Dinamo Bucharest vs Universitatea Craiova

Free

Today’s featured game is the Romanian Liga encounter between heavyweights Dinamo Bucharest and resilient Universitatea Craiova. Both teams have surprised me this season in that Dinamo have found defending to be nothing more than an outlawed training activity and Universitatea have been playing better away from home than they have at home so I’m expecting a pretty interesting game here.

Without fear of contradiction, I can say that Dinamo Bucharest are the most exciting team in Romania to watch. Why? Well, you never know which Dinamo will turn up! On one day they can be chronic in defence and lose against vastly inferior sides and yet on another they’ll score five and destroy the best in the division. No side has scored more than Dinamo have this season but only newly-promoted Sportul Studentesc have leaked more goals than they have too so “over 2.5 goals” will no doubt soon be integrated into their club name soon enough. With the above statistics in mind, it can’t be a great a surprise that all seven of Dinamo’s Liga home games have gone over 2.5 goals and I’d be surprised to see anything but that today. Dinamo boast a terrific attack with the likes of Niculae, Ganea, and Danciulescu there to be fed by the two Cristeas, Torje, Munteanu, and N’Doye. Dinamo have goals in them from all over the park and that’s one feature of theirs that I really admire and enjoy – they’re simply never a boring side to watch so my hat goes off to them. However, they’re one of the most defensively-inept sides in Eastern Europe and their record of having conceded in thirteen out of fourteen Liga games this season backs that up entirely. Therefore, I expect Dinamo to both score and concede in this game and that helps my bet massively, naturally!

Visitors Universitatea Craiova went off the radar last season but it’s pleasing to see them return this season with some good but fairly puzzling displays. Universitatea used to be a side that is comparible to Otelul Galati of this season – a nightmare to play against at home, hard-working, resilient, and very well-organised but with little goal threat. Craiova are finally getting back to those ways but impressively they’ve developed an incisive counter-attacking style that is causing problems on the road. Universitatea Craiova are not a good side when it comes to breaking sides down because they don’t have the attackers to cause problems in that scenario. However, away from home, their counter-attacking potential is unleashed and that’s why they’re better away from home than they are at home this season. Six out of Universitatea’s seven away games in the Liga have gone over 2.5 goals this season because they’re scoring goals and they’ve actually won three consecutive away games so they do bring momentum into this game. Craiova won’t be afraid of Dinamo Bucharest but that’ll work both for and against them. They’re confident enough to take their chances but they’re going to get burned in defence by the best attack in Romania so I’m confident they’ll contribute to the over 2.5 goals tip too.

Ironically, these two sides met in this very fixture a few days ago in the Cupa Romaniei and the scoreline ended 1-1. I’d be beyond suirprised to see that occur again here with the above statistics in mind – few sides can limit Dinamo to one goal and Craiova are not one of those sides. Luck intervened and they’ll have to be very fortunate for it to intervene again today. I expect Craiova to score here but I expect Dinamo to score more. I wouldn’t touch the scoreline betting if you physically gave me the money yourselves because anything could happen here but over 2.5 goals is a lot more likely to occur here than the bookies think it is, in my humble opinion, so that’s my call here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Quilmes vs Godoy Cruz de Mendoza – away win at evens.

After thirteen rounds of fixtures in the Primera Division, Quilmes are the only side that is yet to win a game. By some accounts, that’s to be expected – newly-promoted sides find this division very, very tough indeed because the gulf in class is massive. Quilmes’ squad this season is assembled from the best of their team last year, experienced Primera Division players from other clubs, and whoever else they could get their hands on. Therefore, the gelling period is still in progress and when you consider that Quilmes cannot be more than an average side even when they are cohesive and when they’re in-form, you have to observe that their stay in the Primera Division looks like it won’t last long at all. Quilmes concede goals too easily but their biggest problem is that they’re the lowest-scoring side in the division and if you don’t score goals, you don’t win games. They’ve lost seven out of thirteen this season whilst drawing six so it’s easy to see why points are evading them. Their main striker is Morales, who hadn’t previously “made it” in Argentina before with Quilmes having drafted him in from Universidad Catolica in Chile and he wasn’t even a regular there. They’ve not seen enough of ageing striker Bernardo Romeo this season, which is a shame, as the quality of him in this division is well-known from his exploits at San Lorenzo de Almagro. However, my biggest problem with Quilmes is that their only quality player is Uruguayan winger Gustavo Varela and even he’s getting on a bit. Quilmes’ lack of quality is really starting to hurt them which is why they’ve lost four out of their last five games, scoring just once along the way. They’ve also lost three consecutive home games without even scoring a single goal along the way so morale is low and things are going from bad to worse and I don’t expect that to improve tonight.

