Today’s free tip is in the Swedish Allsvenskan game between newly-promoted Dalkurd and league leaders AIK Solna.

Despite not being all that streetwise, nor laden with proven Allsvenskan talents, I think that Dalkurd have done brilliantly this season. They’ve been a breath of fresh air in the Allsvenskan with their almost Spanish style of playing football. They way they move the ball around with speed combined with the good movement of their attackers has made them a constant threat to most teams, and with better finishing, they’d be far higher in the table.

Indeed, I don’t honestly remember the last time a newly-promoted team had so many players plundered in the first transfer window of the season. Dalkurd lost star striker Turay to Sint-Truiden, Rashidi to AIK Solna themselves, Sugita to Tractor Sazi, Bertilsson to Orebro, Amin to Ostersunds FK, and Berg to GIF Sundsvall. Most of those players were regulars so Dalkurd really have been kicked in the balls this season. It’s one thing to adapt to a higher league, but it’s another thing entirely to rebuild a squad whilst in the midst of the said campaign. Unsurprisingly, they’re struggling.

Still, it’s not dampened their desire to play attractive attacking football. They have signed some decent players in response to those that they’ve lost but I think the acquisition of Finnish striker Markkanen alone indicates that they’re suffering without a “Plan B”, hence the new long ball option they’ve given themselves. Markkanen is no stranger to AIK Solna, though – he was on their books too. I just don’t feel like Dalkurd are in any kind of position to suddenly start springing surprises on the best team in Sweden right now.

I mean, we’re nearing the end of the Allsvenskan campaign now. Dalkurd are starting to tire because they don’t have a big squad and their style requires a lot of energy. This is a team that already ships a lot of goals so their obvious fatigue is causing them to concede even more goals than usual. Without Turay up front, they lack natural speed and a good level of finesse so they’re struggling to convert most of their chances, and they do create a lot of them. Sadly, there’s just too much wrong with plucky Dalkurd at this time, so although I fervently hope they survive an immediate drop back into the Superettan, I cannot see how they realistically stand a chance against a far superior AIK Solna.

The capital club simply have everything, at least when it comes to Allsvenskan level. They can play open football, organised football, score goals from most scenarios, and hold leads. That’s why they’re going to win the title this season; they’re ruthlessly efficient. There simply isn’t a weak spot in their team. When they’ve got experienced match-winners like Goitom, Larsson, Elyounoussi, and Milosevic in important areas as well as extremely talented younger players like Olsson and Rashidi, not to mention a lot of very consistent performers, it’s beyond challenging to find a good time to oppose them at this level. They handle most challenges brilliantly, and they know how to win games. Beating Dalkurd should be one of their lesser challenges, tactically speaking. It’s easy to anticipate what they’re going to do. The hard part will be the physical side of things because keeping up with them is a bit grim but AIK Solna will do it, I am sure.

I would not be surprised if AIK Solna adopted their “Hammarby” approach to this game because that’s what they’ve done against their neighbours and GIF Sundsvall this season, all of which play very similar styles to Dalkurd. Now, AIK Solna won most of those games 1-0, which is the danger here. However, I don’t see that happening against Dalkurd because of how ridiculously easy it is to score against them. I remember watching the reversal of this fixture earlier in the season, and AIK Solna spurned lots of good chances at the end of the game to score more goals. They look a lot sharper at the moment though, and Dalkurd are not the kind of team to simply sit back and accept a narrow loss as an acceptable result. In practice, that means, they’re going to keep trying to get at AIK Solna, particularly as relegation awaits them if they don’t pick up points on a more regular basis.

Therefore, I’m left feeling like AIK Solna will take the lead at some stage, and then will finish the job off on the break, which is why I am backing the visitors to beat the -1.5 Asian Handicap here.

Verdict: AIK Solna to beat the -1.5 Asian Handicap at 107/100.
