid this game like the plague.

Hercules Alicante vs Athletic Club de Bilbao – away win at 33/20.

Bilbao are traditionally not a good side on the road but they do normally start the season well and Hercules are a side notorious for not scoring goals so I do like this bet today. Hercules have almost finalised a deal to sign Juventus’ striker David Trezeguet, who should prove to be a key member of their fairly impotent side in their bid to beat the drop. The signing of central midfielder Aguilar from Udinese could also prove to be a good acquisition with the Colombian already having proven to be an adept player with plenty of ability. Other signings include Paraguayan attacker Valdez from Bv09 Borussia Dortmund and Cristian Pulhac from Dinamo Bucharest; two energetic players with plenty of ability so again – shrewd signings for Hercules. However, my concern for them is that their side was barely good enough to be promoted last season; why has that changed for their Primera Liga campaign? Their acquisitions have been good but they’re still some distance short of being a Primera Liga side and if they think that playing combative football against the wild cats of Bilbao today will outfox their opponents, then they need to re-evaluate their tactics very swiftly indeed!

Bilbao are easily the most tenacious side in the division and it earns them plenty of points per year as a result. They’re not amongst the more gifted sides in the division but the unity of the Basque players in their side is unmatched and their proud history is etched into the mind of every player in their side so every time a Bilbao player pulls on the famous red-and-white shirt, they give it their best shot. However, that’s not to say they don’t have talent because they certainly do. Emerging striker Iker Muniain is one of the best youngsters I’ve seen in a long, long time and if he improves his decision-making and finishing then I really don’t see why he can’t become the Spanish “Messi”, as hefty an accolade as that might seem. He’s helped in attack by gigantic Fernando Llorente, who is as adept at playing the ball on the floor as he is in the air so he’s pretty much the focal point of all Bilbao attacks – they tend to struggle without him. Bilbao also have playmaker Javi Martinez, who failed to really impress at the World Cup with Spain in the few instances he had to shine but I expected that, to be honest – he was too young to be playing in that competition. The burden of playmaking now rests entirely on his shoulders as talismanic midfielder Fran Yeste left the club in summer to seek riches in the Middle East, which was a pity as I don’t think I’ve seen a Bilbao player pass the ball as well as he did since mighty Julen Guererro! Nonetheless, Bilbao players relish the challenge and Martinez is no different but his consistency will be key to Bilbao’s success, as will the continued excellence of Markel Susaeta’s free-kicks. Bilbao have brought in a few more youngsters over the summer to compliment their youthful but talented side and the likes of Ibai Gomez could prove to be very good acquisitions indeed with the former Sestao man arriving at Bilbao with a big reputation already as a talented winger. It’s pleased me to see the likes of Oscar de Marcos pulling their weight in the pre-season friendlies too, not to mention long-term absentee Aitor Ocio in defence finally returning from injury, which allows Bilbao to deal with the inevitable loss of Amorebieta when he get suspended for too many yellow and/or red cards. Mikel San Jose looks happy to be back after returning from Liverpool and he’s added some stability to the Bilbao defence although Bilbao still look quite susceptible at left-back – just a shame Del Horno abandoned their cause many years ago, really.

Anyway, I could talk about Bilbao all day but don’t wish to digress excessively. Bilbao have looked very good pre-season both at home and away and traditionally start the season well. As long as Llorente, Martinez, and Susaeta all start this game then I’m happy to back the away win here at generous odds against a determined but rather impotent Hercules side.

Verdict: Athletic Club de Bilbao to win at 33/20.

Vaduz vs Delemont – home win at 4/5.

The odds on a Vaduz win here look far too generous and I’m not really sure why, unless the bookies are solely looking at Vaduz’s home statistics this season? It’s hard to judge the side from Liechtenstein currently as they started their Challenge League campaign with most of their players missing through illness. However, the majority have returned and back-to-back wins shows that all too well. Vaduz are a good side, one of the better sides in this division, particularly at the Rheinpark Stadion, so I don’t know why the bookies have priced the home win here longer than 4/7, to be honest. Delemont have started the season well with three wins in five games and certainly won’t make this game easy for their superior hosts. However, what I would point out is that Delemont haven’t won any games that I consider to be beyond them so I’m not going to read too much into that. They’ve not won in two consecutive games as promotion favourites Lausanne Sports put them in their place by winning 2-1 and the effects of that defeat were visible as Delemont drew with a weak Stade Nyonnais side so they appear to be struggling without their new-found momentum. Vaduz is not the side to face if you’re not at the top of your game I really feel Delemont will get burned here. For me, 4/5 on the home win is far too generous so that’s my recommendation today.

Verdict: Vaduz to win at 4/5.

Istanbul BB vs Kasimpasa – home win at 11/10.

Istanbul BB are a funny side. They’ve lived in the shadow of the other massive Istanbul clubs for years and yet they’ve always had a presentable side themselves as a 2-0 win at rivals Besiktas JK proved last match. My sole problem with today’s  hosts is that they’re not the most potent of sides and that they don’t put as much into their average games as they do into their many derbies. However, the momentum from last match should inspire them to a good display today and frankly one goal should be enough to see them win this game with Kasimpasa already setting their stall out this season as a side that doesn’t want to score or concede goals, drawing two goalless games already this season. Unfortunately for Kasimpasa, Istanbul BB have a very good record against them with four wins from their last five meetings, not to mention three consecutive home wins. Kasimpasa’s defensive tactics may work in the Super Lig as a whole but against a driven and able Istanbul BB side today, I have to favour the hosts to edge it at decent odds of 11/10 despite a somewhat quiet transfer window that only saw them bring in Swedish playmaker Samuel Holmen.

Verdict: Istanbul BB to win at 11/10.
