Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Holstein Kiel and Ingolstadt.
I wasn’t expecting Holstein Kiel to have enough to do what they did in the DFB Pokal earlier this week. However, the absence of Sallai hurt SC Freiburg too much and Holstein Kiel beat them down via their tenacity and confidence. Fair play to Holstein Kiel – that’s what makes them so hard to handle. I will continue to oppose them in tough games where they’re missing Seydel, though – he’s their unplayable star. He’s out today too.
Happily, Ingolstadt are not near SC Freiburg’s level, and I don’t rate SC Freiburg all that highly to begin with! Ingolstadt have the potential to be a good Bundesliga 2 team but they’re just not one, to be frank. Mentally, I think the Bavarians are too weak to be one. They’ve got some very good players, particularly in attack, but this Ingolstadt side do not operate as a unit. They give in too easily, particularly under pressure, and they give goals away too easily. When they fall behind, they look to be out of games, and that’s not the attitude I expect to see from a Bavarian team. That’s where Ingolstadt are at, though, and that’s why they’re going to be in a relegation battle unless they’re very careful.
Now, even without Seydel, Holstein Kiel are too good for Ingolstadt. It’s not that they’re a lot better – I don’t see there being that much in it, actually – but more that their style is what Ingolstadt detest playing against. Holstein Kiel press high, they attack as a unit, and they’re completely unafraid of their opponents. They’re fast, confident, and utterly lethal if not dealt with properly. Their biggest weakness is their almost complete inability to defend but unless their opponents can push on that button, they’re not going to struggle – and I don’t believe Ingolstadt are smart enough to do that right now.
Therefore, I trust in the home win here.
Verdict: Holstein Kiel to win at 4/5.
