VVV Venlo vs Feyenoord Rotterdam

Free

After a glorious day of wins yesterday, our attention turns towards today’s featured game which is the Eredivisie encounter between VVV Venlo and Feyenoord Rotterdam. Hosts VVV Venlo have battled valiantly following promotion and have made their ground something of a fortress, losing just one home game out of nine in the Eeredivisie this season. Visitors Feyenoord are finally beginning to look themselves and currently occupy fourth place in the table and are on a good run of form.

VVV Venlo have won three out of their last five Eredivisie games so they’re not short on momentum. As I mentioned earlier, they take great pride in their home performances, a fact which is proven by their home record of four wins, four draws, and just one defeat in nine home games. VVV have proven themselves to be one of the better goalscoring sides in the division whilst playing on their own turf with an average of just under two goals scored per game. Although there’s still work to do for VVV in regards to conceding goals at home, the fact remains that they’re a difficult side to take on at home and will not make life hard for their more illustrious opponents today.

So why do I think Feyenoord Rotterdam will do the business today? Well, the reason is simple; Honda. VVV’s absolutely quintessential midfielder has moved to CSKA Moscow. The trouble is for VVV is that he was the main player in their squad; their entire footballing style was based around him and his ability. VVV now have a gaping hole where he played and it’s one that they’re not good enough as a squad to cover.

Aside from the above, Feyenoord Rotterdam are already a class above VVV Venlo in just about every area of the field, which naturally helps. Feyenoord haven’t been as good as they are now for some years so it’s somewhat refreshing to see them back on the Eredivisie title-fight scene. Feyenoord have already won five out of nine away games this season, losing just twice along the way. Few sides have conceded less away goals than Feyenoord have and the visitors enter the game on the back of a six-match unbeaten run. Feyenoord have won their last four games consecutively and have only conceded one goal along the way, which is a large factor in their continued success, and should prove pivotal in their tough game with VVV Venlo today.

All in all, the momentum of both sides should balance out quite nicely so we should have an interesting game here. However, the loss of Honda is one that VVV cannot afford to deal with, in my opinion. I cannot stress how important the Japanese midfielder was to their footballing style and for that reason I have to feel that VVV will not turn up as normal today. Aside from that, Feyenoord are good enough to punish their hosts anyway so the odds on the away win begin to look very good indeed, in my opinion.

Verdict: Feyenoord Rotterdam to win at 5/6.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC – home win at 8/5.

Hosts Newcastle Jets are currently fourth in the A-League and have won six out of their last eight games, leaving the hosts with a tremendous level of momentum. Newcastle Jets enjoy their home games immensely and have won seven out of eleven on their own turf this season, averaging just under two goals scored per game. They’ve won five out of their last six home games so they know how good they are at home. What I like about Newcastle Jets is their resilience. For example, take the game with North Queensland Fury a few weeks ago. Newcastle Jets lead 2-0 and gave it away to a 2-2 draw before eventually scoring a winner to win 3-2. They’ve had similar games against Melbourne Victory and Gold Coast United where they’ve given leads away and eventually have won the game anyway so their confidence and resilience is very strong.

Visitors Sydney FC are a good side, probably just better than Newcastle Jets, in my opinion. However, they’re really a rather strange side in the sense that none of their last six games have had more than a single goal in them, be it scored by themselves or their opponents. I’ve yet to decide whether that’s a good or bad thing because Sydney have only lost once in those six games but have won three times. Sydney haven’t any of their last three games but that’s not because they’ve done well, per se – it’s because they’ve kept their opponents out. That is a very fine weapon to bestow upon your opponents but at somepoint you will concede goals – simple fact of football. Given that Sydney have only scored one goal in their last three games, it’s easy to see how they can come unstuck. Sydney have already lost five out of eleven away games in the A-League this season so they do struggle on the road and I expect them to struggle today against a confident and potent Newcastle Jets side too.

Although this has the potential to be a very tight and even game, I can’t help but feel that hosts Newcastle Jets have got enough potency to break the stiff resolve of Sydney FC today. If that does occur then they really should win the game because Sydney FC just don’t appear to have what it takes to get back into the game of late with their stifling tactics.

