Vitoria Setubal vs Sporting Clube de Lisboa

Free

Gah! I couldn’t be more frustrated by some ridiculous results this weekend so let’s move on rapidly!

Today’s featured game is the only game of the day that I think has any kind of value in it and is between Vitoria Setubal and Sporting Clube de Lisboa in the Liga Sagres. Both sides are having dire seasons despite Sporting behind some seven points clear of their hosts tonight due to the variation in expectations for both sides but one thing is painfully clear – both sides need a win.

Hosts Vitoria Setubal are rooted to the bottom of the table with three defeats in their last five games. No side in the divison has conceded as many goals as they have and no side has scored as few goals as they have, which makes their league placing of 16th in a table with sixteen teams quite justified! Despite the above, Vitoria have only been beaten twice at home in five games so their record isn’t as bad as you might expect. Their biggest problem has to be their lack of goalscoring ability. They’ve shown at home that they can stop sides from playing but they simply cannot score goals themselves, which is naturally a big problem for them. Vitoria Setubal have only lost one of their last two home games with Sporting, which will give them at least partial confidence ahead of this tough game.

Visitors Sporting are also having massive problems with goalscoring. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – they’ve brought on the problems themselves by enforcing their own transfer embargo until they’re out of debt. They may get out of debt but they won’t get back in Europe if that’s the case – not with teams like Maritimo and CD Nacional rapidly beginning to catch them. Sporting aren’t losing many games at all – just two all season in the Liga Sagres – but they’re not winning many either with just three wins in eleven Liga Sagres games. They’ve now drawn their last five Liga Sagres games and are falling short of their own lofty expectations.

Although Sporting are definitely the better of these two outfits, I’m going to recommend this bet on the basis that I don’t think they’re going to score. They’re not playing well and they’re far from prolific so laying Sporting tonight seems to have some value, in my opinion.

Verdict: Lay Sporting Clube de Lisboa at 5/4.
