Dinamo Bucharest vs Poli Timisoara
FreeYesterday was bizarre – that’s the only way I can put it, unfortunately. Lokomotiva Zagreb somehow scored three, Polonia Bytom missed a penalty, Atalanta Bergamo had a man sent off, Debreceni VSC couldn’t hold a lead etc. etc. the list goes on. Rather than regretting an unfortunate day, however, let’s look forward to a potentially profitable saturday.
My featured game today is rapidly becoming a favourite of mine as it involves the ever-predictable Dinamo Bucharest as they host fellow title contenders Poli Timisoara.
Dinamo Bucharest, as loyal readers of this site will gradually be realising, cannot defend for shit but do love to score goals. They boast one of the worst defences in Romanian Liga football and yet also the most fearsome attack. There are innumerate possibilities for Dinamo in attack and that’s why nobody else can match them on that front. However, with defending as bad as theirs, any half-organised side stands a decent chance of taking a point or three off them. Indeed, it’s no coincidence at all that all eight of Dinamo’s home games this season have gone over 2.5 goals due to glorious attacking football and appalling defending and I expect more of the same today. Dinamo won 2-4 at newly-promoted Victoria Branesti last match with the hosts scoring in that game despite being reduced to ten men, thus proving my point about Dinamo rarely having control of a game but always contributing goals to it with their free-flowing football.
Visitors Poli Timisoara haven’t been at their best in recent times but a win at home to league leaders Otelul Galati last match will have aided their cause. They’re generally a defensive unit on the road but that’s going to have to change in this game as they know they’re going to concede at somepoint; nobody can keep this Dinamo side out in Romania. However, Timisoara’s tactics in Bucharest over the past few years have worked well and it’s no surprise really as Dinamo simply can’t defend. It’s a shame that Zicu isn’t playing to his best at the moment as the ex-Dinamo Bucharest man is somewhat key to Timisoara’s play and he’d have a lot of fun in this game, should he feel so inclined, although interestingly Timisoara have left him out of their squad today. Nonetheless, Timisoara have enough in attack themselves to cause a lot of problems in this game and perhaps it’s finally time for them to gain some consistency after a fairly inconsistent campaign thus far. Let’s face it – they’ve got enough ex-Dinamo players to have the motivation in this game to do it as well with Alexe and Helder having come to Timisoara from Dinamo, just to name a couple!
Four out of the last five games between these two sides have gone over 2.5 goals and four out of the last five meetings between these two sides in Bucharest alone have gone over 2.5 goals with Poli Timisoara winning the last two so don’t get any crazy ideas about entering the 1×2 market here. For me, there are two very good sides on show here and there really should be goals as the hosts can’t keep a clean sheet but it’s rare that they don’t score at least two goals at home. With the above in mind, taking over 2.5 goals at evens looks unbelievably generous so that’s my selection today.

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory – over 2.5 goals at 9/10.
Neither of these two sides are performing anywhere near as well as they should be this season and it stems from one common factor; poor defending. In this game, one of the worst defensive home records in the A-League encounters one of the worst defensive records on the road in the A-League so I’d be beyond surprised to see a boring 0-0 here. Wellington Phoenix have decided to only play well when they’re at home in New Zealand this season and that’s worked quite well for them with four wins, two draws, and just two defeats from eight home games this season. The Victory aren’t performing to their usual standards on the road with a large lack of goalscoring being their problem, which is ironic as they’ve attempted to play more attacking football over the past few weeks and instead they’ve started conceding more without really scoring enough! Indeed, six out of their last seven games have gone over 2.5 goals, just as seven out of Wellington Phoenix’s last eight home games have too. Both of these sides are capable of playing attractive football but neither offers a solid defence and thus neither side can hold a lead. Therefore, you can forgive me for expecting goals in this game – hell, two out of the last three games between these two sides in New Zealand have gone over 2.5 goals and I’ll be very surprised to see anything but that occurring today at rather generous odds.
Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 9/10.