Verdict: Newcastle Jets to win at 8/5.

Mechelen vs Standard de Liege – home win at 15/8.

Hosts Mechelen enter this game with some good momentum following two consecutive Eerste Klasse wins. Aside from this, Mechelen have a strong home record with five wins in eight games, losing just three times. Mechelen average scoring just under two goals per home game and generally manage to make a nuisance of themselves against whichever opponents that they face. Mechelen’s biggest problem has always been conceding too many goals but they tend to navigate their way through those issues when playing at home by scoring more than their opponents. Standard de Liege have only won here once in their last three visits so they’re fully aware of what a difficult game this can actually be for them.

Visitors Standard de Liege’s season is going from bad to worse. They’ve lost three out of their last five games, winning just once, and enter this game on the back of a humiliating 4-0 home defeat inflicted by bitter rivals Anderlecht. To rub salt in the wound, important midfielder Axel Witsel was dismissed in this game and will miss the game today as a result. As if it wasn’t bad enough already that Captain Defour was missing but now Witsel is too, which should spell disaster for Standard on its own whether you take into account their atrocious form or not. Standard are looking bereft of confidence, creativity, and any kind of reliability and look likely to succumb to defeat against the majority of Eerste Klasse opponents at the moment.

Standard have already lost four out of nine away games this season and I can’t see any reason to deny them losing a fifth away game this season because they’re looking poor and short on ideas. Standard are definitely the better side but I can’t see that counting for much today in light of the above information.

Verdict: Mechelen to win at 15/8.

Racing Genk vs Club Brugge – away win at 6/5.

Hosts Racing Genk have let themselves down this season, currently occupying tenth place in the Eerste Klasse table despite being amongst the top seven sides in the country. The predominant reason for their failing is that they’ve not won enough games – they’ve managed just one win in ten home games despite only having lost three times. Racing Genk have only scored nine goals at home all season, which means no Eerste Klasse side have scored less home goals than they have currently, hence their lack of home wins and influx of draws. Nonetheless, Racing Genk managed to cast aside their goal-shy performances by winning 3-1 at Charleroi last match so they should have some momentum and confidence entering this game. That said, Racing Genk haven’t won any of their last four home games, drawing three times and losing at home to league leaders Anderlecht, so they’ve still got a lot of work to do to prove themselves in my eyes.

Visitors Club Brugge are having a great season so far and currently occupy second place in the table. The omission of Mouscron from the Eerste Klasse table means that fortune favours Club Brugge as the gap at the top of the table is now cut to six points whilst Club Brugge have a game in hand. Club Brugge have already won six out of eight away games this season and average scoring over two goals per away game so they’re certainly a potent side this year. Club Brugge are unbeaten in five Eerste Klasse games and have won their last two games consecutively as well as their last two away games consecutively too.

Club Brugge are undoubtedly the better of these two sides and should have enough to overcome an out-of-sorts Racing Genk today, just as they have done for their last two visits to this ground.

Verdict: Club Brugge to win at 6/5.

Apollon Limassol vs AEL Limassol – home win at 5/6.

The Limassol derby today sees Apollon in better shape than AEL. Hosts Apollon are fourth in the table with no defeats in five games, winning four of those encounters and drawing the other. Apollon have only conceded two goals in those five league games and they’ve won six out of eight home games with an average of just under two goals scored per home game. Only league leaders APOEL Nicosia have conceded as few goals at home as Apollon Limassol have this season so the hosts are well-placed for their derby today, particularly in regards to momentum and confidence.

Visitors AEL Limassol certainly dominate the head-to-head statistics as they’ve not lost to Apollon in any meeting since 2007 – a total of six games. However, visitors AEL are not in the best shape entering this game, which is why I’ve gone against them today. AEL have already lost five out of eight away games this season despite being one of the lowest conceding away sides in the division. Their problem is goalscoring, something that they’re amongst the lowest sides in the division for doing. To top the above statistics off, AEL have only won once in their last five games, losing three of those games and drawing just once.

