Also, if you don’t watch this video in honour of the superb Icelandic league, which is back in action soon, then it’s quite simply your own time that you’re wasting!

Today’s secondary featured game is the Allsvenskan match between heavyweights Helsingborg and Elfsborg Boras. Both sides started their respective campaigns with a win so both bring momentum into this game.

However, I’m going to be siding with giants Helsingborg for this encounter today. Why? Well, they’ve got virtually the same side as last year but a year more experienced. That’s especially important in attack with promising strike duo Gerndt and Jonsson often leading the line with their outstanding potential Those two are only lacking in a lot of experience now, although Gerndt played a lot of Allsvenskan football last season so he’s considerably more advanced than his strike partner. Either way, with the dogged tenacity of Mahlangu behind them and the experience of the likes of Erik Edman at full-back and Christoffer Andersson in midfield, the hosts look well-placed for their expected title push this year, especially if their composed 0-1 victory in difficult conditions at Mjallby Solvesborg on the opening day of the season was anything to go by.

Elfsborg Boras make this decision easier for me today, however, because they hate playing on natural grass due to the Boras Arena having artificial turf. Additionally, Elfsborg Boras sold arguably the Allsvenskan’s best striker of last season Denni Avdic to Werder Bremen and although they have signed replacements in ex-Fulham target man David Elm and pacey Lasse Nilsson, they just don’t bring the same level of potency that Avdic did, in my view. It didn’t show during their 2-1 win against Hacken Goteborg lately but to be fair, it wouldn’t have had to with the visitors in that game simply sitting back and trying to defend their hard-fought lead, which was stupid as there’s only going to be one winner at the Boras Arena if that’s going to be your tactical approach to an away game there! Elfsborg weren’t particularly special in that game and didn’t need to be as a result of Hacken’s unadventurous display but I think we’ll see Elfsborg get a real test today and it’s in games like these where you need your big players and although Elfsborg still have some very good players – especially playmaker Svensson – they just don’t make me fear them without Avdic, especially on natural grass.

Therefore, my call is the home win today. Helsingborg are always strong at home and Elfsborg are often susceptible away from home. Helsinborg have won this exact fixture for two seasons in a row now, winning two out of the last three meetings between these two sides, too. These games tend to involve goals and this one shouldn’t be an exception but for me, the hosts have more firepower and it should show in this game.

Team news – Helsingborg miss Patronen and Boaouzan whereas Elfsborg Boras miss Keene and Jon Jonsson.

Verdict: Helsingborg to win at 11/10.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Minior Pernik vs Levski Sofia – away win at 4/5.

Ok, so Levski Sofia had a draining game mid-week against rivals Litex Lovech in the Bulgarian Cup, eventually losing out on penalties. Is that the sole reason that Levski are priced at 4/5, though? They’re a much better side than Minior Pernik and I’m surprised that they’re not shorter to win this game. They’ve beaten Minior Pernik for eight out of their last nine meetings at either ground with Levski winning four consecutive visits here. The hosts do know how to find the net but the visitors do too with striker Dembele being one of the most sought-after in Eastern Europe and playmaker Tasevski being a nightmare to play against on his day. Minior Pernik are a decent side; don’t get me wrong. However, Levski are head and shoulders above them and as they must keep winning to keep the pressure on Litex Lovech in the A PFG, I’m struggling to see why there are such generous odds available on the away win here. Minior Pernik are on a good run of form, admittedly, and that has been taken into consideration here. However, backing by far the superior of these two sides at odds of 4/5 appeals to me today.

Verdict: Levski Sofia to win at 4/5.

Montana vs Lokomotiv Plovdiv – away win at 21/20.

Montana’s home record in the A PFG shows that they’re hard to beat, which is perfectly true. They’re almost like a slightly less effectual version of Beroe but with less experience and power. However, what Montana’s home record does show in abundance is that they know their limits. Yes, they’ve only lost three times at home this season but who were those defeats against? Litex Lovech, Levski Sofia, and Lokomotiv Sofia respectively. What a surprise(!) Yes, those losses were against some of the best clubs in Bulgaria (or in Lokomotiv’s case, they were at the time!) and all took place without the hosts scoring a goal. Lokomotiv Plovdiv are seeking to become one of those big sides and this is the type of game that they have to win in order to get close to the leading lights of Bulgarian football. Lokomotiv have some good financial backing and some talented players so they do need to be taken seriously here. They’ve got a solid enough defence to keep defensive Montana out here and that proved instrumental for the other sides that have won here. Attack-wise – they definitely need to score more away from home as that’s been their Achilles heel this season.