Beroe vs Cherno More Varna – home win at 7/5.
You have to fancy Beroe at such a generous price here. Few trips are more difficult in Bulgaria than to face the physical hosts Beroe and Cherno More Varna are well on their way to discovering that. Beroe boast the best defence in Bulgaria on their own turf with just two goals conceded in six A PFG games. Beroe have won three of those games and drew the other three, which I personally think is a very good record for a side devoid of stars. Nobody has scored against Beroe in Beroe’s last four home games in the A PFG and I don’t expect that to change today. Beroe’s problem is goalscoring, to be blunt. Their well-organised defence is immense but their defensive line-up leaves their attack somewhat limited. Fortunately, they do attack more on their own turf, naturally, so I’m expecting something from them today.
It helps that Aleksandar Alesandrov is suspended for this game for Cherno More Varna as he’s an important defender for the visitors, who generally line up in a very similar fashion to their hosts i.e. defensive. Cherno More attack a lot more than Beroe do at home but away from home, Cherno More just don’t bother turning up, bizarrely. They’ve played six away games in the A PFG this season, losing five times, leaking over two goals per away game on average, and scoring a measly two goals along the way. Don’t get me wrong – the record is a bit more dismissive of Cherno More than I’d like as I actually rate them quite highly – but their inability to perform on the road is consistent year after year so it’s true to a certain extent at least. I’ve never been able to explain why Varna’s ability is halved when they play away from home but that’s simply what occurs and without a key part of their defence today, I fancy them to struggle against a good Beroe side.
Prepare yourselves for the game of the day to not watch here, guys! The last three games between these two sides have ended 0-0 and neither prolific so we should see another low-scoring game today. However, Beroe at 7/5 are too long because if they take the lead then they really should hold it – few sides can score against this resilient defence – and I think it’s worth taking a chance on them winning this game today as a result.

Rijeka vs Dinamo Zagreb – away win at 3/4.
Dinamo have struggled at Rijeka in the past and make no mistake here – this is definitely not an easy away game today. The bookies know that, hence the alluring odds of 3/4 on a side that is usually 1/2 at the longest for an away game in the Prva Liga. However, I think the bookies are going to get burned today because Rijeka have seldom looked as vulnerable as they do now for some years. The unwritten rule of the Prva Liga is not to bet against Rijeka when they’re at home and that’s because it’s a very intimidating venue, not to mention the fact that Rijeka are a good side, generally. However, their dismal home form of late makes them look at the visit of Croatia’s biggest club and tremble because their visitors are in prime position to have a lot of fun here. Rijeka have lost three out of their last four home games in all competitions against shit travellers – Osijek, Inter Zapresic, and Varteks Varazdin respectively – none of which they should be losing to at home. More worryingly than that is the fact that they’ve conceded eleven goals in those three games – that’s not a record to take into a game against mighty Dinamo Zagreb and the visitors will finally feel a sense of confidence ahead of a trip that has troubled them for years. Bosnia-Herzegovina manager Halilhodzic has really whipped the Prva Liga champions into shape since arriving, especially in their much-needed problem area of defence. Dinamo have impressively kept nine clean sheets in all competitions, winning eight of those games, the most recent of which was a 0-6 drubbing against relegation favourites Hrvatski Dragovoljac. I like their options and tactical awareness under their new boss especially. Consider their last few away games, for example. They faced in-form Inter Zapresic, who are notorious for being strong at home and not conceding many so Dinamo attacked them in the way that only they can and won 0-3. They then faced Club Brugge, a side who can match them in potency, so Dinamo lined up defensively and counter-attacked incredibly well, winning 0-2. They then faced an iron defence in Split, a side that nobody has an easy ride against, so Dinamo played it tactical, converted their chances and ended up grinding out a 0-1 win. They then took on Hrvatski Dragovoljac and Dinamo knew they couldn’t defend, played “the beautiful game”, and destroyed them 0-6. The way that Dinamo approach each game and the way that they take their chances really illustrates their superior quality advantage in this division and it’s going to take a lot from an unconvincing Rijeka side to match their achievements over the past few years by not losing at home to Dinamo today.
Atypically, I’d stay away from this game as the odds would be something of a trap. However, I see value in the away win today because Rijeka’s current side is not worthy of the respect that they’ve been given here. Dinamo have always been better than Rijeka but now that they’re showing it on such a consistent basis, I have to favour them here at generous odds of 3/4.
Verdict: Dinamo Zagreb to win at 3/4.

