Today’s free tip is in the French Ligue 1 encounter between Toulouse and Dijon FCO. Initially, I was going to leave this one along, but having seen the respective squads for this encounter, I almost feel compelled to back goals here.

Dijon FCO contributing to a high-scoring game is nothing unusual. They’ve been a very positive team since being promoted from Ligue 2, and have caused surprises on plenty of occasions with their boldness and effectiveness in front of goal. However, the trouble Dijon FCO have had all season long is keeping teams out. They don’t work very hard at it, and they really aren’t very good at it anyway. That particular problem has been enhanced today by the absence of defenders Rufli and Chafik.

I would never suggest that Dijon FCO would enter a game defensively anyway; it’s simply not their style. Given the tense state of things in the the Ligue 1 relegation battle, though, only a win guarantees them safety; anything else may see them relegated, or even in the relegation play-off. Therefore, I really don’t expect to see a change to Dijon FCO’s attacking style. Scoring goals is what they’re good at; it’s only logical they should stick to it. Diony and Tavares have caused their opponents a lot of problems this season, particularly the Cape Verde Islands international, and with Sammaritano and Lees Melou supporting them, it’s fair to say that Dijon FCO have a decent attack. It’s their collective efforts and strength as a team that wins them games, though. They’ve got unbelievable spirit, and you’re a braver man than I am if you oppose them with that in mind, particularly against a Toulouse team that have nothing to play for.

Indeed, Dijon FCO have been handed a real lifeline by Toulouse because of their hosts’ absentees. Promising shot-stopper Lafont is out, as is key centre-back Diop. Other regulars that are out include Adou and Blin, so Toulouse have some really important absentees for this one. I’d normally trust them to do their “usual” thing at home by defending well, working hard, and breaking with tremendous pace. They can still break well with Toivonen and Braithwaite leading their attacks, but I find it really hard to imagine Toulouse keeping any Ligue 1 team out without Adou, Lafont, and Diop in their squad.

Toulouse remain the better and more experienced of these two teams. Furthermore, they have the capacity to play different styles, whereas Dijon FCO don’t. However, they’ve not played well for weeks now, and they’re missing some crucial players tonight, so why should desperate Dijon FCO be doubted here? Toulouse have lost all interest in this campaign. The only thing I’ll say in their favour is that being attacked really, really suits Toulouse because of how good they are at counter-attacking. Other than that, though, plucky Dijon FCO have a really good chance to take their relegation survival into their own hands by winning here rather than relying on other teams to bail them out. Dijon FCO have no reason to fear Toulouse as long as they do what they do best.

Still, I won’t be getting involved in the 1×2 market. Dijon FCO are good enough to win here, but Toulouse are good enough on the break to do some real damage. Toulouse may not win as many as they’d like, but they’re a pain to actually beat. Dijon FCO need to go for the jugular here, though, particularly as they tend to concede in every game they play in. Therefore, I believe there’s value to be found in taking over 3 goals, whether it’s because Toulouse are clinical on the break or whether it’s because Dijon FCO put on a heroic display. I can only see this one being open and goal-filled.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 6/5.
