Today’s secondary featured game is the Gambrinus Liga game between Slovacko and Viktoria Plzen.
Hosts Slovacko have had a good start to their Gambrinus Liga campaign, already claiming four wins from nine games and losing just three times along the way. Atypically, that could be viewed as a fairly average record but in comparison to the level of their squad, I rate that as a good record. Slovacko do sometimes play some nice football at home, which makes them look a lot more dangerous than they actually are. Quality-wise, this side still isn’t particularly good, in my view. They’re relying heavily on towering Libor Dosek up front to provide an outlet in attack, which isn’t always a wise idea. Their midfield is good, to their credit – Kordula brings great experience whilst emerging talent Pavelka and especially Valenta do the damage. Defensively, contrary to their misleading record, this side is not assured at the back but you can’t expect much from a side that basically paid to be in the Gambrinus Liga in the first place anyway!
Three clean sheets from four home games makes this game look harder than it is, in my view. You can observe that Slovacko have only conceded in one of those games or you can observe that they concede against quality more often than not with only Jablonec failing to register a goal against Slovacko out of the “big sides” and let’s be straight here – Viktoria Plzen are more than good enough to score here. I still feel that they’re lacking a proper striker after the departure of Jan Rezek but their midfield is outstanding and I expect that to show today as midfield is Slovacko’s only strength; if Plzen outplay them there than Slovacko are going to lose, in my view.
Plzen have had their fair share of unlucky games so far this season, often dominating games without taking their chances. However, I can’t pass up on this opportunity to take Plzen to win at such good odds against a side playing above their ability right now so my call is the away win at evens.
Verdict: Viktoria Plzen to win at evens.
