I don’t think that Waasland-Beveren’s performance against Standard de Liege last weekend was worthy of their statistics this season. They got off to a bad start and never really recovered, which was a shame because I always associate good attitudes with this team nowadays. Still, playing in Liege is very challenging at the best of times and they were up against a superior team so perhaps I should not be too harsh on them.
Waasland-Beveren could not have hoped for a better “welcome back” opponent than Royal Excel Mouscron today either. Despite a positive start to the season, they’re now without a win in five consecutive Eerste Klasse games as they seem destined to be doomed to another relegation battle. As always, Rednic’s boys are not short of fight; they’re just short of quality. They rely too heavily on their athleticism up front and don’t have a “Plan B”. I think they’ve made one of the signings of the season by loaning Mexican Govea – he’s really given them that “X factor” in midfield – but I don’t honestly think they’re capable of winning games like this without something more than that.
I wouldn’t say that Waasland-Beveren are much better than Royal Excel Mouscron because that would be misleading. However, they’ve got more going for them at the moment despite their somewhat underwhelming display at Standard de Liege and I am optimistic that’ll make the difference here. Only RSC Anderlecht have avoided defeat here over Waasland-Beveren’s last four home games and even well-organised Antwerp have been put to the sword so I believe Royal Excel Mouscron are in trouble today.
What I find interesting is that there should be more to come from Waasland-Beveren too, at least in attack. I quite like Ronnie Schwartz, for example, but he’s barely had a look in this season. Imagine how good they could be if he was paired with in-form Kiese-Thelin up front! They’ve got a good balance in their midfield and a brilliant creator in Morioka, who is arguably in the best form of his career. They’ve got a lot to offer, Waasland-Beveren, and not many home games go by without them showcasing it. Therefore, if they turn up today, then I expect them to prove why Royal Excel Mouscron will be in the relegation battle this season.
To me, there’s value in taking Waasland-Beveren to clear the -1 Asian Handicap here.
Verdict: Waasland-Beveren to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 26/25.
