Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Union Berlin and Greuther Furth.
Defensively speaking, Union Berlin are the best in the Bundesliga 2, in my opinion. On their day, SV Sandhausen can give them a run for their money but Union Berlin have the best organisation, the best protection from midfield, and the best organisation. That won’t change today.
However, the sacrifice for being so good at the back is that they’re quite weak in attack. They’re not so great at taking their chances, which is why they draw so many games. I can’t take anything away from boss Fischer because to keep teams out so consistently at this level virtually requires a knighthood, as the Bundesliga 2 is a very attacking division. Are they an efficient team, though? In a word – no.
A new problem greets profligate Union Berlin today though, with key midfielder Promel absent through suspension. He helps them control games so his absence is significant. I don’t think it’ll impact their defensive setup too badly as that’s more about Fischer than about any of their individuals. However, I do think it’ll affect the confidence of the team when they’re attacking, and that should make it even harder for Union Berlin to find the net, particularly as they’re facing feisty Greuther Furth.
The visitors aren’t as organised as Union Berlin but they do fight as hard as they do. They’ve got more to call upon in attack too, not that we’ve seen the best of them in that field just yet. Keita-Ruel is the only one who has shone for them in attack this season but you know that Atanga and Green have so much more to offer than they’ve shown since joining today’s visitors.
Still, I love the flexibility of Greuther Furth. They can compete well in open and attacking games, but they can also function well when they need to go defensive. Much like their hosts, I wouldn’t say that they’re especially efficient but they’re certainly adept at making life uncomfortable for their opponents. That’s why they seldom lose games, in a nutshell. There aren’t many teams that are mentally stronger than Greuther Furth, at least not at Bundesliga 2 level.
I don’t believe that the visitors have enough about them to break through the Union Berlin wall today though. It’s not easy to do, and their hosts have incredible patience and organisation. However, I do believe that they’re annoying enough to get a draw from the game if they play to their maximum because they can contain their cautious hosts. Whichever way it goes, I fancy the game to go under 2.5 goals, hence the tip.
Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 4/5.