However, they’re absolutely good enough to win at Montana as they demonstrated when they won at Levski Sofia so I think the away win is worth a shot at 21/20 today.

Verdict: Lokomotiv Plovdiv to win at 21/20.

Litex Lovech vs CSKA Sofia – home win at evens.

Litex had a draining game with CSKA Sofia’s bitter rivals Levski Sofia mid-week in the Bulgarian Cup but emerged triumphantly after a penalty shootout victory. Now the A PFG leaders can resume their focus on the title, which is very much within their reach with an eight-point gap separating themselves from the chasing Levski Sofia with just ten A PFG games remaining. Litex have already won nine out of ten home games this season whilst averaging scoring nearly two goals per home game and conceding less than a goal per every two home games so you can see how strong Litex truly are. Litex have beaten CSKA Sofia for two consecutive years at home, each of which was without conceding a goal and a similar scenario today wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. Litex Lovech are a very strong side and giants CSKA Sofia should find that out by the end of the day.

CSKA Sofia have started to rebuild after a terrible start to their A PFG campaign and they’ve even been winning lately. However, the fact that cannot be avoided is that they lack firepower with the majority of their attacking threat coming from young Spas Delev. Nobody else steps up to the plate like he does and against a defensively-strong Litex Lovech, you get the impression that CSKA Sofia won’t score here as they just don’t have the firepower. I’d be a fool to write CSKA off as they’re one of the biggest clubs in Bulgaria and with that kind of support behind them, anything is possible.

However, odds of evens on the home win appeal to me massively here. I don’t expect to see many goals in this game but I do expect to see a Litex win so that’s my call for this game.

Verdict: Litex Lovech to win at evens.

Hradec Kralove vs Banik Ostrava – home win at 7/5.

Newly-promoted Hradec Kralove have been surprisingly strong at home this season with just one defeat in eleven Gambrinus Liga home games and I expec that the continue today as they bid to beat the drop. They’ve already clocked up five home wins this season and having suffered just one defeat in their last four games, it’s easy to see that they’ll bring momentum into this game, especially after such a dominant display at fallen giants Slavia Prague. Hradec Kralove have won back-to-back home games since returning from the winter break and with a sellout crowd expected today for the hosts, a third consecutive win wouldn’t surprise me here.

Banik Ostrava are obviously the bigger of these two sides but that counts for very little here as they simply don’t score goals. They’re quite assured defensively when they feel inclined to be but the fact that they’ve scored just one goal in five games since returning from the winter break speaks volumes. Understandably, Banik have lost three of those games and worryingly find themselve sliding into the relegation battle along with today’s hosts Hradec Kralove. Although Banik Ostrava are a decent side for preventing opponents beating them, they’re no longer in a position where they can just do that – they need to push for victories and I just don’t see them having the firepower to get one – not here, at least!

For me, Hradec Kralove are priced far too long at 7/5 when you consider the magnitude of this game and how poor Banik are in front of goal and thus my call is the home win here.

Verdict: Hradec Kralove to win at 7/5.

Vestjaelland vs AGF Aarhus – away win at evens.

Simply put – AGF are better than Vestjaelland. AGF are the best side in the Danish Division 1, for my money, and with the likes of Feilharber returning to their squad today, I find it very hard to overlook the away win here. True, Vestjaelland have only lost three home games this season but it’s worth noting that two of those games were against the only really difficult opponents that they’ve faced this season – HB Koge and AB Copenhagen respectively – so you can see a pattern emerging. With AGF only missing Petersen for this game and with such a good squad of players available to them, the away win appeals to me at evens.

Team news – AGF Aarhus miss Stephan Petersen.

Verdict: AGF Aarhus to win at evens.

Fiorentina vs AC Milan – both sides to score at 10/11.

Wow, surely not a Serie A game today that isn’t fixed? It sure looks that way!

Why both sides to score? Fiorentina have looked good in these last couple of months and although Romanian attacker Mutu is absent, striker Gilardino will no doubt be fighting his own players off to register a goal against his former club today and given the support he’ll get from the likes of Montolivo, I certainly wouldn’t bet against him doing so. They’ve scored in nine out of their last ten games and have conceded in six of them so the foundation for this bet is there for all to see, especially as they enter this game on the back of two consecutive 2-2 draws!

Visitors AC Milan will be the popular pick for people as ever, no doubt. I’m not interested in the 1×2 market here though – there’s far too many important players out for AC Milan. The reliance on Robinho and Ibrahimovic will be quite large today with no Cassano, Pato, or Inzaghi. However, Fiorentina’s defence is not the most stable and I’m sure that AC Milan will shatter it at somepoint, even without the creative brilliance of Andrea Pirlo in midifeld. However, I can’t see AC Milan controlling this game properly with so many central midfielders missing the game so I think that the Viola will have a strong say in the outcome of this game, just as much as the Rossoneri will.

