I like Celta de Vigo but boss Berizzo has set his stall out very early on in 2017 by resting his mainstays for the Primera Liga games, and saving them for the UEFA Europa League games. Now that they’re in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League with nothing left to achieve domestically, it’s logical to expect more of the same here.
Celta de Vigo encountered an Andalusian team in their last Primera Liga outing, stuffing Tony Adams’ Granada 3-0 in their own backyard despite deploying their “B” team. I doubt today’s game against Andalusian opposition will be as easy because Real Betis Balompie have been immense in 2017. They’ve played with a real hunger and belief that I didn’t see from them for some time. Victor Sanchez is getting the best out of a rather limited squad, but they look very good for it, even when results don’t go their way.
What I like most about the southerners is their comfort on the ball. Scoring goals is never going to be too hard for them with old Ruben Castro up front, so making chances for him had to be the priority, based on what we saw from Real Betis Balompie earlier in the season. Ceballos has played his part, but it’s Sanabria and loanee Ruben Pardo that have impressed me the most in that regard. That trio are very composed and creative, though, and with veteran Joaquin alongside them, Real Betis Balompie possess a significant attacking threat. Sanabria is out for this game, unfortunately, but I believe that Real Betis Balompie will have ample opportunities to counter-attack their hosts here so I am not too concerned by his absence. They do ship goals, if pressurised properly, but their ability to keep the ball and their tenacity tends to ensure that teams find it hard to bag against them, just as RCD Espanyol found out in Barcelona lately. They’ve become a handful, Real Betis Balompie – that’s the best way I can put it – and I do not think that the Galicians’ “B” team will beat them here for that reason.
Don’t get me wrong here – this Celta de Vigo “B” team are not crap. Far from it! As it goes, I am a fan of both Jozabed and Hjulsager. Bongonda and Beauvue put themselves about well too. However, this “B” team has their limitations. Beating a poor, mis-managed Granada team is one thing, but beating a focused, committed, and frankly fresher Real Betis Balompie is another prospect entirely, even at Balaidos. The southerners have a pretty impressive record in Vigo, and they don’t really have an excuse for failing to get something from this game, particularly with the fresher squad and no pressure on them.
My call is to lay Celta de Vigo.
Verdict: Real Betis Balompie to win with a +0.5 Asian Handicap at 21/25.
