Today’s free tip is in the Brazilian Serie A encounter between Fortaleza and Gremio.
I’ve never been a big advocate of backing Gremio away from home. Even during their glory years, they were never any good at it. At home, yes – they can defeat most Serie A teams on their day. Away from home? Nope.
However, I’m going against my own ‘rule’ here. Why? Well, Fortaleza have one of the biggest games in their history coming up a few days from now when they face Corinthians in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana affair, which is a competition that they have a genuine chance of winning. This tournament is not a priority for most South American teams but for minnows Fortaleza, it’s a big deal, especially in the latter stages of the competition. Subsequently, I expect them to treat it like most South American teams treat the Copa Libertadores i.e. as the main priority. When that happens, the team in question tends to rest a lot of regulars.
As much as I like Fortaleza, they are not a top team in Brazil. Therefore, if they rest players for this game, they’re going to deliver a very below average display, which is something that Gremio should be able to capitalise upon. Gremio have no distractions, they’ve just beaten a superb Palmeiras in order to keep their title hopes alive, and they have a better squad on paper anyway. It’s not a game that Gremio should be losing, to phrase it bluntly.
They’ve still got some good players under Gaucho’s command, not least Uruguayan legend Luis Suarez. Cristaldo in midfield has excelled this season, and he’s really not the only one. Gaucho has done a sterling job with this group, and they don’t appear to be showing any signs of slowing down. At a time when most Brazilian teams are struggling with fixture congestion, Gremio are thriving and I’d like to think that they’d make that count against what should be Fortaleza’s “B” team.
Verdict: Gremio to win with draw no bet at 5/6.
