Today’s secondary featured game is the Cypriot game between APOEL Nicosia and Anorthosis Famagusta.
Over the years, Anorthosis have been a tough nut to crack because they’ve been a good side. I think it’s fair to say that they’ve never really been as good since Ketsbaia left for Olympiakos Piraeus but they’re still a decent side. However, they’re vulnerable at the back and they don’t play like a big side anymore, in my view. They can still beat the lower sides in the division but against the likes of APOEL and Omonia, they just look out of their depth, which is a bit of a shame, really.
APOEL have rapidly become the best side in Cyprus, in my view, especially with Omonia’s reported financial issues. They play good football and always seem to produce goals from somewhere when they need them. They defend solidly as a unit and have already demonstrated just how tough they are to face in the UEFA Champions League this season, managing to take draws from trips to face Shakhtar Donetsk and Porto respectively. APOEL seem to dominate games effortlessly and manage to grind out wins, even when not playing well, so I have to fancy them here.
Anorthosis could spring a surprise here but I think it’s unlikely. Their best days are behind them, as ten-man Aris Limassol proved recently, whereas APOEL just seem to be getting better and better. For me, there’s value on the home win at 10/11.
Verdict: APOEL Nicosia to win at 10/11.
