Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Jahn Regensburg and Hamburger SV.
I shouldn’t laugh, but I still do. I have nothing against Hamburger SV but how the hell they can fall apart, year after year, is absolutely beyond me. It’s incredible. They start the season amazingly, are usually top (or near enough to it) at Christmas, and then completely fall apart at the business end of a campaign.
This is one of the few instances where I actually feel quite sorry for the board, you know? It’s not like Hamburger SV have approached the Bundesliga 2 casually. No, they’ve been very bold on a number of occasions now, happy to try out new approaches in a bid to return to the Bundesliga. I really can’t fault them on that front; they’ve done everything that conceivably can to return this club to where they belong. However, the squad has always been too mentally weak – and so is this one. I know that the German media don’t help; they’re just as bad as the English media in that regard. It’s all down to their players though, and they simply do not have the bottle for a promotion race.
We’re now at a point where catching Bochum is pretty much impossible for Hamburger SV. I honestly think that catching Greuther Furth is beyond them too; they’re too strong mentally, and they work too hard for Hamburger SV to get near them. I still think that Holstein Kiel and Heidenheim can have a say on the promotion race so I would not bank on Greuther Furth being promoted just yet – but Bochum are as good as there. For me, Hamburger SV have to now play for third place – and that seldom works out well for them.
You know what’s been weird about Hamburger SV in 2021 though? They’ve actually done well in tough games; far moreso than when facing lesser teams. My personal belief is that is because lesser teams want it more at this stage of the season whereas promotion battlers tend to have more of an ‘ease’ about them at this stage. Hamburger SV can’t deal with teams that rush them, and I say that despite being comfortably aware that they have the best squad in the division. Lately, it’s been Darmstadt 98 and SV Sandhausen (not for the first time, either!!) that have derailed them, and neither team had to do a lot to make it happen either.
What really kills Hamburger SV at times like these is that they’ve got no idea how to consistently play on the front foot. They know how to win matches via game phases, but not dominate them. Subsequently, when falling behind at times like these, their solution is to send everybody forward. I admire the bravery and desire at that point, but this team will always, always concede goals when they do it that way. Darmstadt 98 and SV Sandhausen may have beaten them lately, but the scoreline doesn’t really reflect how many chances both teams wasted in those games – almost all of which were created when Hamburger SV were pushing.
Now, I think Hamburger SV are quite lucky today because the Jahn Regensburg campaign is mostly over. Their DFB Pokal dream is over, and relegation shouldn’t really happen, not with their game(s) in hand in mind. However, I also think that they’re going to start shitting themselves very soon because both Braunschweig and Sandhausen are suddenly playing a lot better, and they look stronger mentally too, not to mention more effective in the final third. I couldn’t possibly say if that’ll result in Regensburg showing up today or not, but I’d like to think it would because they know that Hamburger SV have to come at them, and all German teams create against them when that happens.
Hamburger SV are obviously the better team, and they realistically should win the game. You’re a far braver person than I am if you trust them to win a game at this stage of the season though. They’ve got no balls for such times. They’ve still got a deadly attack, and they should be able to prove it against a fairly predictable Regensburg side that are missing a few important midfielders, but they simply give too many chances away when they’re in this mode. Even Regensburg should not spurn an opportunity to pick potentially invaluable points up against visiting bottlers.
Therefore, I’m happy to back over 2.5 goals here whilst being openly curious as to which team will leave this game with anything useful.
Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