Therefore, my call is the logical one of backing both sides to score as both look likely to score here, as long as AC Milan’s Nesta/Silva partnership can be broken.

Team news – Fiorentina miss Mutu and Jovetic whilst having doubts over Frey and Behrami whereas AC Milan miss Gattuso, Ambrosini, Inzaghi, Bonera, Cassano, and Jankulovski whilst having doubts over Van Bommel, Abbiati, Pirlo, and Pato.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 10/11.

Zenit St.Petersburg vs CSKA Moscow – home win at 6/5.

I’ve not heard any team news for this game so be a tad careful here.

However, I can’t overlook Zenit at 6/5; they’re simply a better side than CSKA nowadays. CSKA really lack in front of goal and despite the smart finish from Necid during their last game against FK Krasnodar, they still ended up drawing the game 1-1 due to a lack of firepower. What you tend to find with CSKA is that they’re a big club with big names but they’re all talk; they rarely produce the goods on the field, often needing amorous Brazilian striker Vagner Love to bail them out, when he feels inclined to do so. CSKA just don’t concern me any more though – they dominated the first-half against FK Krasnodar last match but failed to take their chances, gave a stupid goal away, and it’s cost them two points. That’s the kind of game I envision Zenit winning because they have better players, more varied options, and much more experience in their team. Zenit have already beaten CSKA Moscow in the Russian Super Cup Final earlier this season and I wouldn’t be surprised to see them win this game too as they have more firepower, more creativity, and are better in defence. Therefore, my call is for Zenit to win this game at 6/5, just as they have done for three out of their last four meetings with CSKA.

Verdict: Zenit St.Petersburg to win at 6/5.

Valencia CF vs Villarreal CF – lay Valencia CF at 4/5.

Valenciana derbies aren’t my favourite to get involved in but I genuinely feel that Villarreal CF are edging past Valencia CF from a quality perspective so I have to take a shot here.

Valencia are still a massive name on the global stage but let’s face it – they’re losing their stars, year by year, and they’re starting to look a bit average. The likes of Mata, Joaquin, and Pablo Hernandez are dynamite on their day and can steer this side to win against just about anyone. However, you can see that the mere aspirations of Valencia have been lowered when you consider that they’ve settled for Soldado and Aduriz in attack to replace David Villa. Both are hard-working and experienced Primera Liga strikers but they’re not world-class; they’re not even close! Valencia sold the brilliant David Silva to Manchester City and what have they done to replace him? Nothing. They’ve put more reliance on Mata’s displays and hoped it’d work out, which it partially has, fortuitously. My point is how long can they keep doing this for? Their financial problems are not improving; they’re not making enough money to sustain being a big club and it’s going to cost them ultimately.

Villarreal have started to ease into being the best team in Valenciana in recent years with just one defeat to their more illustrious local rivals in their last ten meetings at either ground. They drew 0-0 at the Mestalla earlier this season in the Copa del Rey, winning the return leg 4-2. Villarreal just don’t fear Valencia anymore and I don’t see why they should, either. Villarreal enter this game on the back of a 5-1 battering of Twente Enschede of the Netherlands so morale is high and there’s no real reason to rest players here as it’ll take a mammoth effort for Twente to turn the tie around now. Villarreal’s away record isn’t particularly great this season but they’re still a very potent side with deadly duo Nilmar and Rossi in attack. Unfortuantely, Villarreal still miss Senna for this game and his experience will be a big blow for them today. However, the tricky Cazorla is available in midfield and him coupled with Valero and Cani should make Valencia work hard to keep them at bay today. The absence of number one goalkeeper Lopez could cost Villarreal as derbies are tense affairs and new players can often make mistakes. I’m not going to let it affect my tip here, however, as I see Villarreal concerning the hosts more than the other way around, especially with Valencia missing full-back Miguel and central defender Navarro for this game.

Valencia have failed to score for three consecutive home games now, drawing once and losing twice along the way. Villarreal may not travel well but they don’t need to play well to prevent Valencia from winning this game, based on the afore-mentioned statistics. Derbies are never as straightforward as they seem; we all know that. However, for me there’s good value in laying an overrated Valencia side today against a vibrant Villarreal side.

Team news – Valencia CF miss Miguel, Navarro, Vicente, Albelda, and Chori whereas Villarreal CF miss Senna and Lopez.

Verdict: Lay Valencia CF at 4/5.
