Jaro Pietarsaari vs AC Oulu
FreeSorry guys – not had a lot of time to do this update, hence the late posting and fairly brief previews. If you have any questions then post them and I’ll respond later on today when I have more time.
My featured game today is in the Veikkausliiga and features Jaro Pietarsaari and AC Oulu. It’s the last game of the season for both sides and both sides still have something to play for so we should see an interesting game here.
I still think the bookies have priced the game incorrectly, however. Jaro aren’t world-beaters; they’ve partially lived up to their pre-season label of “dark horses” in the Veikkausliiga title race but far too late for it to matter domestically. A somewhat bizarre Veikkausliiga season leaves them on the brink of European football, however, so they’ll be motivated today. Jaro won at AC Oulu earlier this season and with four wins, one draw, and just one defeat from their past six home games, Jaro do need to be taken seriously here. They’ve lost back-to-back games, which is a tad concerning at this stage of this season, although I’d hasten to point out that they were difficult encounters against a superior TPS Turku and during a trip to KuPS Kuopio, which has been the bane for better sides than Jaro this season. Jaro still have great goalscoring potential and a very good manager and although there’s still a lot of work to be done for the hosts to be considered a consistent force, they’re still a good side and should show it today. It helps my cause that AC Oulu have to attack here, something which they don’t do well, which leaves their defence open to doing something they don’t do very well too – defending. Oulu’s reaction to being drawn into the expected relegation race was to…crumble and die. They’ve lost three out of their last four games, drawing the other encounter, and shipping ten goals along the way, five of which were against fellow relegation rivals! They are not a good side and although the northerners have plenty of grit, they tend to lack rather worryingly on the talent front as I mentioned pre-season. They don’t travel well either as their record of seven defeats in twelve away games indicates all too well this season. With morale dropping and relegation a very real possibility, this AC Oulu side could and should be very afraid of a superior and frankly more potent host today.
The predominant reason that I think the bookies have priced this game incorrectly, however, is motivation. Looking at the table, you’d have to expect Jaro to not be bothered about this game, which is wrong. As TPS Turku won the Suomen Cup, they qualify for the UEFA Europa League already, which means that the final spot is still available for both FC Honka Espoo and Jaro Pietarsaari. Honka have been terrible lately and anything but a win against a good Inter Turku side today would condemn them to a season without European football. Jaro still have to win to pass their rivals but they know that they can do so against their inferior visitors today so why not? Jaro boast a far better attack than AC Oulu and with the defensive-minded visitors needing to take points here to try and stave off the threat of relegation, we should see an open game and if that happens, Jaro should win this game easily. Odds of 11/10 look too generous for Jaro winning this game today, in my opinion!
Verdict: Jaro Pietarsaari to win at 11/10.
Saturday’s Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Atletico Nacional de Medellin vs Envigado – both sides to score at evens.
Atletico Nacional are playing a bit better than they actually are this season but I like that they are – they’re probably my favourite Colombian side – so it’s good to see them competing amongst the big boys again, as they always used to. However, the Colombian F.A. has hilariously handed them their third game in seven days and this side is not big enough for squad depth so they’re going to be tired. They’re a mechanical side at home, winning by narrow margins without conceding but their packed fixture list has left them tired and susceptible in defence. They’ve now conceded for five consecutive games, scoring in four of those games, and they’ve also conceded in four consecutive home games in all competitions whilst scoring in each of those games. Envigado are a pretty terrible side but even they should be able to capitalise against their tired hosts today. Interestingly, they’ve scored on each of their last four visits here, as well as conceding in each game, so I like this bet quite a lot tonight. I was tempted to give Envigado +1.5 but they’re a poor side at the best of times so I think the value is in both sides scoring tonight, especially as Envigado have started scoring of late, albeit with similar results as before.
Verdict: Both sides to score at evens.
