Earlier in the season, AIK Solna beat local rivals Hammarby 1-0. They did a perfect job on them in that game by sitting back, soaking up the pressure, and hitting them on the break. They eventually got a deserved penalty, took the lead, and held it brilliantly.

That’s not where the story ends, though. After the game, some of the Hammarby players came out and accused AIK Solna of playing “anti-football” and why they did that, I don’t know. It showed that AIK Solna’s style got to them, and it also gives the league leaders the advantage in today’s game because they know how to rile Hammarby up. I thought it was a really embarrassing moment for Hammarby, and I think it’ll cost them today here.

Of course, these two teams do play contrasting styles. AIK Solna are good enough to sit on any lead that they take. Hammarby have to outscore teams because they know that they’ll concede, and it’s hard to envision that approach working against the best defence in Sweden. Ultimately, as much as the footballing romantics would love to believe that Hammarby would win such encounters, I believe that AIK Solna will be comfortable here. It’s about being effective and efficient, which AIK Solna are – that’s why they’re top of the table. Hammarby are fun to watch but they’re top-heavy; that defence couldn’t keep a cow out, as they amply demonstrated in a recent derby defeat against Djurgarden.

AIK Solna are happy to let Hammarby have the ball because they know that they are very unlikely to break through a wall containing Sundgren, Milosevic, Karlsson etc. particularly with Adu in front of them. It’s not impossible, of course, but it’s difficult at Allsvenskan level. Furthermore, AIK Solna know that they’ll get opportunities against Hammarby because the visitors are sloppy at the back and commit too many men forward. When Goitom, Olsson, Elyounoussi, and Stefanelli are attacking Hammarby, they’re going to score goals. Ultimately, I expect AIK Solna’s balance and consistency to be too much for Hammarby here.

Don’t get me wrong here, guys and girls – I love entertaining football as much as the next man. I wish it was prevalent in European leagues nowadays but it’s about results. That’s why Hammarby, who haven’t changed their style in years, have been relegated more than they’ve won trophies over the past decade. They cannot keep teams out. They cannot control a game. All they can do is move forward, get in behind defenders, and score goals.

Hammarby are good at playing that way, to be fair – any Swedish team that takes them on in an open game is definitively insane because Hammarby have the speed and quality to kill teams via Tankovic, Durdic, and Hamad. AIK Solna won’t do that though, which makes Hammarby a lot less effective. Basically, I can see them being “managed” out of this match with the proviso that AIK Solna don’t have anybody unnecessarily sent off.

Derby or not, I find there to be value in the home win at evens.

Verdict: AIK Solna to win at evens.
