Today’s free tip is in the Danish Superligaen encounter between Silkeborg and FC Nordsjaelland.

I’m not a complete moron, folks – I know how good Silkeborg have been in the Superligaen over the past couple of seasons, and I know that FC Nordsjaelland being top of the ladder at the moment is predominantly the work of other top Danish teams not showing up often enough. Those points aside though, I still find it very difficult to grasp why the visitors are priced as long as they are here.

Sure, FC Nordsjaelland are a young team – but then again, they are every year. That’s because they’re a selling club. I still don’t honestly know how they do what they do, constantly finding these amazingly talented players and selling them profit whilst barely spending a bean, but they still do it. What I’ve noticed happening since that trend is that a lot of players now feel that they ‘owe’ FC Nordsjaelland too, so some of them won’t hesitate to come back, should a realistic opportunity arise, as has been the case recently with playmaker Marcondes and striker Faghir, both of which are far too good for this level.

I think it’s fair to say that FC Nordsjaelland play their own brand of attacking football in Denmark too, something that other players like to be a part of. They took some criticism over the past couple of years because they didn’t press well enough, but their attacking is really rather impressive. As usual, they’re getting the most out of their African imports but it’s also nice to see Swedish wonderkid Nygren finally getting back toward his best. Faghir and Marcondes joining was just the cherry on the cake, really – and that’s what suddenly makes Danish folk think that this random group might just be capable of winning the title after all. It’s been a while, huh?

The beauty of FC Nordsjaelland is that they play without pressure. Other than to play good football, there’s no expectation on their shoulders whatsoever. Subsequently, their players play with smiles on their faces, and they’re all on the same page – trying to impress enough to earn a lucrative move to a bigger European league. Everything feels very authentic and healthy in Farum, in other words. They’re not perfect, but they do tend to give a good account of themselves, and with the match-winners they’ve now got on their books, I find it hard to believe that they’ll lose against Silkeborg.

Silkeborg have struggled a little in 2023, although it’s become more and more apparent with time that if left to his own devices, Nielsen will sort them out. He’s proven himself to be a very adept manager since they were promoted, deploying multiple different styles. I still remember how frighteningly good they were in their first campaign back in the Superligaen; for half a season, none of the other clubs knew how to deal with them. That’s how good Nielsen is because this is not a great team.

On top of the above, Silkeborg are in no position to keep hold of players. If another club is interested in their top dogs, then they leave. Defender Carstensen (Racing Genk) and midfielder Vallys (Brondby) are the more recent examples, although I still think that Mattsson rankles the most. It’s credit to them that they’re able to sell such players for profit, but unlike today’s opponents, they don’t have a conveyor belt behind the scenes to replace key players. Subsequently, they have little lulls, which is how I personally interpret their current campaign.

I still wouldn’t want to underestimate Silkeborg. They’re motivated, they’ve got excellent cohesion, and they work bloody hard. They won’t give anything away for free. However, I find them a touch lacking at both ends now, and at the business end of the season that’s particularly damaging. The only one that can improve things for them is Kusk but he’s not been at his best in years. A draw, I could accept, but not a home win, given the circumstances. For me, the value lies in backing the visitors, especially with their two new match-winners in mind.

Verdict: FC Nordsjaelland to win with draw no bet at 22/25.