Barnsley vs Watford – home win at 5/4.
These odds look a potential gift on a Barnsley win today. No trip to Oakwell should ever be taken lightly as this side is not easy to beat. Watford have lost three consecutive visits here so they know the score and yet another freezing game in Yorkshire is not welcome for any side, let alone a Watford side that has one of the worst away records in the Championship when it comes to defending. To Watford’s credit, they are the biggest goalscoring away side in the division and do tend to make sides work to beat them as you have to outscore them. However, abysmal defending tends to mean that this does actually occur and could well occur again today. Only four Championship sides have conceded less at home than Barnsley have this season and five wins in nine home games is a good record, especially as only two of those games have resulted in defeat. Barnsley have won three consecutive games ahead of thsi encounter too, impressively winning at a good Ipswich Town along the way, so morale is high here. Watford, however, are without a win in six games and although they’re scoring goals, the lack of three points as they come away from each game has to be disheartening and Oakwell is no place for a side devoid of spirit.
Watford welcome back John Eustace for this game and Barnsley miss midfielder Doyle through suspension but I still think Barnsley are too long at 5/4 here, despite goalscoring not being their main aim. This is never an easy away game so my call is the home win here as Watford’s defence simply isn’t up to the task here.
Verdict: Barnsley to win at 5/4.

AEK Athens vs Olympiakos Piraeus – away win at 5/4.
I can’t really shed much light on this Athens derby other than to say that Olympiakos are simply better than AEK. Olympiakos’ only real title challengers are Panathinaikos and even they’re rather weak this year. AEK will always bring spirit to a game and let’s face it – this is an Athens derby and caution must be utilised with that in mind. However, AEK’s crippling debts will always leave them behind Olympiakos and Panathinaikos as they invariably lack the quality of their neighbours and it’s in games like this where it should really show. AEK were appalling in their last game at Kavala and will find life today very tough if their performance is anything like what it was in that game. That said, Olympiakos weren’t much better against PAOK, although that’s considerably more acceptable in my book! Both sides have more strength in attack than defence so we can expect a few goals here, especially with key defender Mellberg missing this game for Olympiakos. However, the return of playmaker Ibagaza will add another string to Olympiakos’ bow in attack and simply put, I expect them to score more than AEK today. 5/4 is a decent price on this occurring so that’s my call today.

Padova vs Varese – home win at evens.
Derby defeat against Vicenza won’t sit well with Padova at all; revenge is nigh! That said, it was an away game and Padova are unbelievably inept on the road, for some inane reason. Nonetheless, they’re a dynamic home side and with Serie B’s leading goalscorer Davide Succi in electric form, I fancy the machine that is Padova to return to winning ways today. They’ve already won six out of eight at home this season and although Varese look like experts at avoiding defeat on paper, they may find this to be a bridge too far. The newly-promoted side haven’t lost in their last four away games but who have they faced? Portosummaga, Vicenza, Grosseto, and Ascoli – four rather poor/average sides at best – so I don’t think they’re as good as their record would have you believe. Varese are a competent side and won’t make it easy for Padova today but Padova realistically should be far too good for their opponents as Varese don’t score enough goals and Padova are the joint-leading goalscorers in home games this season with a virtually unheard-of record of over two goals scored per home game on average thus far! Padova’s defence is strong too and ultimately, there should be a real quality mismatch here. I know Padova lost at Vicenza last match but seriously – evens on the home win here? It shouldn’t be longer than 4/6, in my opinion, so the home win is my call here.

