Terek Grozny vs Rostov-na-Donu

Free

Today’s featured game is the Russian Premier League game between Terek Grozny and Rostov-na-Donu. By Russia’s geographical standards, this is virtually a derby! However, Grozny has long been a feared away game for any Russian Premier League side and that hasn’t changed ahead of today’s game so I expect a good display from the hosts today with them already having the mental advantage.

Terek are traditionally strong at home due to their intimidating fortress, enthusiastic displays, and goal-filled performances. Terek won seven out of fifteen home games last season despite finishing just above the drop zone and finished the season as one of the top goalscoring sides at home with a total of twenty-five goals scored in those fifteen games. Terek are experienced campaigners when it comes to fighting the drop in this division as they’ve been perfecting it for some time now. The way that Terek started their current campaign shows their desire to yet again beat the drop by winning at newly-promoted Sibir Novosibirsk 2-0 despite the hosts on that day having earned a reputation in the Russian Division 1 as a strong home side. Terek know they have to beat the sides that are going to be battling relegation with themselves and Rostov-na-Donu are no exception to this. Terek will have taken great momentum from their opening day win and will be looking to further that momentum today with their first home win of the season. Indeed, Terek will need all the help they can get as they have a somewhat shocking record against Rostov of having never beaten them in the Premier League despite four attempts to date! However, times have changed and Terek are looking good to break that growing tradition.

Rostov-na-Donu only just managed to avoid the drop last season but have done little to cement their place in the Premier League ahead of the current campaign, which should mean that they’ll struggle this season. Rostov were notoriously poor away from home last season with eight defeats in fifteen away games, scoring less than a goal per game on average whilst averaging conceding over 1.5 goals per away game. Rostov’s problem has long been goalscoring and this issue doesn’t appear to have been resolved over the break either with Rostov losing their first game of this campaign 2-0 at home to Tom Tomsk. Rostov tend to be quite good at home, in terms of avoiding defeat at least, but they appear to have lost that too if their debut appearance this season is anything to go by! They failed to register a goal against a poor Tom Tomsk side that not only will be battling with Rostov to stay in the Premier League this season but also a Tom Tomsk side that don’t travel well. Rostov simply don’t appear to have what it takes to stay in the Premier League this season so I do expect them to struggle before eventually succumbing to the awaiting depths below them.

We have two sides here that will be battling relegation but only one that could be relegated, in my opinion, and that is Rostov-na-Donu. Terek are a good side with good players, they’re experienced in this division and they’re a bloody good home side. Grozny is such a hard place to go and play football so despite Rostov only having had to make one of their shortest trips in the Premier League to play here, I expect it to be one of their most difficult games. Rostov are already showing problems with goalscoring and goals being conceded too easily whereas Terek are doing the complete opposite. For me, there’s only one winner today and that’s Terek Grozny, who should finally lift the curse of Rostov-na-Donu at what I would personally call very generous odds!

Verdict: Terek Grozny to win at 10/11.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Lanus vs Racing Club Avellaneda – home win at 6/5.

I’m hoping today that Lanus can finally put a stop to the rot in Argentinian betting today by restoring a bit of parity in a somewhat unstable division.

The hosts have only been beaten once at home this season in four games whilst winning twice and drawing once. They tend to play some good attacking football but their horrendous defending tends to mean that the only sides that they beat are those that don’t score many goals. Only giants Boca Juniors, bizarrely, have conceded more goals than Lanus have in the Primera Division Clausura, so tonight’s hosts do concede too many – fact. However, only a handful of sides have scored more goals than they have too so Lanus are certainly worth their money in terms of neutral viewing! Nonetheless, Lanus remain a good home side and they’re going to need it to survive if their current miserly away form continues. Lanus will be pleased to see their opponents Racing turn up today as the visitors haven’t beaten Lanus at either ground in their last five attempts and if ever Lanus required a mental boost then it’s now. Lanus are without a win in three games but two of those games were away (against giants Velez Sarsfield and in-form Godoy Cruz de Mendoza) and the other was at home to giants Estudiantes De La Plata so I can accept their poor run of form. Lanus remain a good side and I’m hoping that their lack of wins lately hasn’t impacted their confidence too heavily.

