Corinthians vs Atletico Mineiro

Free

Today’s featured game is in Brazil’s Serie A and features Corinthians and Atletico Mineiro. Interestingly, this is the worst run of form Corinthians have been on in Serie A this year as they’re on a winless run of a daunting five games now. Today they host second-placed Atletico Mineiro, a side in a decent run of form and are unbeaten in their last two outings. As far as Brazilian clubs go, they’re a pretty good away side. Corinthians, ironically, are a pretty deadly force at home with six wins from nine game thus far this season on their own turf. There’s no doubt in my mind that the hosts are the better side between these two but the league standings and club form doesn’t show that at the moment. So why am I calling a home win? Well, it’s very simple. There have been some reports emerging from Brazil over the past couple of days that Atletico Mineiro are actually missing no less than six first team players from their squad for this game. They’re actually missing nine players but three of those aren’t starters, generally. When something as unfortunate as this occurs, form and league placing tends to take a backseat. With the above information in mind, I’d take 10/11 on a home win today before the odds drop rapidly, which I’m sure they will when this information gets around. It may even be worth your time to attempt a cheeky -1.75 handicap if you feel inclined!

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Corinthians vs Atletico Mineiro – home win at 10/11 or with -1.75 handicap – see introduction for full details.

Naftan Novopolotsk vs MTZ-RIPO Minsk – home win at evens. Despite my beloved Naftan Novopolotsk having finally had their fine home record crushed for the second time this season, I’m jumping back on the bandwagon for them to return to winning ways. I forewarned you all last time around because Shakhtyor Soligorsk were a sleeping giant, which is exactly what they proved to be. Today I’m warning you of the exact same thing but I do still expect a home win, especially when you consider that the visitors today have lost four from their last five games, having drawn the other. Taking a home win at evens here could prove to be very fruitful.

Gremio vs Flamengo – home win at 4/5. Out of the two sides, it’s fair to say that Flamengo are the better form-side currently but in terms of quality, there’s little between them. However, despite the above, Gremio’s home form is one most sides would kill for; nine games, seven wins, two draws. Flamengo’s away form, like most Brazilian sides, leaves a lot to be desired. For that reason, I’m calling a tight home win and feel it’s got some value as it’s at 4/5.

Sport Recife vs Sao Paulo – away win at 10/11. What to say here? Sport Recife are getting worse and worse and look destined to be relegated. They’ve now lost four in a row. They’re hosting a Sao Paulo side on such a phenomenal run of form that you wouldn’t know it was the same side that was lingering near the foot of the table a couple of months back. Now they steamroller into this game on the back of five straight wins and look more than capable of making it six against Serie A’s current bottom club. Odds of 10/11 are a steal here!

Viktoria Plzen vs Slovan Liberec – home win at 6/5. This is a dubious but potentially worthwhile bet. Viktoria Plzen have atypically made an unnoticed and quiet entrance to the season with one win, one draw and one defeat. This form actually sums up their general ability pretty well – average i.e. mid-table side. However, today they’re hosting a Slovan Liberec side who have their eyes firmly fixed upon a tricky tie in Bucharest next week. Not only that, but their more illustrious opponents today are yet to register a win in the Gambinus Liga this season with two defeats and one draw to their name. I can’t see that changing today so a home win at 6/4 looks rather intriguing.

Naevsted vs Fyn – home win at 10/11. I’m just baffled by these odds, I really am. Naevsted already have three points on the board from their opening game victory. They seem rather intent on emulating, if not bettering, last year’s impressive league finish of 5th place. Today’s opponents Fyn were welcomed to the Danish 1st Division with a defeat to Thisted. The newly-promoted seem set to struggle with that particularly poor result. If you add poor/new side travelling to experienced/potential promotion candidates with good morale, then surely you’re left with a home win? I am, and 10/11 are good odds to take it at!

Skive vs Braband – home win at 11/10. Despite almost being relegated last season, Skive still managed to boast one of the Danish 1st Division’s better home records, which was the main reason they managed to stay up. Today they host Braband, a newly-promoted side, so it’s a game that Skive know they could and should win this. It is still the start of the season so do approach with caution but a home win at 11/10 looks good value here.

