Today’s free tip is in the Hungarian Liga 1 encounter between Varda SE and Szombathelyi Haladas.
Although I was initially sceptical of Varda SE’s decision to sack their manager after just a handful of Liga 1 games, the brutal truth is that they’ve looked much better since Dajka took over. Admittedly, they couldn’t really have gotten any worse but they look more motivated and confident now, which helps.
Don’t read too much into that, though – they’re still the worst side in Hungary’s Liga 1, even with that bit more motivation. Their results have picked up lately because they’ve wanted it more than they did earlier in the season. They claimed a really good win at MTK Budapest last time out, too, and their hosts on that occasion have been one of Hungary’s success stories of the current campaign.
There’s nothing very special about Varda SE but their best players are starting to perform better, and that’s absolutely crucial if they intend on staying up. I also find it to be necessary that they beat Szombathelyi Haladas today if they want to stay up, too – this is something of a relegation six-pointer. Enough is going their way for them to manage it but will they? Time will tell.
Personally, I think that Szombathelyi Haladas have a bit too much street smarts to lose this one. We’re talking about a team that can call upon Priskin or Meszaros or Halmosi or Rabusic, you know? Players that would walk into Varda SE’s squad, no questions asked. Yes, they look a bit poor at the back but their attack is strong, and they know no fear. They shouldn’t fear Varda SE anyway; the visitors are the better side here.
Still, Szombathelyi Haladas like to make life hard for themselves, and conceding here is likely to happen with the way things have gone for both teams of late. That makes me rather disinterested in the 1×2 market because it really could go either way. I like the idea of goals, however. I stand by what I said earlier – this is a really important game for both teams, and a draw isn’t ideal for either of them. Therefore, I’m going to roll with both teams to score at 4/5, which really should happen.
Verdict: Both teams to score at 4/5.