Mlada Boleslav vs Viktoria Plzen – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
A lot of people like the away win here; I don’t. The odds are good but they’re good for a reason – Mlada Boleslav are not an easy side to face away from home. They’re one of the best goalscoring sides in the Gambrinus Liga, in my opinion, and have shown it countless times at home already this season. Boleslav are unbeaten at home with four wins and two draws so Plzen will do very well to take three points here. The table shows Viktoria Plzen in a very favourable light but their form can’t last forever. Don’t lose sight of the fact that as good as this side actually is, they’re still over-achieving quite heavily and they will come back down to earth with a bang at somepoint. Plzen haven’t won at Boleslav since 2002 and I don’t think that’ll change today. However, rather than boldly back the 1×2 markets, I’m going to shy away from that and focus on goals as that is the trademark of both sides – scoring goals! Four out of Mlada’s last five home games have gone over 2.5 goals and three out of Plzen’s last five away games in all competitions have gone over 2.5 goals. Boleslav average scoring over two goals per home game and Plzen share that record away from home so bluntly, I expect a lot of goals here, especially as the hosts simply cannot defend!
If I was to go near the 1×2 market then I’d take Plzen but not below 9/5 – the odds of 3/2 given on the away win look a trap to me. Anything can happen in this game but for me, there should be plenty of goals either way so my call is over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
Padova vs Pescara – home win at evens.
Padova have a good side this year and are always strong at home. Pescara are still new to Serie B and although they’re defending well, they’re not attacking particularly well, especially away from home. I don’t think Padova will go mad here and win by a lot of goals but they have a superior side and are always dangerous at home as they proved last season, not to mention their games this season, so I consider the odds on the home win a bit generous here.
Verdict: Padova to win at evens.
FK Ventspils vs Liepajas Metalurgs – home win at evens.
I think the bookies have fucked up the Virsliga odds again just as they did yesterday. Ventspils and Skonto Riga are the daddies in this league – Liepajas have fallen away over the past twelve months and it’s starting to show. Skonto’s defeat at home to Daugava yesterday gives Ventspils as much motivation as they could possibly require to win this game and close the gap so I expect them to go all-out attack here. Ventspils don’t have a good head-to-head record against Liepajas Metalurgs but I’d argue that the gap hasn’t been bigger than it is now in recent years. Ventspils have shown a steely resolve of late that I quite enjoy seeing in them and their win at Daugava illustrated that well. Liepajas destroyed Jauniba last match but struggled against Banga Gargzdai and Daugava Daugavpils in their previous two games, failing to score in both encounters. Liepajas don’t like well-organised defences but that’s what they’re up against today. Frankly, I expect the superior hosts to win this one today with the momentum and motivation advantage so I think evens on the Ventspils win looks appealing for this one today.
Verdict: FK Ventspils to win at evens.
Gornik Leczna vs Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biala – home win with draw no bet at 10/11.
Leczna is not an easy away game as three wins, one draw, and just one defeat from five Liga 1 home games this season indicates and league leaders Podbeskidzie may be the latest side to discover that today. You see, Gornik Leczna’s non-playing staff have decided to start fining players that don’t play well. This is either going to galvanise the players or tear them apart so there is a risk here but I’m taking the risky that it will galvanise them. Why? Well, the board have been good enough to remain confidential about who those players are so there shouldn’t be too much upset but the hosts have to be encouraged that the visitors aren’t bringing any fans to this game due to a substantial lack of interest, as the club announced. Therefore, the home fans can have a big influence here and as if this ground wasn’t difficult enough to visit already! Leczna aren’t as good as their visitors, admittedly, but I don’t see them losing this one today with the possibility of being fined at stake and with their home rans roaring them on so I think the odds of 10/11 on the home win with draw no bet look interesting today.
Verdict: Gornik Leczna to win with draw no bet at 10/11.
Sibir Novosibirsk vs Spartak Moscow – no bet
Allegedly, this game is a fixed away win so I’d recommend avoiding betting on this game, especially as half the sources that say that games are fixed are trying to generate better odds for themselves rather than assist other punters.
Spartak Nalchik vs Tom Tomsk – no bet
Allegedly, this game is a fixed home win so I’d recommend avoiding betting on this game, especially as half the sources that say that games are fixed are trying to generate better odds for themselves rather than assist other punters.
Zorya Lugansk vs Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih – draw at 2/1.
Zorya Lugansk have drawn more home games than anyone in the Ukrainian Premier League and Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih have drawn more away games than anyone else in the Ukrainian Premier League. I don’t like backing draws but if there’s a draw today then this game has to be given consideration despite the disheartening head-to-head record showing no draws between these two sides for a long time! Zorya are marginally better than Kryvbas, in my opinion, although I attribute that to their use of Shakhtar Donetsk players on loan rather than their actual level of ability. However, both sides look well-placed to draw this one and the odds are good enough to take a shot at.
Verdict: Draw at 2/1.