I’m not a massive fan of the visitors Godoy Cruz de Mendoza. I think it’s largely because you never know which side will turn up with them – a side capable of winning 1-4 at Atletico Lanus or a side capable of losing 1-2 at home to Tigre? Nonetheless, the statistics don’t lie and no side has scored more goals on the road this season than Godoy have. They’re unbeaten on the road in six games, winning three times and drawing three times, which is a very strong record in any South American league. Look at the sides they’ve beaten too – Colon de Santa Fe, Arsenal de Sarandi, and Atletico Lanus – those three sides are not easy to face at home and Godoy have beaten each of them comfortably. Interestingly enough, all three of those sides have only lost two home games apiece this season so you can see just how well Godoy have played to gain those results. I admire their tenacity, their well-organised defence, and their ability to convert their chances but only if they turn up. Godoy hate playing against sides that they have to break down because they’re generally a good counter-attacking side but the hosts tonight have no choice but to attack tonight. Don’t get me wrong – Quilmes can’t be relegated when the Apertura ends in a few rounds’ time because that’s not how this league system works – but they can be relegated via the average points table in due course so they have to attack here. If there’s one thing I can’t fault about Quilmes then it’s their desire to win games but Godoy will match that and better it tonight if they wish to and that makes the away win appealing.

As you’d expect from a counter-attacking side, Godoy don’t rely excessively on their strikers although experienced Colombian frontman Jairo Fernando Castillo is very useful to their attack. Godoy gain most of their strength from midfielders like Ramirez, Rojas, Sanchez, and Villar, all of which contribute with goals on a fairly regular basis. That makes the threat of Godoy different to say Estudiantes De La Plata or Velez Sarsfield, for example, so it should be interesting to see how Quilmes deal with them. Nonetheless, I still fancy the away win for a prolific counter-attacking side against a poor host if the visitors are as motivated for the game (as they have been for the majority of their games this season) although I’d leave it if the odds drop.

Verdict: Godoy Cruz de Mendoza to win at evens.

Zulte-Waregem vs Kortrijk – home win at 6/5.

I’ve been quietly impressed with Zulte-Waregem this season because after the departure of Berrier, I genuinely expected them to struggle to stay in the division, such is the lack of creativity without him. However, they’ve done enough to be a stable mid-table side and they’ve earned my respect for that. The departure of Berrier has harmed their attacking game but their defensive game has remained as strong as ever. Zulte-Waregem are basically a very hard side to beat at the best of times which is why they’ve only lost four times in fourteen Eerste Klasse games this season and that consistency shouldn’t waiver today. Look at who it’s taken to actually beat Zulte-Waregem – Club Brugge, AA Gent, Racing Genk, and Mechelen respectively. Three of those sides are amongst the top sides in Belgium! The only one of those I don’t accept was the home defeat against a Mechelen side who cannot travel but that was a last-minute goal so you can see how solid Zulte-Waregem are. It’s always bold to back Zulte to win, however, because they’re not consistent with their goalscoring but a 0-3 drubbing at Sint-Truiden last match should give them tremendous confidence and I’m hoping that’s enough to see the likes of Hyland and Habibou do the damage today.