Visitors Racing Club Avellaneda have had a mixed Clausura so far but their one consistency has been dire performances on the road. Racing have lost three out of four away games whilst scoring just three times. Racing enter this game on the back of a demoralising 1-0 home defeat against Argentinos Juniors so their confidence has taken a bit of a knock, particularly as they didn’t even manage to score in that game. Racing have got some good players but seem to enjoy never fulfilling their potential nowadays and their current campaign isn’t looking any different. As I mentioned earlier, Racing don’t have a good record against Lanus and have lost two out of their last three games against tonight’s hosts. In fact, on their last two visits here, Racing have conceded six goals in total so they look set for a tough night defensively if their past form here is anything to go by!

Although there’s not masses between these two sides in terms of quality, Lanus are at least scoring goals and performing consistently at home. Racing are under-performing as usual and are disappointing on the road so I feel that the bookies are being somewhat generous with the odds on the home win tonight despite the poor form of late of both sides.

Verdict: Lanus to win at 6/5.

SV Mattersburg vs LASK Linz – home win at evens.

SV Mattersburg have returned from the winter break with renewed vigour and even a vague swipe at consistency! They’ve not lost either of their two home games against Austria Vienna or Wiener Neustadt, even beating the latter side! Mattersburg have been crushed at Sturm Graz and SV Ried but frankly you’d expect that against two very good sides, particularly as Mattersburg don’t travel well. That said, Mattersburg won 4-2 at bottom club Austria Karnten so you can tell that they’re in-form as they simply don’t win on the road!! Mattersburg are reliable at home though with six wins in eleven games and average scoring two goals per home game so they tend to have enough in their favour to do significant damage to their opponents.

Their opponents today are the bizarre LASK Linz, a side that concedes an average of over three goals per away game but are one of the top goalscoring sides in the Bundesliga despite fighting against relegation! Is there an odder side? If so, I don’t want to know about them! LASK are consistently poor on the road with nine defeats in twelve games and their horrendous defending tends to account for just why that is. That said, LASK Linz won their last away game 1-0 at Austria Vienna, remarkably! I can only explain this result as some kind of rip in the space time continuum and assume that parity will be restored today with LASK conceding heavily.

LASK have lost their last two visits here consecutively, which takes their tally to three defeats in their last four visits here. The games between these two sides tend to include a lot of goals so over 2.5 gols or even 3.5 goals may be worthy of consideration. However, Mattersburg are reliable at home and have been since returning from the winter break so I expect them to increase LASK’s poor record on the road today by beating them at good odds.

Verdict: SV Mattersburg to win at evens.

Sturm Graz vs Rapid Vienna – home win at 13/10.

Verdict: Sturm Graz to win at 13/10.

Levski Sofia vs Slavia Sofia – lay Levski Sofia at 6/4.

This should be a difficult game for Levski Sofia, partially because it’s a derby and partially because they’ve not played particularly well since returning from their winter break. Levski have won five out of nine home games in the A PFG this season which is a decent record but not as good as you’d expect from them, really. Levksi are scoring the required goals but have conceded more goals at home than any other side in the top seven, hence their issues. Levski were dealt a 3-0 demolition by title rivals Litex Lovech last match so confidence is low and cohesion simply isn’t there. Therefore, we have a struggling Levski Sofia.

Slavia Sofia are not one of the big Sofia clubs. Indeed, they tend to focus their intensity around keeping other sides out whereas the bigger Sofia sides tend to try and blast their opponents away with quality and goalscoring. Nonetheless, Slavia Sofia are effective at what they do and only rivals CSKA Sofia have conceded less goals on the road than they have this season. Slavia Sofia don’t score as many as they should but their stout defence tends to give them a helping hand where required. Slavia Sofia are yet to concede a goal since returning from the winter break so are well-placed to cause a Levski Sofia side with a lack of cohesion a lot of problems today.

Levski have a superb record against Slavia, unfortunately, and are the better side so do approach with caution. However, I feel the bookies have over-priced Levski given their poor football of late and I feel that Slavia Sofia can at least hold them to a 0-0 draw today.

Verdict: Lay Levski Sofia at 6/4.

Vartes Varazdin vs Cibalia Vinkovci – away win at evens.

