Getafe vs Malaga

Free

Today’s featured game is the Primera Liga encounter between Getafe and Malaga. Getafe are traditionally strong at home and Malaga generally struggle to stay in the division so there’s no prizes for guessing which way I’m leaning here!

A 2-2 draw at Deportivo on monday night was a respectable result for the Madrid-based outfit and now takes their tally to six goals in three Primera Liga games, two of which were away from home. Getafe have also been competing on the European front too, overcoming OB Odense of Denmark to progress to the next round of the UEFA Europa League. Getafe have therefore played two home games in all competitions and have won both games in fairly comfortable fashion with goals generally easy to come by for Getafe. Getafe lost players over the summer such as Roberto Soldado to Valencia CF, Pedro Leon to Real Madrid, and Kepa to Recreativo de Huelva. However, Getafe replaced those players rather well, in my opinion, by signing Real Zaragoza strikers Javier Arizmendi and Adrian Colunga, as well as Borja from Real Valladolid and Mosquera from Almeria in midfield. It’ll take some time for their new players to adjust but Getafe should be able to maintain the same level of display as they indicated last year. Getafe won eleven out of nineteen at home last season whilst losing just four times so their home strength is pretty undeniable, although their defending isn’t always as good as it should be.

However, that’s where Malaga enter the frame. They can be tricky customers on their day but the heartbreaker for their fans was Portuguese midfielder Duda’s injury, which basically means he misses a lot of games for Malaga. He is a massively important part of this team from an attacking perspective and they frankly don’t have anyone capable of replacing him. Their attackers are either too young or too ineffectual in general and overall, this side suddenly looks very short on actual ability. They lost Valdo, Obinna, and Munua over the summer and haven’t really brought in adequate replacements – just some “maybe” players, really. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that Malaga have struggled this year, leaking a horrendous eight goals in three games this season, losing twice and winning once. Their defence looks very easy to break down and although Malaga are capable of scoring goals, they tend to ship a lot more than they score, which is not the kind of record to take to Getafe.

Malaga have lost their last two visits to Getafe consecutively and I don’t see that changing tonight either, not with Duda injured. Malaga aren’t usually a walkover side but their defending at times is abysmal and a potent and well-organised Getafe side could and really should take advantage of that fact by winning tonight at decent odds of 3/4.

Verdict: Getafe to win at 3/4.