Vestjaelland vs Kolding – home win at 5/6. Another one of the strugglers from last season’s Danish 1st Division, Kolding, travel to face newly-promoted Vestjaelland. The hosts not only gained promotion to this division but absolutely waltzed their way there with a very impressive run of wins both home and away. These two sides know that they’ll probably end up fighting it out with each other to stay up, along with a few others of course, so every point counts here. However, given that the season is still new, I expect Vestjaelland to still have some of last season’s momentum, enough so to give them a win today. Odds of 5/6 look decent value for this outcome.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool – home win at draw no bet odds of 10/11. This is one of my more interesting calls. Tottenham Hotspur are a funny side in that all of the big sides in England struggle against them. Liverpool’s magnificent run of form in the first part of last season was actually ended here at White Hart Lane. Since then, Tottenham Hotspur have improved the squad considerably with some impressive signings and look all set to begin their season in search of European football next year. They’ve got a good, large squad, as ever, but now they have an established and proven manager with bags of experience – Harry Redknapp. He’s been around long enough to know the score by now. Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez grudgingly let star playmaker Xabi Alonso leave just a week or so ago and brought in Italian Alberto Aquilani in from AS Roma to replace him. However, Serie A players don’t adapt to the English game quickly so I don’t expect anywhere near the same level of performance as Alonso would have produced. On top of that, Liverpool have some pretty severe defensive worries. In fact, rumour has it that they’re missing two/three of their regular four defenders. Against a tenacious and generally well-organised side like Tottenham Hotspur, this could prove to be a real downfall for last season’s overachieving Merseyside outfit. For those reasons, a home win with draw no bet at 10/11 looks very inviting.

HJK Helsinki vs JJK Jyvaskyla – home win with -1.75 handicap at 10/11. I’m beginning to hate JJK Jyvaskyla immensely for producing the most bizarre displays away to sides in the Veikkausliiga that are better than they are.  However, today is the occasion where the games of HJK Helsinki are what Sir Alex Ferguson would call “squeaky bum time” – i.e. they need to win. Their form hasn’t been good but this is the perfect catalyst for them to bounce back into form and move four points clear of Honka Espoo, who won 3-1 at home to Tampere United yesterday. Make no mistake though – if HJK Helsinki get one goal at home, they’ll get two, particularly against a poor JJK Jyvaskyla outfit that will have to attack if they fall behind because they need the points too. I’m predicting an open game but HJK Helsinki should break the -1.75 handicap somewhat comfortably so 10/11 looks inviting.

VPS Vaasa vs TPS Turku – away win at 11/10. This is a slightly dubious call because both sides have now won two in a row. TPS Turku are the better side here but the form of both sides makes this a tricky one to call. VPS Vaasa don’t really have anything left to play for this season as they’re too high to be relegated but too far off the leaders to maintain a realistic title challenge. However, TPS Turku are very much in the mix when it comes to potential Veikkausliiga winners so they know that only three points here today will do. The pressure is on them but I thoroughly expect them to deliver, as they have done for the majority of the season. For those reasons, 11/10 looks like good odds to take the away win today.

PK 35 Helsinki vs KPV Kokkola – away win at 13/8. This is arguably my riskiest call of the day but I do like it! Both of these sides are about as good as each other and both are vying for promotion from the Ykkonen. However, PK 35 Helsinki’s recent form has taken one hell of a nosedive with no wins in three games, losing two of them. KPV Kokkola, by contrast, have won four from their last five games, drawing the other. They’ve certainly got the momentum to win this game – all they need is a slice of luck to claim a valuable three points and to maintain their unbeaten record on the road this season. I think they can do it and it’s certainly worth a punt at 13/8.

OGC Nice vs Stade Rennais  – away win at 21/10. These odds both amuse and confuse me but nonetheless I’m still keen on the away win. Why? Well, to be blunt, Stade Rennais are better than OGC Nice. I always find that’s a useful ally when seeking out a good bet! Both sides won their opening games respectively and will look to maintain their momentum. It’s also worth noting that Stade Rennais won this exact fixture last season too. With the above information in mind, an away win at 21/10 looks intriguing.

Olympique de Marseille vs LOSC Lille – home win with -1.75 handicap at 21/10. After a frankly embarassing home defeat by lowly Lorient, LOSC Lille’s morale will have taken one hell of a blow. Aside from that, they’ve got a trip to Racing Genk to prepare for next week so their minds certainly won’t be 100% on this game. That’s always a dangerous thing to entertain mentally when facing a side of Olympique de Marseille’s stature because they almost always make the less focused side pay for it. I’ve already called a correct handicap on Olympique de Marseille’s trip to Grenoble last week so I’m hopefully calling another one today as Olympique de Marseille have even more quality this season than they did last season and look very well placed to show it too. A home win at -1.75 handicap with odds of 21/10? This looks a real bargain!

Koblenz vs Arminia Bielefeld  – away win at 11/10. After a brave and lengthy battle against relegation last season, Koblenz look set for yet another dogfight if their current form is anything to go by. The hosts are still winless in this campaign and today entertain recently-relegated Arminia Bielefeld, one of the last sides they want to play when they have no momentum. Whereas I don’t expect a demolition, an away win should be on the cards so it’s worth taking at 11/10.