Cibalia Vinkovci aren’t a side that you’ll see me back away from home very often because they’re not that good a side they’re frankly not clinical enough. However, they’re facing a Varteks Varazdin with a lot of financial issues and a Varteks side that have had to sell some big players during the transfer window. As a result, Varteks have been horrendous since returning from their winter break and relegation now looks a very realistic possibility if things don’t improve. They’ve conceded seven goals in their last three games without reply and are sinking rapidly. They even suffered an embarassing defeat at home to Istra 1961, one of the worst away sides in the Prva Liga, so things are looking bleak for Varteks. Cibalia aren’t a great side but they’re a good side and build their success around efficiency, organisation, and consistency, three things that they’re rarely short of. They’ve won two out of their three games since returning from the winter break and have remained unbeaten throughout so they bring good momentum into this game. Cibalia have only won four times in ten away games this season but frankly scoring a solitary goal at Varteks really should be enough to win this game today so I think we’ve got good odds on it happening, particularly with Cibalia having scored four goals in three games lately.

Verdict: Cibalia Vinkovci to win at evens.

Marila Pribram vs Jablonec – home win at 17/10.

These odds are way too long! Pribram take all their points at home which is why they’ve won six in eight home games with just one defeat this season. They don’t score many but they don’t concede many either. They’re one of the strongest home sides in the division however so why they’re 17/10 baffles me. They won this fixture last season and Jablonec have failed to register a goal against Pribram in three out of their last four attempts at either ground so 17/10 on the home win here looks very generous indeed.

Jablonec are a good side but the bookies are giving them odds that I’d expect them to give the likes of Slavia or Sparta Prague and Jablonec frankly aren’t as good as the giants are! Jablonec are a good, hard-working side which is mixed with some talent and the ability to hold low leads. There’s a good reason that Jablonec have only won four times in nine away games and it’s because they’re not very good at it! They don’t score enough goals away from home so why a marshalled Pribram defence would be any different is beyond me.

There’s not as much between these two sides as the bookies seem to suggest so there definitely looks to be some value in the home win.

Verdict: Marila Pribram to win at 17/10.

Kladno vs Viktoria Plzen – away win at 10/11.

This game is being played at a neutral venue so cast aside those doubts you have of Viktoria Plzen as an away side!

Kladno are an absymal side; Viktoria Plzen are an over-achieving mid-table side. Kladno have been on the cusp of relegation for some time now but they surely have to go down this season. No other side in the Gambrinus Liga has lost as many home games as they have – seven in nine! – and only Bohemians 1905 have scored less goals than they have so why they’re still considered a threat to…well, anyone is beyond me!

Viktoria Plzen are a capable side, nothing more. They’re similar to Jablonec in terms of them favouring efficiency over flambuoyancy but they do boast a better defensive record than Jablonec on the road – the best one in the Gambrinus Liga, in fact – well, joint with Sparta Prague! Viktoria Plzen don’t score many goals but they’re not going to need many to beat Kladno today. Plzen have done well since returning from the winter break by drawing with high-flying Banik Ostrava, beating Slovan Liberec and Bohemians 1905 convincingly, and by losing a tough game 2-1 at Teplice in a battling display. Plzen bring good momentum into this game as a result and really should have enough to dispose of Kladno today.

Verdict: Viktoria Plzen to win at 10/11.

Wigan Athletic vs Burnley – home win at 4/5.

I hate betting on Wigan but you have to against Burnley. Burnley are the worst away side in this division because they cannot defend; fact. How Burnley thought it was a good idea to replace Owen Coyle with a manager that wasn’t good even to manage in the Championship is beyond me but they’ll most likely learn from their mistakes when they’re relegated. The fact is that Burnley concede excessively on the road and lose the vast majority of their games as a result. Wigan are the most inconsistent side in this division but one thing that Martinez has brought to this club is goalscoring, something that Wigan can do at any moment. They’ve got some classy players and some creative players and basically should have too much for Burnley today, simply put!

Verdict: Wigan Athletic to win at 4/5.

Blackpool vs Crystal Palace – home win at 5/6.