Siena vs Novara – home win at evens.
This home win is distinctly more risky than the above one in Serie B because Novara are truly the side to beat at the moment. However, all good runds must come to an end and I think today’s the day that Novara get brought back down to earth. They’ve been terrific since being promoted from Serie C by being a nightmare to beat and by scoring goals freely. Quality-wise, however, they’re not even a top six side, in my opinion, so I think it’s fairly inevitable that they’ll be “caught out” soon. Siena are virtually a Serie A side with some of the players they have available to them and seven wins in eight home games demonstrates that rather well, as does their average of scoring over two goals per home game and conceding a goal per every two home games on average. They’re very much a complete unit and I’ll be surprised if they’re not promoted this season. Novara are more of a wild card in this division. They lack the quality and experience of Siena but make up for it by having a good manager and a set of players that have played together for a long time. That said, I think Novara’s Achilles Heel today will be the pitch surface. As you may or may not know, Novara are the only side in the top two tiers of Italian football to play their home games on artificial turf. This has already proven to be a massive advantage against good sides at home this season but away from home, they’ve struggled somewhat when encountering good sides, losing at Torino and drawing at Padova in the only two really hard away games that they’ve faced. I think a rampant Siena home side will be too much for the enthusiastic visitors; momentum can only take you so far. I therefore deem evens on the home win to be decent value today.

Arka Gdynia vs Slask Wroclaw – away win with draw no bet at 11/10.
Let’s be terribly blunt here – Arka are only still in the Ekstraklasa because they’re bloody hard to beat. They don’t play good or attractive football, they don’t score goals – they just work very, very hard, and defend as if their lives depended upon it. However, when they lose that defensive edge, they become incredibly vulnerable and that is starting to happen. It’s not happening due to a lack of morale or motivation per se, but absentees, as you would expect from a squad with limited size and quality. They’ve lost back-to-back games ahead of this encounter as a result of absentees but most importantly, they’ve conceded five goals along the way, which definitely isn’t like them. They’re back on familiar ground today but at what cost? They miss Rozic, Robakowski, Bednarek, Burkhardt, Glavina, Sulima, and Bledzewski through injury and now also miss Szmatiuk through suspension. They nearly missed Marciano for this game too until his red card was rescinded on the basis that it was a stupid card to be given! Either way, Arka are bereft of defenders in this game and are looking to give seventeen year old Zolnierowicz a try in this game as a result. For a side whose strength is entirely in defence, Arka are going to struggle in this game, especially as they massively struggle to score goals. I feel Arka are sitting ducks here and maybe Slask can take advantage.
Although Slask are still missing long-term absentee Diaz in attack, who is a hefty loss for them, Slask are still playing good football. They weren’t always since his injury but new manager Lenczyk has got them playing really well. Indeed, Slask have now won four consecutive Ekstraklasa games, albeit with three of them at home. Their win at GKS Belchatow was still impressive as it’s not an easy venue to play at and it also took their record of clean sheets on the road to three consecutive games, one of which was at giants Wisla Krakow. It’s interesting to see that as Slask’s attacking game is improved, their defence has also been improved. New manager Lenczyk certainly knows what he’s doing here and this Slask side are very well motivated and have a lot of momentum so why shouldn’t they upset the apple cart today? I don’t like away wins in the Ekstraklasa much but Slask have a much better chance of taking a win here than the bookies let on, in my opinion, especially as they’ve been training on an artificial pitch lately to get used to Arka’s pitch before meeting them on it today!
I can see why the odds are so generous with Arka yet to lose in six consecutive Ekstraklasa home games. However, the statistics are only applicable for when Arka has a full side available to them, which they absolutely don’t have today. I therefore feel the odds are a bit misleading and that there’s value on Slask edging this one although covering it with DNB is always advisable against a tough nut to crack like Arka Gdynia!
Verdict: Slask Wroclaw to win with draw no bet at 11/10.

