Today’s free tip is in the Finnish Veikkausliiga encounter between HIFK and KPV.
The odds are dropping on the HIFK win, which is intriguing. I cannot deny that the capital club are better than newly-promoted KPV, nor that they’re more likely to win the match, but with little motivation to do so, what’s the point in trusting them? HIFK could win their next five games 10-0 and it won’t make an ounce of difference to their campaign. I wouldn’t call that a failure, per se, as they’ve avoided the drop. Seeing who they brought in though, I think they’ll be a tad disappointed that they didn’t sneak sixth spot, particularly when you consider how poor SJK were – again.
So, yeah – despite HIFK being the better team with better individuals, there’s no motivation for them here. Are they really going to have enough interest to deal with this tenacious, desperate KPV side? I doubt it. They’ve defended terribly of late, HIFK, and there’s no real sense in them improving things now. They’re not going to get relegated so they may as well have a go. For what it’s worth, I do think that they’ll score. They should be pretty embarrassed if they don’t, really – KPV look out of their depth at this level. They’ve got some talented kids in their attack, HIFK, as well as huge striker Tukiainen and a couple of good creators too. I think HIFK assembled a good squad this season, for what it’s worth, but it’s not changed all that much.
Can HIFK win this game? Of course they can. Should they win this game? Absolutely! Will they win it? I doubt it. KPV are going to want this a lot more than HIFK, and the signs of such were there throughout the last few rounds of Veikkausliiga football. KPV aren’t good enough for this level but they’re doing all they can to survive, and they have found a peach of a poacher in Ghana’s Yartey. Because of his speed and finesse, it doesn’t really matter if KPV are in games or not because he’s always a threat on the break, even if he’s alone. He’s been a great find and make no mistake about it; if they stay up, it’ll be because of him.
I really can’t fault the work-rate of KPV, nor their belief. They just keep on plugging away, no matter what the circumstances. The fact that they beat HJK and ran Inter Turku close speaks volumes for just how much effort KPV put in, not to mention their mental strength, because KPV were completely outplayed in both matches. They’ve got some quality in the final third that has slipped by unnoticed though, and I am not solely talking about Yartey, although he plays a substantial part! No, I’m talking about German midfield controller Helmke and playmaker Mannstrom, both of which are very good at passing. It’s not shown much until lately because KPV’s attackers are awful, barring the afore-mentioned. Now they’ve got a good man leading the line, KPV are actually carving out a few good opportunities per match, even though they’re not properly in the games themselves. That might not be enough to pick them up points but it gives them a fighting chance of doing so, and I refuse to believe that HIFK have enough focus and drive at the moment to prepare to deal with such.
With the above in mind, I’m going to overlook the 1×2 market and back both teams to score in what should be a surprisingly entertaining game.
Verdict: Both teams to score at 19/20.