Palace don’t lose many on the road, interestingly enough, although I expect that to change between now and of the season. Palace were Neil Warnock but his departure leaves them looking fragile and lacking in confidence. Palace haven’t scored a goal since he left but have lost twice and drawn once so relegation begins to loom ominously again. Palace aren’t conceding many but when you’re not scoring goals, one goal tends to be enough to defeat you! Blackpool are one of the strongest home sides in the division with ten wins in eighteen home games. The reason Blackpool do so well is not only their dogged tenacity but their potency. Blackpool average scoring nearly two goals per home game and that ratio tends to be enough to beat most sides. Blackpool have won their last three home games consecutively without conceding a goal so why a demoralised and goal-shy Crystal Palace would fare any otherwise is beyond me. Home win!

Verdict: Blackpool to win at 5/6.

Northampton Town vs Morecambe – home win at 4/5.

Northampton’s amazing run of form continues! They’ve won four consecutive games now and no matter how many times the occasional defeat breaks up their momentum, they seem to pick up right where they left off! Northampton are one of the biggest goalscoring sides in League Two and have scored nine times in their last four games. Northampton are looking every inch the League One side that they were last season and if they continue as they currently are then I expect them to be there next season too. Northampton’s home record isn’t too flattering but their form of late should be enough to see them win today.

Morecambe are a side that is hard to beat but nothing more. They’re a compact side that prefers to draw rather than risk trying to win a game which is why they’re usually lingering in mid-table. Morecambe have already lost seven times on the road this season and although their defence can be very hard to break down, it’s hard to see them holding firm against a somewhat unstoppable Northampton Town currently.

So long as Northampton score the first goal, this game really should be a home win.

Verdict: Northampton Town to win at 4/5.

Stade Rennais vs Toulouse – home win at 10/11.

Stade Rennais have now won their last two games consecutively so bring some good momentum into this game. They’re a strong home side as it is with nine wins in fourteen games and they average scoring nearly two goals per home game. Stade Rennais are a personal favourite of mine in France as I admire their talented players and potent football. They’ve claimed two valuable wins of late against difficult sides whilst keeping two clean sheets so Stade Rennais are looking good for this one.

Toulouse are a very compact defensive side that don’t lose often but their away form is their Achilles heel, if indeed they have one. They don’t concede many goals but they’ve lost their last two away games consecutively because they’re not scoring goals, both games ending 1-0. In fact, Toulouse haven’t scored more than once in a game in their last eight attempts in all competitions so their problems are easy to see. Toulouse may have lost just six times in fourteen away games but they’re looking likely to increase that number today as they face a driven and potent Stade Rennais at their fortress and frankly the odds are good enough to back them at too.

Verdict: Stade Rennais to win at 10/11.

Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Getafe – home win at evens.

I’m hoping that bias isn’t affecting my judgement here but Athletic are simply too good for Getafe, particularly at San Mames. Athletic have won eight out of twelve home games this season, including a win against Real Madrid (whilst keeping a clean sheet) and a draw with Barcelona, so they’re not to be underestimated. Laughably, it’s Bilbao’s defence that has propelled them to such a good home record, which is funny because their defence is atrocious! Naturally the goals of ‘nando Llorente have helped immensely but still – Bilbao having a strong defence is like Real Madrid not spending any money – it just doesn’t happen! Nonetheless, I love the balance in the current Bilbao squad with the ever-impressive Javi Martinez starting to boss the play from the middle of the park whilst learning from Gurpegi and Orbaiz. Susaeta is getting better each game under the guidance of experienced winger David Lopez. Toquero has changed from a headless chicken into a headless turkey but one that can find the net on occasions so is becoming more useful. Fran Yeste looks as superb as ever with his fantastic passing although injuries are starting to get the better of him these days, unfortunately. Llorente is a gifted target man and Bilbao use him very well so expect him to score today. Lastly, little Iker Muniain is going to be a star of this side for years to come if they can keep him. I hate to compare youngsters to other established players but if anyone will be the next Messi then it’s him. His ability on the ball, his fearlessness, his movement, his determination, his attitude – he’s virtually a complete product at 17 years old. He needs some experience, a bit more strength, and a more composed finish but this kid is amazing – watch him if you can!

Athetlic have won their last five home games consecutively in the Primera Liga so I expect them to continue that run today at the fortress of San Mames.

Getafe don’t travel well and have already lost nine out of thirteen away games this season. The only side with more games lost on the road is Tenerife so why the bookies give them such a good chance here is beyond me. Getafe can play football, don’t get me wrong, but they concede too readily on the road and consistently disappoint on the road too as a result. Getafe draw on their last trip to the Basque country against Osasuna in Pamplona but today they face the maestros of the Basque country and will be aware of that with three defeats from their last four visits here.

