The Copa Sudamericana?

Second in prestige to the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Sudamericana is a South American club cup competition that takes place in the second half of the year.

Established in 2002, the competition is a pure elimination tournament with varying numbers of teams and rounds every year, from the same 10 associations that make up the Libertadores.

The winner of the competition then faces the winner of the Libertadores in the Recopa Sudamericana, or “Winner’s Cup”. The champion also wins entry into the following season’s Libertadores in a similar model to that of the Europa League and Champions League.

In 2016, the cup was awarded to Chapecoense following the tragic plane crash that killed 71 people, including 19 players and staff from the Chapecó side. The title means that the team won the right to feature in the 2017 Libertadores.

Why we love the Copa Sudamericana

Despite outcomes often being relatively predictable on the day, only one side – Boca Juniors – have won the competition more than once. In fact, only three sides have ever featured in more than one final.

For some sides, access to the Libertadores is a grand prize, and the competition is generally hard fought despite being secondary to the first half of the year’s more famed tournament.