Otelul Galati vs Astra Ploiesti – lay Otelul Galati at 17/10.
I’m a big advocate of Otelul Galati. I like their energy, their focus on youth, their drive, their tenacity, and their good organisational skills. However, as good as they are and as well as they’ve been playing, they’re not a big side and they’re not natural goalscorers. How on earth they’re nearly 2/5 to win this game is absolutely beyond me. Otelul at home are very hard to play against, admittedly, but Otelul aren’t good enough in attack to command those odds, especially not after their 2-0 defeat that was inflicted by a good Poli Timisoara side upon them last match. Astra Ploiesti aren’t a particularly good side but they do specialise in avoiding defeat. They’ve only lost twice in eight away games this season and one of those games was against giants Rapid Bucharest! Astra have played CFR Cluj and Steaua Bucharest away from home this seasona and taken a draw from both encounters so don’t underestimate the visitors here based upon their league placing. Astra are playing well at the moment – they’ve not conceded a goal for three games now – and I don’t think Otelul will find it easy to play against them here.
Otelul would have to be 4/5 to interest me in this game because they’re not good enough goalscorers to shatter a resilient Astra Ploiesti side easily today so I’m sure as hell not touching them at nearly 2/5. Astra claimed a 0-0 draw at sleeping giants Vaslui last match so they know how to defend against sides. Otelul will work very hard here and probably should edge it but on the back of a defeat and facing a very strong defensive unit, I think laying them at 17/10 shows some value as it’s far too generous in my eyes.
Verdict: Lay Otelul Galati at 17/10.

Celtic vs Inverness Caledonian Thistle – away win with +1.5 goal handicap at 5/4.
I think it’s fair to observe that the glory days of Rangers and Celtic are gradually coming to a stop in Scotland because the gap is closing and those two giants of Scottish football don’t boast the financial clout that they used to for obvious reasons. I also don’t think Lennon is the man for the job at Celtic – you need a much more clever manager and you can see that in the games this season where Celtic have been caught out. When have you ever seen Celtic throw a one-goal lead away at home to Rangers to lose 1-3? What about conceding a late goal at home to Dundee United last match to draw 1-1 too? This Celtic side is lacking in ability on the basis that they don’t have as much as they used to but they’re also lacking confidence and that has to start with the manager. For me, Lennon is a problem for Celtic, despite being a legend whilst playing for them, and whilst he’s there they are still susceptible. I think that’s partially visible by the fact that if you give the opponents of Celtic a +1.5 goal head start for all of Celtic’s home games this season then Celtic only win four out of their seven games, which isn’t like them – they’re usually a lot more dominant. However, sides recognise that they’re vulnerable now and none moreso than in-form Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Inverness have won a massively impressive five times in seven away games this season, remaining unbeaten throughout. Unlike most Scottish sides on the road, Inverness attack and score goals frequently and thus they do well. In fact, only league leaders Rangers have scored more than Inverness on the road with today’s visitors averaging scoring over two goals per away game. Inverness have already taken a draw from a trip to Ibrox; why not at Celtic Park today? I’m partially tempted to lay Celtic here because I don’t feel they merit 1/5 to win this game despite them being the obviously better side here. However, giving Inverness a +1.5 goal head start at 5/4 looks far too generous to overlook here because they’re riding the crest of a wave and are scoring goals for fun. Inverness are punching above their weight here, it has tobe said, so do be careful with this game. However, I think we’ll see an interesting game here and although I’d stay away from the more routine 1×2 betting for this game, I think giving the visitors a head start looks a genius idea for this game.