Visitors Kortrijk have a bafflingly superb head-to-head record against Zulte-Waregem for some inane reason that I simply cannot explain. However, Kortrijk’s Achilles heel is that they cannot play away from home. Much like their hosts, Kortrijk are hard to beat but offer little in front of goal. Their lack of goal threat on the road is the reason behind four defeats, two draws, and just one win away from home this season and I’d be surprised to see that change today. Unlike their hosts, Kortrijk were playing football just a few days ago in the Beker van Belgie as they were defeated at home by Mechelen and with Kortrijk having fielded a strong line-up for that game, there’s a chance of tiredness here, not to mention a slightly demoralised dressing room. Kortrijk are a much more “usual” side than their hosts in the sense that they rely exclusively on their strikers to score goals with Rossini and Ilombe having scored approximately 60% of their goals already this season. If Zulte-Waregem can restrict them then I don’t see Kortrijk scoring here and with momentum on their side, the hosts should bag at least once in this game so I think there’s a decent chance of a home win in this game today.

The risk factor is evident but I still think the odds on the hosts are a bit long. They’re fresher than their visitors, they have a strong home advantage, and they’re very hard to beat. Therefore, my call is for the home win at 6/5.

Verdict: Zulte-Waregem to win at 6/5.

Jablonec vs Sigma Olomouc – home win at 27/20.

Hosts Jablonec appear to finally be back on track for their title push although it’s still a long shot. League leaders Viktoria Plzen showed a sign of weakness by dropping points at home to Slovan Liberec and if Jablonec have any realistic title ambitions then they need to win this game and they know it. Fortunately, this game suits them as they’re not only playing well with four wins and one draw from their last five Gambrinus Liga games but also because they have a history of winning this encounter with four consecutive head-to-head wins (conceding just  once during that run!) leading them into this game. Jablonec impressively demolished fallen giants Slavia Prague 0-3 on the road in their last Gambrinus Liga match and with the news that integral striker David Lafata has signed a new contact with the club (not to mention young striker Jan Vosahlik), things are looking good for the hosts. Few sides have better defensive records than Jablonec do at home and the hosts average scoring over two goals per home game, hence their record of five wins, two draws, and just one defeat at home this season. Bluntly, everything favours Jablonec here so I fancy them to wreak havoc.

Visitors Sigma Olomouc are unfortunately not an easy side to beat, however. They may have only won twice in seven away games in the Gambrinus Liga this season but they’ve only been beaten twice too because of their rock-solid defence. Sigma lose their excellent level of potency in front of goal on the road, however, and I’ve yet to work out why that is. They’re capable of beating anyone at home but away from home, they look uninterested in winning their games; they prefer taking draws and generally avoiding defeat. However, Sigma’s stentorian displays on the road have lessened of late with their two defeats on the road this season coming in their last three Gambrinus Liga away games, losing against low-scoring Teplice and a frankly crap Hradec Kralove side, both of which were lost without Sigma even scoring. Sigma rely excessively on big target man Michal Hubnik and thus they need their wide players to be in fine form to score goals so that’s perhaps an explanation as to why they don’t do so well on the road – more compact pitches and tight defences can obviously halt such tactics. Sigma have a very solid defensive unit but if they don’t score here then they’re going to lose; Jablonec haven’t failed to score in a home game in nine consecutive Gambrinus Liga games.

Interesting point – Jablonec have already beaten one side from Olomouc this week as they destroyed HFK Olomouc 5-0 in the Pohar CMFS. They’ll get much more stiff opposition from Sigma Olomouc today but they’ve got more than enough in their favour to make it count today and the odds are generous enough to take a chance on.

Verdict: Jablonec to win at 27/20.

SonderjyskE vs FC Copenhagen – under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

This one speaks for itself, really. SonderjyskE’s involvement in games like this is to prevent opponents from scoring goals. Whilst doing so, the hosts lose a great deal of potency, which is why they don’t draw games at home. In every home game they’ve played this season (barring their previous match with FC Copenhagen), SonderjyskE have won if they’ve taken the lead and lost if they’ve fallen behind and thus they’re the stereotypical defensive home side in that they’re impossible to break down if they have a lead to hold but are easily exposed if they’re forced to attack. With that in mind, I’d much prefer Copenhagen not to bag an early goal here or this bet could be ruined. I expect Copenhagen to win this game but I still think under 2.5 goals represents better value here, especially as two out of their last three visits to face SonderjyskE have gone under 2.5 goals. I don’t see SonderjyskE scoring here as Ottesen returns for Copenhagen to face his old club so he’ll know Fabricius well enough to stop him scoring. If Copenhagen leave it long enough to score the first goal of the game then this game should easily end under 2.5 goals. However, if SonderjyskE score then this bet is ruined as Copenhagen will launch their full-on assault and if they do that in the Superligaen then they win the game – simple as that. However, odds of 11/10 on this game going under 2.5 goals looks decent to me as I don’t see the home side scoring.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 11/10.

