Lorient vs Saint-Etienne

Free

Today’s featured game is the Ligue 2 encounter between Lorient and Saint-Etienne. Lorient have been consistently strong in Ligue 1 this year at home and this has catapulted them into ninth place. Visitors Saint-Etienne have had various issues this year, particularly in attack, but look to have done just enough to stay in Ligue 1 this year.

Lorient have already won seven out of fourteen home games this season whilst losing only twice. They average scoring nearly two goals per game whilst conceding just over a goal per game on average. Aside from a disappointing defeat at Boulogne last match, Lorient have played well lately, drawing their previous away game at Olympique de Marseille and going unbeaten in their last three home games in Ligue 1, winning their last two consecutively without conceding a goal. Ironically, it’s Lorient’s defence that has earned them points of late with just three goals leaked in their last four Ligue 1 games, which makes a change as it’s usually their reliable potency that bails the club out! Either way, Lorient bring momentum into this game and are solid at home so should produce a good display today.

Saint-Etienne have become more competent of late but still have big issues scoring goals. They’ve drawn their last three Ligue 1 games – two at home against LOSC Lille and AS Nancy-Lorraine respectively – and one away to Olympique Lyonnais. During those games, Saint-Etienne may have only conceded twice but they’ve only scored twice too and this is the time of the year that they need points. They look secure with a six-point gap between themselves and the drop zone but ths sides below them are fighting well and are obtaining more points than you’d expect so they need to be picking up more points, really! Saint-Etienne have lost three out of their last four away games in Ligue 1, taking their tally to nine defeats in fourteen away games, which shows why they are where they are in Ligue 1 currently! They average conceding nearly two goals per away game whilst barely managing to score a goal per every two away games. Interestingly, Saint-Etienne have never won at Lorient in any competition so this is a difficult palce for them to travel to, particularly having lost three out of their last four games at either ground against Lorient, let alone here!

There isn’t as much quality difference between these two as the table suggests – just a couple of good finishers and a bit of confidence. However, Lorient are strong at home and have proven so both throughout the season, in recent times, and in general. Although Saint-Etienne aren’t conceding many, they’re not scoring many either so look prone to losing here as they have done on the road just about anywhere this season. An early away goal could be fatal but I expect Lorient to do the job today at generous odds.

Verdict: Lorient to win at evens

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Chacarita Juniors vs Boca Juniors – away win at 6/5.

Now this is a strange one! Chacarita Juniors have played five home games in the Primera Division this season and have lost four of them, winning just once. This record does back up how lowly I think of tonight’s hostss, really! They’re in this position because they concede too easily and don’t score enough goals, which is always a fatal combination. Chacarita Juniors have lost their last four games consecutively, two of which have been home defeats and both of which included a grand total of zero goals for the hosts. They’re looking poor and bereft of confidence currently and look likely to struggle tonight.

Visitors Boca Juniors have played five away games this season but haven’t won any of them, remarkably. I know Boca are in a transitional period but there’s still a good number of sides that they’re better than! However, that statistic does do Boca some injustice as they have notched up nine goals during those five away games, a record bettered only by Arsenal de Sarandi. During their five away games, they’ve pulled off an epic 4-4 draw at Velez Sarsfield and a 1-1 draw at in-form Godoy Cruz de Mendoza so I do feel that the statistics are a tad misleading here. Boca won their last game a few days ago against bitter rivals River Plate in “El Clasico”, a result which is sure to have buoyed them. That momentum fused with their potency looks set to overrun Chacarita Juniors tonight and even Boca’s leaky defence on the road doesn’t concern me tonight because they’re just too good for their goal-shy hosts.

Verdict: Boca Juniors to win at 6/5.

Envigado vs Independiente Medellin – home win at 11/10.

