Today’s free tip is in the Australian A-League encounter between Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United.

This is Newcastle Jets’ fourth game in twelve days. During that time, they’ve not only faced extra-time against Persija Jakarta but also had to fly to Japan just a few days ago to get pounded by Kashima Antlers in their Asian Champions League qualifier. Interestingly enough, boss Merrick opted to rest most of his starters when hosting Melbourne City and yet they still managed to beat the most dreary team in the A-League 3-1, which says a lot more about Melbourne City than it does about Newcastle Jets. Merrick hasn’t specified any changes here other than the enforced one, which is that Venezuelan playmaker Vargas is injured so he cannot play. He’s daft if he doesn’t rotate, though – these players cannot play so many games in such a short space of time.

Let’s suppose Merrick doesn’t rotate today though. Let’s suppose he names his strongest side possible. What then? Well, there’s a team out there that works hard and is tactically astute. Newcastle Jets is seldom outplayed in the A-League. However, they’re outscored a lot more often than they should be, all things considered. This is because they make far too many individual errors at both ends of the pitch, leading to shipping too many goals and not scoring enough. Newcastle Jets is good to watch, that’s for sure, but not efficient in the least. Therefore, a game against a tough opponent like Adelaide United after a lot of travelling looks a bit too much for them, in my opinion, especially without Vargas.

Adelaide United suffer from similar problems to Newcastle Jets but generally control games better than their opponents. Dutch forward Thomassen still needs time to adjust because he’s been more of a hindrance than a help of late. Still, he’s exactly what their fans have been crying out for so once he aligns with the team, Adelaide United should be a lot better for it. I like The Reds because of their consistently impressive displays and never-say-die attitudes. They move the ball around well, threaten regularly, and seldom look out of their depth. Defensively, they do concern me, even though Jakobsen has finally settled in. Offensively, though, it’s opposing teams that they trouble the most!

Last weekend, Adelaide United kept getting hit with sucker punches against Western Sydney Wanderers – that’s why they lost. At no stage did Western Sydney Wanderers look like they were in the match but one set piece at the start and two breaks late on decided the outcome. Adelaide United is usually sharp enough to handle teams like that but not on that day. With the likes of winger Goodwin, Danish drifter Ilso, and returning forward Blackwood in attack though, Adelaide United could and should cause problems today. The absence of both Halloran and Mileusnic does leave more at Goodwin’s door than I’d like, admittedly, but this team controls games so well that it shouldn’t really matter, not when you factor in how many mistakes Newcastle Jets tend to make in defence and the likely rotation they’ll have to enforce today. Realistically speaking, Adelaide United should control this game and if they do, they can win it.

Ultimately, I don’t see The Reds screwing this one up. A draw is possible, I suppose, but I find value in backing the away win with draw no bet cover.

Verdict: Adelaide United to win with draw no bet at 4/5.