America vs Pumas UNAM – home win at 4/5.

America’s attack is still none-too-convincing but they’re facing a very leaky Pumas UNAM defence so they should be able to do damage tonight. America may have faced some shit sides lately but they’ve still won three consecutive games and that momentum is quintessential to them if they intend on scoring against sides like Pumas UNAM so I’m happy to take a chance whilst they’re playing well. They’ve bagged seven goals in those three games and that potency should be enough to see them win tonight. Nobody wins at America; it just doesn’t happen. Whether America score enough to overcome their visitors without talismanic striker Cabanas, however, is another matter entirely. I like Vuoso but sometimes he needs a lot of coaxing to find the goal! However, a lot of that coaxing should come from the opposing defenders. You see, Pumas UNAM have only kept one clean sheet on the road this season and that was against a very impotent Guadalajara, which is understandable as they’d just sold start prospect Javier Hernandez to Manchester United. Pumas UNAM have a terrible record of having conceded at least two goals in each of their other six away games this season, which is why they’ve lost five of those games. Pumas UNAM don’t score goals on the road either, which is terrible news for them, especially as they’ve not scored when playing away from home against America in their last four visits, drawing twice and losing twice. However, Pumas UNAM are defending so badly at the moment that even a fairly clueless America attack should be able to bag a couple of goals against them and if that happens then America are going to win the game, barring a miracle. America need to win this game to be guaranteed a place in the next round of the Primera Division campaign and defeat here will still see Pumas UNAM in with a chance of qualifying themselves so I think taking the home win at 4/5 with the above in mind is worth taking.

Verdict: America to win at 4/5.

NEC Nijmegen vs ADO Den Haag – under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

NEC Nijmegen are the atypical counter-attacking side; they can’t break sides down that are sat stubbornly in front of them but they can score goals away from home for fun. Indeed, only AFC Ajax Amsterdam have scored more away goals than NEC Nijmegen this season so you can see my point. However, on home turf, NEC average scoring 1.5 goals per home game whilst averaging conceding less than a goal per home game so they’re quite a predictable home side. NEC drew 0-0 at home to Vitesse Arnhem last match so they’re fairly easy to prevent scoring goals if they right side comes along and ADO Den Haag fits the bill quite well, in my opinion. ADO Den Haag were superb in their 0-1 victory at local rivals AFC Ajax Amsterdam in their last Eredivise match as Ajax couldn’t find a way through their well-organised defence. ADO bring great confidence into this game as a result. ADO played Groningen away from home mid-week and lost out in the KNVB Beker in a penalty shootout after the initial game went to extra-time after a 1-1 draw. ADO’s last three games have now gone under 2.5 goals and their last two trips to Nijmegen have gone under 2.5 goals too as their defence becomes harder and harder to breach. ADO’s away record in the Eredivisie this season shows why the odds are as generous as they are on under 2.5 goals but with the hosts unlikely to score many and the visitors undoubtedly tired and defensively-minded for this encounter, under 2.5 goals looks more likely than the bookies give it credit for.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Chiasso vs Servette – away win at 6/5.

