Today’s free tip is in the Hungarian Liga 1 encounter between Varda SE and Paksi SE.

I don’t even know what to say about Paksi SE anymore. They’re just hilariously brilliant. For a limited team with only Hungarians in their squad, they play some fantastic football. They’re as good at conceding as they are at scoring though, and I doubt that’ll change against Varda SE today. Only Paksi SE could go from winning 3-0 away from home against the reigning champions Ferencvaros to losing 3-2 at home against Gyirmot! Say what you like about them, though – they’re still very entertaining. Indeed, there aren’t many teams I prefer to watch than them right now – I mean, I am a Manchester United fan after all, and we’ve been poor to watch for a while now!

Genuinely, they’re a tremendous watch though. They should be even more amusing today with defensive midfielder Windecker suspended too. It doesn’t matter though; they’ll just attack anyway, and who can blame them with Adam in the form of his life? I love how this team plucks players from complete obscurity and turns them into good players though. Adam will unquestionably move on at some point, and Paksi SE will find a cost effective solution that does the job just as well. It’s truly remarkable.

I mean, don’t forget that they lost playmaker Bognar mid-season; he took off for a late sojourn to Cyprus. Nothing derails Paksi SE on their mission to score as many goals as is possible in every single game though. They make no attempts to keep teams out because they’re simply not very good at it, hence the occasional fielding of attacker Bode in defence. It’s guaranteed entertainment though, and usually guaranteed goals too.

Varda SE are no shrinking violets either though. Despite the somewhat inevitable loss of their most prized asset, manager Janeiro, Eros has done a sterling job in his stead. This team just keeps powering through every single obstacle laid before them. They even overcame the Bumba saga in which he was technically sold to Fehervar but they pulled out at the last moment when the player’s agent said he didn’t want it to happen. This is so he could leave at the end of the season on a free. The Varda SE director Revesz threatened to never play him again but he was in the squad last time around so…

With Bumba in their squad, they can trouble most teams, let alone a shocking Paksi SE defence. The support they get from overlapping ufll-backs Leoni and Hej is very dangerous too, and they’ve got multiple good options in midfield alongside Bumba to help out Bosian hitman Mesanovic. They’re good in all attacking situations really, although where they differ from today’s opposition is that they can defend. Well, some of the time at least!

It’s a good group that Varda SE have though. It’s nice to see Hungarian teams growing that don’t have boatloads of money to fall back on. I mean, seeing how Fehervar have failed with that avenue for so long now is proof that money is not everything. Puskas FC is another fine example. They’ve been really good this season, to be fair to them, but when were they last this good? Have they ever been this good? That’s the better question. Clubs like Varda SE and Paksi SE are what makes Hungarian football good, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Hungarian national team has really begun to flourish since teams like this came to the fore. Whether giving players a chance or forcing richer opponents to be better, they’ve raised the bar.

As far as the meeting between the two teams goes, I expect a very open game, littered with chances. Who wins is a coin toss, but I’d take over 3 Asian goals every day of the week in a game like this one.

Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 49/50.