With the above information in mind, it’s hard to see this game being anything but a very tight and dogged encounter. However, there’s enough favouring the home side to substantiate a good value bet today on the home win so that’s what I’m calling!

Verdict: Apollon Limassol to win at 5/6.

Ethnikos Achnas vs Doxa – home win at 10/11.

Ethnikos Achnas enter this game on the back of a morale-boosting run of five games without defeat, winning twice and drawing three times. The momentum that today’s hosts have gathered along the way is strong and they’ll fight tooth and nail for every ball in this game. Ethnikos Achnas know that their strength is their home form which is why they’ve won four out of eight home games already this season, a run which includes the impressive scalp of Omonia Nicosia in their most recent home game. With such strong momentum and home advantage in favour of Ethnikos Achnas today, you have to feel that they’re capable of taking all three points.

However, the above isn’t complete without the unlikelihood of the visitors turning up but Doxa will surely oblige as they’ve lost two of their last three games and have already lost four out of eight away games this season. Doxa simply don’t score enough goals and their lack of momentum makes me think that they’re not going to resolve that particular issue today either. Doxa frankly aren’t as good as Ethnikos Achnas and don’t have the necessary requirements to match them today as a one-off so you have to feel that the value is in the home win today for a confident Ethnikos Achnas.

Verdict: Ethnikos Achnas to win at 10/11.

Panthrakikos vs Xanthi – lay Xanthi at 15/8.

I cannot disguise the fact that Panthrakikos are the worst side in the Greek Super League; fact. There have only been two games out of the eighteen played in the Super League this season that Panthrakikos haven’t lost, in fact! However – luck has a strange way of working. Panthrakikos will win a game this season at somepoint – that’s just how it will work, somehow. Panthrakikos have actually started to score goals of late, scoring in two out of their last three so they’re at least getting partially better in their miserly way. However, they’re not going to have a better opportunity this season to take three points from a game than they are against Xanthi today because Xanthi are a horrendous away side. Xanthi are undoutedly the better of these two sides but they’ve lost six out of eight away games already this season and have drawn the other two games all of which has been done without Xanthi even managing to score a goal! Yes, that’s right – Xanthi are the only side in the Super League that haven’t scored away from home this season. It’s quite remarkable really because only the top three sides in the Super League have conceded less away goals than Xanthi but it stands to reason that if you don’t score goals then you’re not going to win games. I frankly find the bookes odds of 1/3 on the away win laughable when you consider that Xanthi haven’t scored an away goal all season so I think that laying Xanthi at 15/8 certainly has some value in it somewhere although it is a risky punt, of course!

Verdict: Lay Xanthi at 15/8.

Aris Salonika vs Panathinaikos – away win at 11/10.

Aris Salonika are a side that I respect a lot, particularly when they’re playing at home, but today I’m breaking that respect in favour of their more illustrious visitors. I can’t explain it in-depth because there’s not an awful lot to explain – Panathinaikos are simply a better side and have proven their quality to such an extent this season that I believe that they’ll win this game. They’ve won here for two out of their last three visits and have beaten Aris in all of their last four meetings. Panathinaikos look more determined than ever to topple Olympiakos Piraeus’ crown and with their bitter rivals faltering under Zico at the moment, I feel that Panathinaikos will be even more motivated to put more daylight between themselves and their bitter rivals by winning today. Aris have just as strong momentum as Panathinaikos and are formidable at home so this game is far from a dead certain away win but I simply feel there’s enough quality and motivation in the Panathinaikos camp to ensure that three points belong to the visitors at the end of the game.

Verdict: Panathinaikos to win at 11/10.

Olympiakos Piraeus vs PAOK Salonika – lay Olympiakos Piraeus at 13/10.