6/5 on a Servette away win looks far too generous here. There’s a big quality gap between these two sides that favours the visitors that simply isn’t reflected in the odds. Don’t get me wrong – Chiasso have played well since obtaining promotion to the Challenge League in time for this season but they’re playing well because sides find it hard to score against them, not because they’re a particularly good side. A statistic that most people tend to overlook from this season’s Challenge League campaign is that Chiasso have only played four home games and they’ve only won once – they’ve drawn twice and lost once aside from that. Only the current bottom three in the league have scored less home goals than Chiasso and it’s going to take more than a 3-0 win against Stade Nyonnais to convince me that this side is good enough to compete with the likes of Servette. Servette are one of the top sides in this division and although they need to improve away from home tactically in order to obtain promotion to the Super League next season, they have no problem with goalscoring, which is half of the battle, really. The Brazilian duo of Eudis and Antonio de Azevedo is proving far too much for Challenge League sides to handle and if those two turn up then Servette will win this game comfortably. Servette have demonstrated beyond any level of doubt that they know how to score goals this season, not to mention their recent record of four wins and one draw from their past five games in all competitions! Servette have notched up ten goals along the way and if they can break a stubborn Chiasso resolve then they really should win this game as Chiasso offer little in the way of attack or experience when compared to their more illustrious opponents. I think the odds on the away win should be shorter here so my value tip for this selection is the away win.

Verdict: Servette to win at 6/5.

Galatasaray vs Manisaspor – both sides to score at 7/10.

I cannot believe how generously this selection is priced at! Galatasaray are still missing Arda Turan, Milan Baros, Serkan Kurtulus, Hakan Balta, and Mustafa Sarp here, two of which are integral to Gala’s play. Sure, the hosts have new manager Hagi to inspire them but the fact is that they’re not a very good side anymore. They’re still a massive club and always will be but they’re not playing good football anymore – they’re far too easy to score against, for example. They’ve played five home games this season and have only kept a clean sheet in one of those games, many of which they disappointed in. Their last home game in the Super Lig was against Antalyaspor and I’ve no idea how they managed to win that one as they were vastly unconvincing. Gala are now facing a Manisaspor side that live for counter-attacks and with the news that Gala simply cannot defend and the knowledge that they’ve conceded in seven out of the eight meetings between these two sides since Manisaspor were promoted, you have to fancy them to struggle today. Manisaspor aren’t a particularly good side but they’re lethal in attack and have scored in every Super Lig away game this season barring their match at Genclerbirligi recently. They scored twice at Fenerbahce in a 4-2 defeat and have won at both Trabzonspor and Besiktas JK 1-3 and 2-3 respectively so they have no fear when playing a big side and they know how to take their chances. The aerial prowess of Makukula coupled with the pace of Promise and Simpson is a lethal counter-attacking weapon and I’ll be surprised to see Gala not suffer that today.

Hagi is working on Gala to make them a more “average” side in that they can score from set pieces etc. instead of just relying on their scare flair players so he’ll yield success at somepoint, I’m sure. However, I’ve not seen enough from the hosts to suggest that they’ll contribute a composed and assured display against a vibrant Manisaspor side today so both sides to score is my call as the odds are decidedly generous and they’re also better than over 2.5 goals!

Verdict: Both sides to score at 7/10.

Real Esppor Club vs Caracas – home win at evens.

You’ve got to love Real Esppor Club here! I doubt many of you follow Venezuelan football much but these guys were only promoted last season. They decided they wanted to be the top dog in Venezuela and decided that the best way to do that was to buy the best players of the best clubs, which they did, and it’s working very well indeed for them! They’ve not only won ten out of twelve games in the Primera Division but winning five out of seven on the road in Venezuela is virtually unheard of and impressively demonstrates the strength of the side that they’ve become. As far as their home record goes, Esppor have won five out of five on their own turf whilst averaging scoring nearly three goals per home game and although they’re entertaining the big side in Venezuela tonight – Caracas – I still fancy them to cause an upset. When Esppor plundered “the big three” in Venezuela for players, they took the largest number of players from Caracas – attacker Castellin, midfielder Pinago, and goalkeeper Toyo – so they know what they’re up against tonight and may have some “inside information” to help them deal with their more illustrious visitors. Esppor also poached their star striker Casseres from Deportivo Petare and he’s been in excellent form for the hosts this season and will no doubt be instrumental if they do overcome their big neighbours. Caracas are still a hard side to beat but they’ve been rather poor lately, losing three out of their last four games in all competitions, the most recent of which was a home game in the Primera Division against Aragua. With that in mind and the fact that Esppor are playing the best football of their entire existance, the home win at evens looks particularly tempting tonight, especially as the hosts have some players keen to take revenge on their old club.

Verdict: Real Esppor Club to win at evens.
