Today’s free tip is in the Norwegian Eliteserien encounter between Viking Stavanger and Stromsgodset.

Everybody is climbing aboard the Stromsgodset train and I get it; they’ve been very good lately, even when they’ve not won. Now that they’ve won against Valerenga Oslo, the expectation is that Stromsgodset will win again, and it’s reasonable to place your faith in such.

However, I won’t be doing that. I don’t like backing Stromsgodset on the road at the best of times, largely because they usually end up on normal turf rather than artificial turf. I’m not going to start doing so just because they’re scoring goals. Stromsgodset always score goals; that’s what they’re good at. It doesn’t negate them being awful at defending, though, something which has been the case for decades. There has to be a good reason for me to believe Stromsgodset will outscore Viking Stavanger today, and I simply don’t have a good enough reason to do so.

I do think that the visitors have improved immeasurably in attack since acquiring Mawa, though. He’s brought power, energy, stamina, and belief to the team, and is forcing those alongside him to keep up in order to stop themselves from being embarrassed. He’s a relative novice at this level, Mawa, but he’s outshining more experienced Eliteserien players like Keita, Abdellaoue, and Pellegrino with his infectious displays. It’s a good though, though – everybody is getting on board, closing down defenders with a high press, and trying different things around the box to get in on goal. It’s lovely to see Stromsgodset heading in the right direction, basically. They’re a lot better than the Eliteserien table would have you believe they are, and it’s about time they started showing it. I don’t doubt that they’ll pick up plenty of points between now and the end of the season but I believe most of them will be at home.

You see, Stromsgodset have had to bag three goals to win games in the Eliteserien this season. They’ve not won a game unless they’ve scored three times. Just let that sink in if you’re considering backing the visitors here. Yes, they’re capable of doing so but when a team concedes two goals as readily as Stromsgodset do, it’s hard to trust them to win games – and I don’t trust them against Viking Stavanger today.

I do think Stromsgodset are better than Viking Stavanger but the home team have got some good players. Hoiland is a very experienced forward, for example, and support coming from Tripic, Bytyqi, Torsteinbo, Fridjonsson, and especially hot prospect Thorstvedt ensures that Viking Stavanger do create chances on a regular basis. They’ve also added young Finnish attacker Kallman to their ranks lately, which I like. He brings great determination and a good level of speed to their attack, even if just from the bench. Ibrahimaj has been doing well lately too. This isn’t a side to take lightly, basically.

Still, following their promotion, Viking Stavanger’s defence remained at a similar level so they struggle to keep teams out. Tactically, they’re relatively good but individually, they do give away more than they should at the back. That could prove pivotal tonight too. Their togetherness and effectiveness as a whole is rather good though. They look a bit more rounded than Stromsgodset, and given that it’s taken seriously good displays from seriously good teams to actually beat Viking at home this season, I’m inclined to believe that the visitors won’t win this one.

Rather than get drawn into an unappealing 1×2 market, though, I’d much rather back over 3 goals at 97/100.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 97/100.