PSV Eindhoven vs AFC Ajax Amsterdam  – away win with draw no bet odds of 11/10. I’m a bit worried about this one because I called something similar last season in similar circumstances and was blown out of the water by a strange result! Basically, PSV Eindhoven haven’t got going for whatever reason – I personally think it’s mostly related to their transfer issues i.e. lack of money etc. – and a still winless in this campaign. AFC Ajax Amsterdam, however, have started with a bang under talented manager Martin Jol and look extremely keen on winning the Eredivisie this year. They’ve got some fantastic players and enter this game with tremendous momentum. For those reasons, I’m taking an away win at draw no bet odds of 11/10. However, I do emphasise caution because these sides are big rivals and as I said earlier, I had a similar situation last season where PSV Eindhoven ended up winning 4-1 against all odds!

Heracles vs Feyernoord Rotterdam  – away win at 11/10. The hosts may have caused many a raised eyebrow with their opening day victory over reigning champions AZ Alkmaar, but the fact remains that they’re still not a very good outfit. Today they host Feyenoord Rotterdam, perhaps most famous in recent years for being wildly unpredictable. However, they do possess a good squad and should have enough quality and momentum here to do a job on Heracles. Odds of 11/10 could prove worthwhile here.

Lech Poznan vs Polonia Warsaw – home win with -1.75 handicap at 7/5. The more I see of Lech Poznan, the more impressed I am and the more justified I feel for tipping them to win the Ekstraklasa this season. They’ve got a young and talented squad and seem keen to show it at every opportunity. Their goalscoring knows little bounds, if indeed any, and they look set to continue their form today. They’re hosting Polonia Warsaw, a side who performed well last year but have been a little haphazard thus far this season. As far as Polonia Warsaw are concerned, this is not the time to face an in-form and freescoring Lech Poznan side, particularly when they’re away from home. I think they’ll be terrified of this side today and rightfully so too! A home win at -1.75 handicap odds of 7/5 looks good value.

Pacos de Ferreira vs Porto – away win with -1.75 handicap at 6/4. Despite being somewhat concerned with Porto’s inbalance between players bought and sold this summer, I still expect them to win this game convincingly. This is largely due to the fact that Pacos de Ferreira are shit and find goalscoring a rather difficult pastime. I think Porto are more than good enough to break the -1.75 handicap here today and 6/4 are good odds to see it happen.

SL Benfica vs Maritimo – home win with -1.75 handicap at 13/10. I’ve already made a bold statement that I feel SL Benfica will win the Liga Sagres this year because of their quality signings and their poaching of Braga’s manager so I’m ready to make another bold statement and back SL Benfica to beat a good Maritimo side with -1.75 handicap. I feel the hosts are too good for the visitors, they’re on their own turf, they have a point to prove and they have a manager that can bring the best out in them. For those reasons, a home win with -1.75 handicap at 13/10 looks a bargain!

Steaua Bucharest vs Unirea Urziceni – home win at 5/6. Unirea Urziceni exceeded most people’s expectations last season, including my own. This season, they may just get brought back down to earth with a bang because Steaua Bucharest are looking ominously efficient and have a strong desire to win the Romanian Liga this year having missed out on it for three years running now. They’ve been tested domestically and in European football already this season but Steaua Bucharest have emerged triumphant from all of their competitive games barring a 2-2 draw with title rivals CFR Cluj. Their football should be too much for Unirea Urziceni, however, unless they have aspirations to reproduce last season’s form on a much more regular basis! A home win at 5/6 looks very much worthwhile here.

Amkar Perm vs Zenit St Petersburg – home win with draw no bet odds of 13/8. After some very bizarre circumstances of late, Zenit St Petersburg have parted company with Dick Advocaat. The Dutch manager had guided them to a good level of success but controversy surrounding him and the chairman led to a parting of ways. Zenit St Petersburg have yet to appoint a new manager so enter this game with a caretaker boss instead. Amkar Perm have struggled this season but are still a capable side, particularly at home, having only lost twice at home all season. When you consider that Zenit St Petersburg have only won once away from home all season, you have to admit that a home win with draw no bet odds of 13/8 does begin to look very tempting!

