Today’s free tip is in the Dutch Eredivisie encounter between Feyenoord Rotterdam and AZ Alkmaar.
These two teams live and breathe attacking football in true Eredivisie fashion. Over the years, Feyenoord have dropped off the leading pack, and are now at a very similar level to AZ in general. They’re a more prestigious club with a more revered history of bringing through talented youngsters. They also boast a very intimidating home stadium. On the pitch though, there’s little between the two teams, despite AZ’s slow start to the season, and I would not advise that anybody get involved with the 1×2 market for that reason.
Backing goals makes sense though. Neither team fears the other right now. Feyenoord have mustered a few wins in a row, and AZ have a similar record. Indeed, AZ have a very strong head-to-head record versus Feyenoord in recent years, and I’d still give them the slight edge now, even after losing Stengs, Koopmeiners etc. pre-season. AZ simply look a more determined unit than their hosts, although as I said above, it did take a while for them to get going.
Both of these two outfits embrace true Eredivisie football, and that means that they go at one another and try to score more goals. Defending is not something that either of them do well, and nor do they pretend to. Feyenoord focus on being superior in transitions, and AZ focus on retaining and using the ball better. Everything is very attacking and progressive in general, and that tends to lead to them scoring plenty of goals.
Feyenoord and AZ do not look comfortable defending though. It doesn’t take much to score against them; it’s having the stamina and determination to outlast and outscore them that other Eredivisie outfits find tough. Both teams played midweek so we may see some rotation, but both will want to make an impression in such a tough fixture. Feyenoord need to try and close the gap at the team whilst they keep their title delusions alive, and AZ need to keep winning just to get back to the right end of the table.
Barring a touch of fatigue, trusting in goals here makes complete sense to me. I wouldn’t be brave enough to call a winner in a game that could go either way, but backing over 3 Asian goals at 49/50 is very much on my agenda.
Verdict: Over 3 Asian goals at 49/50.
