Today’s featured game is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Dynamo Dresden and Werder Bremen.

It’s three defeats on the spin for Dynamo Dresden now. They’ve tried to break them up by playing in friendlies in between Bundesliga 2 matches, but it’s not helped. They’re just not a very good side anymore, contrary to their positive start to life in Bundesliga 2 again.

They’ve had some hard games, the eastern German outfit, but they’ve not performed well in any of them anyway. It’s quickly become apparent that the team simply doesn’t have a goal-scorer, that their creativity is sporadic at best, and that their manager is too cautious for a limited outfit to survive. Target man Daferner is the closest they’ve got to a goal-scorer but without service, he’s redundant. A good team should not struggle to shut Dynamo Dresden down, in other words, home or away.

Unfortunately for them, not many at this level are better than Werder Bremen. The visitors did make some unfavourable pre-season changes in order to balance the books, but they look alright right now. They’ll be fuming after their derby defeat against Hamburger SV, but in general I think they’ve looked good. Ducksch has settled in really up front, and Assale is too good for this level, which he’ll show time and time again if he stays fit. We’re yet to see anything close to Fullkrug’s best too, so this team will score goals this season, particularly when Bittencourt is back from injury.

What’s impressed me the most about them is how well they’ve dominated games though. I mean, they embarrassed Ingolstadt in their last win. You can point out that Ingolstadt are crap, if you like – not true – but they’ve been in every single game. They’ve just not had luck on their side. Against Bremen though, they were played off the park; it was a massacre. I’m not prepared to suddenly lose faith in what Bremen are doing because of one derby defeat either. I think they’ve settled their newbies in quickly, that they look hungry, and that they look very dangerous.

Against a defensive Dynamo Dresden, the visitors should have things their own way. Penetrating them will be the big ask but Schmid and Schmidt have done enough to convince me that they can be trusted here. Bremen’s emphasis on possession is setting them apart this season too; teams often end up chasing shadows. Therefore, even with Toprak out – again – I still think it makes sense to back Bremen to win here, even though Dynamo Dresden usually do attract a good crowd for home games.

Truthfully, this isn’t what I’d call a ‘fair’ game. Dynamo Dresden are going to battle against relegation this season because unlike fellow newly-promoted outfit Hansa Rostock, they’ve still got a squad that belongs in the division below. They may have sprung a few surprises at the start of the season against teams that hadn’t settled properly yet, but now everybody has settled, we’re beginning to see the real Dynamo Dresden – and it’s not impressive. I can see them getting out-passed here, and if they do, then they’re sitting ducks because Bremen should find a way through in the end.

For me, everything points to an away win here.

Verdict: Werder Bremen to win at 21/20.