Both of these sides are remarkably similar in their ability at home and their inability on the road and that should be very much present today. Bilbao are on the rise and Getafe are somewhat stagnant currently so we should see a home win in what I expect to be a good game.

Verdict: Athletic Club de Bilbao to win at evens.

Villarreal II vs Real Union Club de Irun – home in at 4/5.

These odds just don’t make sense! They have to drop soon, surely? Villarreal II aren’t a great side despite their league placing but they are a good side. They’ve not scored many lately but they’ve played some tough sides. A 3-0 win at Rayo Vallecano de Madrid last match did much to boost their potency but it’s not like they needed it with their dominant home form and average of nearly two goals scored per home game. Villarreal II may have been promoted with Irun but they’re a class apart from the Basque side and should show it today.

Basque clubs don’t travel well and Irun are no exception. They’ve lost more away games in the Segunda Liga than any other side with ten defeats in fourteen games and that’s primarily why they’re in the relegation zone and are likely to be relegated to the Segunda B this season. They don’t score enough goals and average conceding approximately 1.5 goals per away game so Irun look set to struggle against a good Villarreal II today.

Ultimately, there’s too much between these two sides for Irun to take anything from this game barring a miraculous defensive display from the visitors and a horrendous attacking performance from the hosts so the home win at 4/5 looks good value.

Verdict: Villarreal II to win at 4/5.

Illichivets Mariupol vs Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih – home win at 11/10.

This is probably the only time I’ll back Illichivets to win this season and it’s because they’re facing one of the few sides that are actually worse than they are. Illichivets are experienced in the dogfight and it’s shown, particularly lately in their draw at home to Dynamo Kiev. Illichivets have only won three out of ten times at home this season but just four defeats here indicate how strong they can be. They don’t score enough goals but they don’t concede many either. They’ve claimed two highly respectable results consecutively with a draw at home to Dynamo Kiev and a 3-3 draw at Tavriya Simferopol so today’s hosts bring good momentum into this game as they shouldn’t really have been able to take any points from those two games.

Kryvbas look a relegated side already and with their away record, who can blame them? They’ve lost eight out of nine away games this season whilst conceding an average of two goals per away game and scoring less than a goal per every two away games. They’re nine points from safety and have lost all three games since returning from the winter break. They performed valiantly in their 1-0 defeat at Dynamo Kiev but the key word there is “defeat” – no point playing well and still losing! The biggest blow for Kryvbas will have been the 3-1 humbling at relegation battlers Chernomorets Odessa as Kryvbas led in that game only to succumb to a heavy defeat. Kryvbas will be demoralised from that defeat and shouldn’t cause many problems for hosts Illichivets today as a result.

There’s not much between these two sides but Illichivets are more experienced, decent at home, and are playing well. Kryvbas aren’t scoring goals, they’re conceding too easily, and they’re atrocious on the road, which makes the odds on the home win a gift!

Verdict: Illichivets Mariupol to win at 11/10.

Llanelli vs Rhyl – home win at 4/5.

Llanelli have beaten Rhyl here for four out of their last five meetings in all competitions. Rhyl have only scored on two of those trips whilst conceding heavily most of the time. Rhyl have only beaten Llanelli twice in their last twelve meetings at either ground so it’s easy to see who the better side is here. Llanelli have had a better campaign than their title rivals too, which shows in the fact that they’re nine points ahead of Rhyl despite having played three less games. Llanelli have won ten out of twelve home games this season and average scoring over three goals per home game so Rhyl have their work cut out today. Rhyl have disappointed me on the road this season with their haphazard record of four wins, four draws, and four defeats in twelve away games. This kind of form isn’t good enough to take points off the bigger sides as their goalscoring hasn’t been good enough on the road so they should struggle against a potent and massively in-form Llanelli today.

The gap at the top in Wales is beginning to increase as far as quality goes. Llanelli and The New Saints are starting to pull away from Rhyl and I expect this game to illustrate that perfectly. Llanelli are the better of these two sides and they’re playing better football so the odds on the home win are something of a gift – I’d have expected 4/6 on this at best!

Verdict: Llanelli to win at 4/5.
