Today’s free game is in the Turkish Super Lig encounter between Genclerbirligi and Goztepe.
The odds on this selection seem rather long, don’t they? Genclerbirligi literally need to win both of their two remaining Super Lig matches or they’re relegated. They’ve got to attack Goztepe tonight, and as any Super Lig fan will tell you, Goztepe play some very good attacking football. It’s not wise to attack them, in other words – but there’s no alternative for the capital club.
I think it’s more than fair to say that Genclerbirligi have been atrocious defensively for the majority of this season, if not the entirety. They’ve actually given up on defending now; it was more than evident against a wholly disinterested, demotivated Faith Karagumruk last time out. Genclerbirligi lost that game 5-1 because they invited the wolves to dinner in that game, time and time again, and were duly routed. Faith Karagumruk didn’t suddenly produce the display of the season; it was all of Genclerbirligi’s making. Why would tonight’s game against a better, more interested Goztepe be any different?
I know that they need to win, but honestly, this team is completely incapable of sitting on a lead – so they don’t. They have to keep attacking, keep scoring, and pray that they score enough to outscore their opponents. With Stancu back up front, and Candeias, Yilmaz, and da Motta supporting, they will score goals. Even against Goztepe, I believe that they can do enough to win the game. I just think it’s going to be really tough because they’re playing a style against Goztepe that even the Istanbul heavyweights would not play, and there’s a damn good reason that they don’t. In short, Genclerbirligi are in trouble – but they’ve got to keep trucking.
Technically, Goztepe have nothing left to play for but one thing I’ve noticed about this team this season is their desire to play good attacking football. In fact, it’s been around for years now, this desire of theirs. It may not always work out for them, but it’s what they want, and it’s what they work hard to manage. I appreciate that Ideye and Napoleoni have disappointed this season, but bringing Jahovic back and sticking him in attack with support from N’Diaye and Diabate is a potentially lethal combination in the long run, especially with Aydogdu and Akbunar behind them.
Candeias being out for the home team isn’t ideal, but considering that Goztepe are without half of their back four, I can see this game quickly becoming very open and goal-filled. I just can’t see how it would go any other way. I’m staggered that I can somehow get over 2.5 goals at 4/5 on any Genclerbirligi game, to be honest – it’s always a smart move for their matches. For such an important game, I’d honestly be tempted by more goals than this, which is why I’ve listed a side bet beneath my main pick.
Main bet: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
Side bet: Over 4.5 goals at 5/1.
