Although their Paulista campaign didn’t end as they’d have liked, Santos were in the toughest group of the lot so finishing as they did isn’t that bad really, so I would not read much into such.
Indeed, when comparing Santos to other Serie A teams, I think that they’ve done the better business this season. It’s one thing to have one of the best academies in Brazil that constantly produces players that can compete for a first-team place, but it’s another thing entirely to attract players to the club because of its standing within South American football. That’s why Gabriel Barbosa is already back, albeit on loan. He’s too good for this level, even with a poor attitude, and new signing Sasha has settled in well too. Vecchio is like a new signing because he didn’t play much last season and with plenty of old hands to steer the more talented/younger players of Santos, I think that they’ve got a good chance of faring well in the forthcoming campaign. They play good football, Santos, and that’s especially evident in their home games. They’ve got a bit of everything and a lot of cohesion. I don’t see any reason to doubt that proving to be the case against newly-promoted Ceara today, particularly after so much match practice in the Paulista.
Ceara made a couple of handy signings, the most noteworthy of which is Colombian attacking midfielder Reina, but generally look rather lightweight for a Serie A team. Admittedly, the gap between Serie A and Serie B really isn’t that large nowadays but it’s in games of this nature where it is apparent. The visitors may have one of the brightest sparks around at the moment in forward Arthur and a few old hands in their ranks but with Reina and Ken having barely kicked a ball for Ceara in 2018, I’m finding it hard to believe that they’ll have what it takes to upset Santos on the road tonight.
Santos don’t always do things the easy way, hence the -1 Asian Handicap instead of the -1.5 Asian Handicap, but this is a game I expect them to win by two goals or more.
Verdict: Santos to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at evens.
