Today’s free tip is in the Norwegian Eliteserien encounter between Bodo/Glimt and Odd.

Blind handicapping Bodo/Glimt is either bold or stupid, measured only by the success of the pick. It’s not a team you can trust to keep opponents out; they don’t try to, and they’re not good at it when they do. However, they are a ruthless attacking team that will not let up on their opponents, so in the right game, handicapping them is the right call.

Ordinarily, handicapping them against Odd is not something I’d do. Odd are usually quite solid defensively, and like to counter well. That’s not stopped Bodo/Glimt from turning them over in the past, admittedly, but it’s been harder for them to do. This season though, Odd found Bakenga on their books, and he’s been dazzling the Eliteserien with goal after goal. That’s encouraged Odd to get forward more, especially as they’ve got Rolantsson and Svendsen in attack too, and has led to Odd scoring lots, and winning a fair amount too.

Naturally, Bakenga’s displays at a club he’s too good for attracted attention, and now he’s buggered off to the Middle East to earn big bucks; good for him. That’s left Odd in a quandary though, one that beating Haugesund 4-2 doesn’t really pave over the cracks off. They’ve lost two games since that win, smashed 5-0 by Rosenborg BK in Trondheim, and more worryingly losing 1-0 at home against Stromsgodset, who cannot defend at any time. Their goal threat is nowhere near what it was, and although I really don’t doubt Rolantsson and Svendsen coming good in time (both have proven so in the past at this level), they’re not there yet – and Odd are still playing attacking football.

Odd attacking a lot and not scoring enough is a problem because they will concede a lot by playing that way. Containing Bodo/Glimt at Eliteserien level is hard enough because few teams (if any) can play the one touch passing game that they do, nor break with such furious pace. It’s not as good a Bodo/Glimt side as the last two years, but Knutsen will get them there in the end, as he always does. I think their recent transfer signings have proven that, bringing Pellegrino home from his stint in the Middle East to the league he dominated with Kristiansund, and ex-Brann Bergen forward Koomson back from his sojourn in Turkey with Kasimpasa, both of which weigh in heavily on Bodo/Glimt’s attacking power.

Pellegrino has already bagged four goals in two games since returning to Norway, and if pre-season recruit Pernambuco doesn’t get going soon, there won’t be enough room for him in this squad. Botheim’s still scoring goals, Solbakken is scoring goals, and the likes of Saltnes and Berg are never far away from such, so where would the Brazilian even fit? This has become a ferociously strong attacking force once more, and one that is not afraid to show it. They’ll be keen to deal with Odd early on as to make any changes necessary in anticipation of their European encounter against Zorya Lugansk of Ukraine midweek, so I expect a fast start and lots of Bodo/Glimt goals.

I may not trust in a Bodo/Glimt clean sheet, but they should hit a Bakenga-less Odd hard enough to convincingly win.

Verdict: Bodo/Glimt to beat the -1.5 Asian Handicap at 22/25.