Girona vs Salamanca – home win at 13/10.
This is probably one of my more “random” selections of the day so take it if you wish but it’s based upon footballing styles. Girona play very good football, bluntly, and their home form always reflects that. Indeed, their head-to-head record with Salamanca shows it too as Salamanca are generally a very defensive, counter-attacking side. Girona have played six home games in the Segunda Liga this season, winning four times, drawing once, and losing just once. It’s important to note that they average scoring over two goals per home game with their flambuoyant football and also that only Real Valladolid, Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, and Real Betis Balompie respectively have scored more goals at home than Girona have this season. The footballing capability of Girona is often underestimated but they play good football and if they do it here then I’ll be surprised to see anything but a home win. Salamanca will line up defensively here, as they often do, and I doubt it’ll end well for them. How they’ve won four out of six on the road this season is beyond me – well, aside from the fact that they’ve beaten poor and/or out-of-form sides. However, reality is starting to kick in with Salamanca losing back-to-back away games in recent times and leaking five goals in two games won’t aid Salamanca’s tactics whatsoever. The only side to beat Girona at home this season was Villarreal II and the only way they did that was by scoring three goals. Everyone else that has come here has been outplayed and it usually shows in the scoreline. Hell, Girona overcame a superior Real Valladolid side 2-0 here so they know how to handle good sides. I therefore think it’s worth taking them to win this one at generous odds, especially as I really don’t rate Salamanca anywhere near as highly as their league placing suggests that they should be!
Verdict: Girona to win at 13/10.

Istanbul BB vs Fenerbahce – home win with draw no bet at 27/20.
Fenerbahce have a terrible record against local rivals Istanbul BB and with their defensive frailities there for all to see, I think we could see them struggle against. Fenerbahce have lost three consecutive trips to face their local rivals and given that Istanbul BB have only leaked two goals in five consecutive home games, I envision another tough night for the giants of Turkish Super Lig football. As far as Istanbul clubs go, Istanbul BB are often overlooked but they’re actually a very good side that are very hard to beat. Experienced Cameroonian striker Herve Tum and Swedish playmaker Samuel Holmgren add an extra dimension to this side that is often disregarded and although Istanbul BB aren’t as potent as they need to be to be recognised as a “big” Istanbul side, they’re still a good passing side and won’t lie down for anyone, especially not their big rivals. Only Galatasaray out of the “big three” have a knack of winning here; Besiktas JK and Fenerbahce always struggle here and that should be the case today.
The biggest threat to my bet is Niang, of course. I raised my eyebrows when Fenerbahce managed to somehow lure a striker that is far too good for the Super Lig to their club because I don’t know how they’ve done it. Still, fair play to them – they’ve got the best striker in the division playing for them and it’s paying great dividends as quality begins to look shorter in their side so his addition is very welcome, I’m sure. Fenerbahce have still been poor on the road this season, however. It’s not goalscoring that is their problem – it’s defending, which is something that seemingly continually eludes them. They’ve lost at Trabzonspor, Kayserispor, and Gaziantepspor already this season in the Super Lig, not to mention their defeat at Ankaragucu lately in the Turkiye Kupasi, and it’s just not good enough for a club of their size and stature. They’ve shipped six goals in two consecutive away games and with a dismal record leading them into this game, I really don’t fancy them here. Let’s face it – only Alex and/or Niang can win this game for Fenerbahce so I don’t see why Fener are so short for this game when they never play well in it.
Therefore, my call is the home win with draw no bet. Fenerbahce have already demonstrated their dislike of playing against tenacious sides and Istanbul BB are most certainly a tenacious side. The drawback is that the visitors are better goalscorers than the hosts, unfortunately, so if we see an open game then Fener will probably win it. However, I think the hosts will keep it tight, rough up their opponents, and take the chances that are bound to come their way due to shoddy Fenerbahce defending. I’ll take a chance on Niang not doing too much damage here as I think the hosts with DNB cover at 27/20 is far, far too generous for this game, although as always with derbies – be cautious!