I cannot wait for the day that Olympiakos Piraeus become one of the latest clubs to discover how shit a manager Zico actually is because then they’ll become a far more reliable side to back again, which is great news for all of us! However, for now Olympiakos remain a large question mark with their poor performances and poor run of recent results. They’ve won just two out of their last five games, losing twice and drawing once along the way. They’ve won six out of nine home games this season but have been unconvincing of late with a defeat at home by local rivals AEK Athens and an unconvincing win over poor-travelling Larissa. To put it bluntly – Olympiakos simply aren’t playing well and a goalless draw at Kavala last match indicates that they really do have problems ’cause there aren’t many Olympiakos sides that I can name that don’t score goals in any Super League game!

Visitors PAOK Salonika are one of the “chasing pack” in the Super League i.e. they usually finish between fourth and sixth in the table. They’re a competent and able side and enter this game on the back of a six game run wtihout defeat, winning five times and drawing once. The most fascinating fact about that run is that PAOK have managed to play in all of those games without conceding a single goal, so my applause and respect goes to them for this remarkable feat. As a result, the momentum and confidence of PAOK is sky high and they’ll make life extremely uncomfortable for reigning champions Olympiakos today, particularly as they’ve only lost two away games in the Super League this season and with the additional information that only today’s hosts and league leaders Panathinaikos have conceded as few goals on the road as they have.

Only a fortunate late goal gifted Olympiakos victory at PAOK earlier this season; I think it’s going to take a lot more than that for them to secure victory today. PAOK’s defence is water-tight entering this game and they’ve got absolutely everything they need to make a real nuisance of themselves today. However, PAOK aren’t as good as Olympiakos so you still need the hosts to under-perform and as fortune would have it, Olympiakos haven’t played as badly so consistently for some time now so I think laying Olympiakos today boasts considerable value.

Verdict: Lay Olympiakos Piraeus at 13/10.

Siena vs Cagliari – away win at 7/5.

Hosts Siena are a side I feel a bit sorry for. They’ve lost four consecutive games now, destroying their momentum entirely, but those four games have been nightmare games against Palermo, Fiorentina, and the two Milanese clubs. I mean, how many clubs can claim to have scored three goals at the San Siro against Internazionale and still emerged with nothing at the end of the game? Not many. Siena have suffered more than most sides in their last four games because they didn’t have much momentum to begin. Not only that but Siena at least had some dignity prior to those four games. However, after being ravaged for three successive games now, Siena are even devoid of their dignity. They’ve leaked fourteen goals in their past four games, which is an average of nearly four goals conceded per game, and they’re frankly at rock-bottom both mentally and also in a league table sense. With five defeats from ten home games this season and nothing to pick them up from the mess that they’re in, Siena look prime candidates to lose their game today.

Visitors Cagliari aren’t a side I like backing away from home because they’re very much a home side in my opinion. However, having gone four games unbeaten now, Cagliari have now come back onto my radar. They’ve claimed two impressive draws at home to AS Roma and SSC Napoli respectively before winning two consecutive games at battling Bologna and then crushing Catania at home. As a result of their recent run, confidence and momentum are sky high for Cagliari and their potency is through the roof with a tally of nine goals scored in their past four games – an average of over two goals scored per game. Cagliari have already won four out of nine away games this season and only the two Milanese clubs have conceded less away goals than they have in Serie A this season.

To put it bluntly – Cagliari are not going to have a better chance of winning at Siena than they do today and I fully expect them to take this chance with both hands, to use everything in their favour, and ultimately secure three points from this game.

Verdict: Cagliari to win at 7/5.

Groningen vs Twente Enschede – away win at 10/11.

Groningen have been beaten just once in their last four games, winning their last two games consecutively as they seek to progress up the table. Although the sides that they’ve beaten are far from world-beaters, the momentum gathered from those wins will still be good. Groningen are a presentable outfit at home with just four defeats in nine home games this season in the Eredivisie so they’re a bit of a handful for the majority of their opponents. Groningen are the second-lowest goalscoring home side in the division but tend to compensate for this by conceding few goals a home. With the wind in their sails at the moment, Groningen will make Twente work hard to take anything from this game so a difficult game looms.

