Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Paderborn 07 and Ingolstadt.

Last week’s win against Karlsruher SC was a good one for Paderborn 07. Unfortunately though, it’s just yet another in the long list of inconsistent results. This team has the players to be in the promotion battle but until they can string a few wins together, they’re not going to get close to a Bundesliga return.

Still, today’s match represents an opportunity for them to do so. Not just an opportunity, but a good one because they’re hosting Ingolstadt, who already look relegated. It’s hard to see them in this position when they’ve given as much as they unquestionably have this season. However, the Bavarians are simply out of their depth in the Bundesliga 2. All their mistakes are big ones, and usually get punished. Their finishing isn’t good enough for this level.

Therefore, it’s a big ‘advantage Paderborn 07’ moment, this fixture. I don’t trust the home team because they have a real penchant for doing stupid things in defence. Even last week, when 4-0 up against a knackered Karlsruher SC, they managed to concede two goals. That back four of theirs lacks chemistry, and it also lacks protection from midfield. In short, I doubt there’s another team in the division I’d handicap Paderborn 07 against right now other than Ingolstadt.

However, the home team have a lethal attack, and that’s why I am going to trust them here. Any follower of the Bundesliga 2 knows how good Michel is; he’s a phenomenon at this level. This season he’s actually outdone himself, really carrying the team at key periods, whether against eleven or ten men. He was outstanding last weekend, and he will be again today. His runs, awareness, finishing – everything about this fella is sheer perfection at this level. With him in the eleven, Srbeny, Platte, Proger etc. all benefit hugely.

I don’t see a way in which Ingolstadt can contain their hosts here. They’re not good enough defensively to manage it, and far better teams than them have conceded against Paderborn 07 this season. They’ve already changed manager once this season, the Bavarians, appointing Schubert as manager in September. How long before he gets sacked too? They can’t have very realistic expectations if they get promoted to the Bundesliga 2, don’t make anywhere near enough good signings (yes, it is possible – see Hansa Rostock’s business by comparison), and then sack their manager after two months. Schubert hasn’t turned things around because the team just isn’t good enough; it’s that simple.

Alright, I’ll concede that certain individuals have let Ingolstadt down like Boujellab, who has not performed anywhere close to his potential. I’ll also concede that they’ve encountered more injury problems than most this season. Even with all of their players fit though, I don’t see an eleven that can avoid the drop in a highly competitive Bundesliga 2 team. I don’t doubt the team’s battling spirit, nor their utter conviction of a positive result. Their effectiveness and efficiency is simply not there for this level though, and that’s a huge problem.

Paderborn 07 may be sketchy, but they at least have the individuals to carry them during difficult periods. Ingolstadt do not have that luxury, and they don’t have any recent experience of beating the drop. As I recall, they were relegated from this division a few years back in a play-off against Wehen Wiesbaden. Despite winning the away leg convincingly, they became awfully blase in the return leg and were humped to relegation. They may have a more steely resolve about them now, Ingolstadt, but they’re equipped with a far worse team than the last time relegation stared them in the face. I fear for them.

As far as today goes, Paderborn 07 really should score two or three goals, hence my interest in the -1 Asian Handicap.

Verdict: Paderborn 07 to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 4/5.