FK Khimki vs Krylya Sovetov Samara – home win at 6/4. Things are going from bad to worse for Krylya Sovetov Samara. They’ve got massive financial problems and as a result, the team’s morale is taking a battering, much like their physical performance on the pitch. They’ve already exited Europen football this campaign in a surprise aggregate defeat to Ireland’s St Patrick’s Athletic. Their league form shows they’ve lost four from their last five games, drawing the other game. Whereas I really don’t rate Khimki as a team, if they have any intention of staying in this division then they’ll need whatever points they can get. Even a struggling Khimki side can smell blood and this seems the opportune moment for them to gain what would be an invaluable three points. Odds of 6/4 make this bet look very worthwhile. Obviously approach with catuion though because in terms of quality, the visitors are at least twice as good as the hosts.

Saturn Moscow Oblast vs Spartak Nalchik – home win at 5/6. After a shaky start to the season, Saturn Moscow Oblast are beginning to gather some momentum and put together some good form. They’ve now won three from their last four games, drawing the other. Normally I wouldn’t be drawn in enough to back them to win because they’re still not that good a side but today they’re entertaing Spartak Nalchik, one of the worst away sides in the whole division. They’ve played nine away games, lost six and drawn three. If you also consider that they’ve lost three of their last five games, winning neither of the other two games, you have to admit that 5/6 on a home win contains some decent value.

Spartak Moscow vs FK Moscow – home win at 10/11, over 2.5 goals at 10/11. This should be an absolutely fantastic game. I urge you to watch it if you get chance. Two of the most in-form sides in the Russian Premier League battle today with both sides craving three points to aid their pursuit of Rubin Kazan. Spartak Moscow have been playing some absolutely breathtaking football lately and look virtually untouchable at the current time. FK Moscow can’t be classified in the same quality bracket as Spartak Moscow and they don’t play as entertaining football. However, what they do play is efficient football and they are generally clinical with their chances and dangerous from set pieces. Also, take into account that this fixture was played a couple of matches ago in the Russian Cup, a game which saw FK Moscow win 2-1. I expect a lot of goals today as Spartak Moscow’s last three games have resulted in a total of eleven goals and FK Moscow’s last three games have resulted in a total of seven goals. This may not be the main rivalry in Moscow, but this is a rivalry nonetheless. For all of the above reasons, this should be a fantastic game from all perspectives and taking a home win at 11/10 or taking over 2.5 goals at 11/10 both look very good value.

Assyriska Sodertalje vs GIF Sundsvall – away win at 13/8. I don’t know what’s happened to GIF Sundsvall lately, but it seems they’re almost possessed by demons given their drastic increase of form! They’ve now won four games in a row and find themselves in third place. Today they travel to Assyriska Sodertalje, a side that are vying with them for promotion to the Allsvenskan but have suffered three straight defeats and are low on morale. The visitors are looking so strong with their form at the moment that I can’t help but ride the wave and back an away win at 13/8 today, particularly when you consider GIF Sundsvall’s impressive away form!

Luzern vs Young Boys Bern – away win at evens. As far as odds go, this match certainly boasts the most surprising ones I’ve seen for today’s games. I appreciate that Luzern have had a good start to the season and are currently unbeaten but that doesn’t change the fact that Young Boys Bern are two or three times better than they are, as well as matching them blow-for-blow as far as form goes. With no European committments following defeat to Athletic Club de Bilbao, Young Boys Bern’s focus returns to the Super League and current “title rivals” Luzern. I honestly can’t see the home side having a chance here – away win at evens could be the biggest bargain of the day!

Eskisehirspor vs Bursaspor  – away win at 7/5. As I mentioned on my pre-season preview a few days ago, I expect Bursaspor to have a very good campaign this year because they’ve got a good squad with some talented youngsters. Today they face Eskisehirspor, a side that barely managed to stay in the division this year – I’m not convinced they’ll manage it this year. After playing out a 0-0 draw with newly-promoted Manisaspor, the season ahead begins to look a little bit ominous for today’s hosts because given the situation that Manisaspor currently finds themselves in, it’s a game that that Eskisehirspor should really have won. They may yet learn the foolishness of such a result as today they host a much better side, a side they lost to at this ground last season too. For me, this game has an away win written all over it and 7/5 seems perfectly good odds to take a nice slice of value from!

Fenerbahce vs Sivasspor – home win with -1.75 handicap at 6/5. This is a risky call so approach with caution. However, given that Fenerbahce have strengthened their squad massively over summer with some very impressive acquisitions, you have to fancy them to do very well this year. They’re hosting last year’s runners-up, Sivasspor, who have started their campaign off on the wrong foot entirely. After being dumped out of European football by Belgian side Anderlecht, they were then undone at home to Trabzonspor, a side they should really be beating at home. All of the above only contribtes to demoralising Sivasspor, a side that are’t anywhere near as good on the road as they are at home. Add all of the above up and you have a home win. However, the odds are shit so I’m plumping for the -1.75 handicap at 6/5 because it should really be broken if things go according to plan!
