Today’s secondary featured game is the Irish Premier League game in Dublin between Bohemians and Drogheda United. Both sides started the campaign with completely opposite goals but it’s today’s hosts that are failing to live up to their expectations so far this season with Drogheda just managing to keep their heads above water.

Bohemians can probably attribute their pre-season player losses to the reason they’ve been largely inconsistent this season. I mean, they lost instrumental midfielder Keegan and essential defender Powell, for starters. They also lost Higgins, McGlynn, and Cretaro, which along with Keegan, made up most of their midfield on the average day. Leading goalscorer Byrne left for Dundalk and ultimately, this Bohemians side is something of a shell compared to the Bohemians of old. They still have some good players in their ranks but with new players and a large loss of quality, it’s no great surprise that Bohemians aren’t faring so well, especially when it comes to breaking through sides. They counter well enough but you need good cohesion when breaking down opponents which is precisely what Bohemians lack at the moment, hence scoring just three goals in their past seven home games, winning just once along the way. Bohemians haven’t won at home this season when they’ve conceded so they could struggle here, just as they did in their 1-0 win against Drogheda at the start of the season.

Since their 1-2 win at a disjointed Galway United side, Droheda have drastically improved and have actually won four out of their last six games in all competitions, scoring twelve goals along the way, which is an average of two goals scored per game. They’re still conceding goals – I mean, that’s why they’re battling relegation, after all – but their recent burst of form has started to alarm sides that they face. They claimed a highly unexpected 1-2 win at Dundalk lately and beat UCD 3-1 at home in their last match so momentum is strong in the Drogheda camp. Only an idiot would say that they’re good enough to match Bohemians today so don’t get me wrong here. However, they’re scoring goals and Bohemians aren’t and considering how short the hosts are to win this game, I think there’s an advantage that the visitors can exploit here.

Bohemians have beaten Drogheda for seven consecutive meetings now and they may well win today. However, it’s worth noting that Drogheda would have won four out of the last five head-to-heads with a +1.5 goal head start and bearing in mind that a lot of those games took place when Bohemians had a very strong squad at their disposal, I think it’s more than worth a shot here to give the visitors a head star against their more illustrious hosts. For me, odds of 3/4 on giving Drogheda a +1.5 goal head start is too generous to ignore so that’s my call for this game.

Verdict: Drogheda United to win with a +1.5 handicap at 3/4.