However, Twente are a very capable side and the fact that they’re unbeaten in the Eredivisie this season illustrates this point perfectly. Twente have already won seven out of nine away games this season and average scoring two goals per away game to boot. Only league leaders PSV Eindhoven have conceded less away goals than Twente have this season and although Twente drew at Utrecht last match, the momentum that they have is still phenomenally strong, as is the belief in their ability on the pitch.

Ultimately, Twente are too good for Groningen with or without momentum. Groningen will make this game very difficult for Twente but Twente love to get stuck into difficult opponents so I think there’s value on the away for the better side here today.

Verdict: Twente Enschede to win at 10/11.

Deportivo Xerez vs Osasuna – away win at 5/4.

The Primera Liga’s whipping boys, Deportivo Xerez, today entertain yet another side that is better than them in the sense that they’re facing another side from the same division. Xerez have resorted to stopping other sides scoring in submission of the fact that they cannot score goals themselves. Xerez have already lost six out of nine home games this season and have scored just four times along the way. Although Xerez will have taken some momentum from their draw last match, the fact remains that they’re an atrocious side in whichever light you look at it and are unlikely to score against…well, anyone.

Visitors Osasuna are a side that I have a lot of time and patience for. As a devoted Athletic Club de Bilbao fan, this is perhaps wrong of me, but I still enjoy their full-blooded style and determination. Osasuna don’t have a good away record with five defeats in nine away games and certainly prefer their home games in Pamplona but who needs an away record against a terrible Xerez side? Osasuna emerged from a barren run of form of late by beating Espanyol 2-0 in their last match so the Basque outfit do bring some momentum into this game. As I touched upon briefly earlier, however, Osasuna don’t need to do a lot to take three points from this game as they’re twice the side that Xerez are.

Although I think Xerez will try their usual trick of keeping their opponents out rather than attempting to score themselves, I don’t think it’ll last for the duration. Xerez tend to withstand sides for about seventy minutes before eventually succumbing to them. I think we’ll see a scrappy game with a relatively comfortable away win for Osasuna because the visitors can and will take their chances as they’ve always done in the Primera Liga.

Verdict: Osasuna to win at 5/4.

Alcorcon vs Real Oviedo – home win at 4/5.

Group leaders Alcorcon enter this game on the back of four consecutive wins so their confidence and momentum are through the roof at the moment. They’ve already won eight out of ten home games this season with just one defeat along the way whilst averaging nearly two goals scored per home game. Only a handful of sides in their group have conceded less home goals than Alcorcon have this season so the hosts are well-placed to take three points today. Alcorcon’s season was only really kick-started when they managed their heroic Copa del Rey victory over Real Madrid but what an impact its had on little Alcorcon with them now looking to claim a place in the Segunda Liga next season – they’re certainly playing the level of football that you need to be there too!

Visitors Real Oviedo will remember the days of being a big side all too well although those days are purely memories at least for the time being. With four defeats from ten away games this season, Real Oviedo are far from an easy ride away from home but they’re certainly capable of being undone by a good side which is exactly what I expect to happen today. Oviedo don’t concede excessively but they’re amongst the lower scoring sides in the division when playing away from home so they’re going to struggle against mighty Alcorcon today. Oviedo’s form of late has fluctuated as they continue to steamroller onwards when playing at home and continue to struggle playing away from home, losing their last match convincingly at Universidad Las Palmas.

With the above information in mind, you have to feel that the home win should be somewhat straightforward for in-form Alcorcon against an Oviedo side that are gradually beginning to look rather weak on the road.

Verdict: Alcorcon to win at 4/5.

Recommended bets:

A four-team Spanish accumulator including Valencia, Cordoba, Sabadell, and Osasuna looks good value at 8/1.

A four-team accumulator between Spain and the Benelux region including Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Feyenoord Rotterdam, and Club Brugge at 7/1 also looks a good call today.

My final four-team accumulator includes Sant Andreu, Ceuta, Panathinaikos, and Twente Enschede at 6/1. Panathinaikos and Twente both have difficult away games but success there should compliment the two “dead certs” well.