Hosts Envigado have been solid at home in the Primera A so far in their current campaign with three victories in four games, drawing the other encounter. Envigado have only conceded one goal during that time so defence is their backbone for success. Envigado don’t score many goals as the record of five goals scored in four games illustrates well. They’re a tough side to break down in general which is why they’re unbeaten in five Primera A games – a tough record in Colombia as most sides lose the majority of their away games – so I’ve no doubts that Envigado will give Independiente Medellin a rough ride tonight. Envigado have even claimed a draw at high-flying Real Cartagena in recent times so they’re a capable side on their day. Envigado have never lost at home to Independiente Medellin and have won their last two home games against tonight’s opponents in all competitions so are looking good ahead of tonight’s games.

Independiente Medellin are one of the better sides in Colombia but will be entering this game after a lengthy trip south to Uruguay in the Copa Libertadores just three days ago. Independiente Medellin will be tired from this trip – no question. They tend to be successful by being strong defensively and the fact that they’ve only conceded six goals in eight Primera A games this season illustrates that point perfectly. Independiente Medellin have won twice on the road in their four Primera A away games this season but have experienced their only defeat of their Primera A campaign on the road too. Independiente Medellin have drawn both of their last two Primera A games so are losing some of their early season momentum which could prove pivotal tonight. Independiente Medellin don’t score many on the road and despite being the better team would no doubt take a point from this game given chance as this trip has been their downfall many times.

I’m anticipating a low-scoring game between these two compact sides and most likely a lot of cards given that this is a battling encounter in Colombia – enough said! However, Envigado are good at home, they’ve got a good home record against Independiente Medellin, and their visitors are tired from a long trip. I think the odds represent good value for a home win tonight with all of the above in mind.

Verdict: Envigado to win at 11/10.

Slovacko vs Ceske Budejovice – home win at 11/10.

Little Slovacko have stunned everyone with recent displays, particularly myself! They gained a fairly credible draw at fellow relegation battlers Bohemians Prague, they annihlated giants Slavia Prague 3-1, and then very nearly took three points from league leaders Teplice with only two late goals undoing their hard work. Slovacko’s confidence is high as a result and it’s showing with the hosts now scoring goals frequently – six goals in three games, in fact. I’m not going to lie to you here – I really don’t rate Slovacko as a side but a side with momentum and potency will cause any side problems and that’s what I expect them to do today. They need three points to continue their climb away from the drop zone and they’re more than capable of getting them today against fellow relegation-threatened Ceske Budejovice.

I usually feel quite sorry for Ceske Budejovice as they’re not a particularly bad side; they just don’t score goals. Naturally, as the chain reaction goes, no goals leads to lack of confidence, lack of confidence leads to errors in the side, and errors in the side lead to defeats – you all know how it goes. Ceske Budejovice have already lost six times in ten away games in the Gambrinus Liga this season and are one of the bigger conceding sides in the division away from home with an average of nearly two goals conceded per away game. That said, Ceske Budejovice have played quite well of late with no defeats in three consecutive games, drawing twice at home and even winning at massively in-form Banik Ostrava, a real hit-and-run performance! They’ve drawn two poor games with out-of-form Slovan Liberec and a dismal Bohemians 1905 so Ceske’s goal-shy displays are still hamstrining today’s visitors.

This should be quite a good game but with few chances as both sides will battle hard but have little natural ability in attack. However, Slovacko are looking the better of the two currently as they are scoring goals – two per game on average at the moment – and have won four out of ten home games already this season so should have enough to win today. One thing is for sure here – the first goal should really spell out whether this bet will be successful or not!

Verdict: Slovacko to win at 11/10.

Sparta Prague vs Brno – lay Sparta Prague at 8/5.

I’m not sure how the bookies rate Sparta Prague at 2/5 when they’ve only won half of their home games in the Gambrinus Liga this season but then again I’m not a bookmaker! Sparta Prague are unquestionably the bigger of these two sides and are a very capable side but they’ve lost some of their ability over summer and their displays this season have been…well, average, by their standards. They’ve just not got that something special that sees them usually about ten points clear of other Czech sides by this time of the season, which is ironically the same problem as bitter rivals Slavia Prague have. Sparta Prague rarely concede at home, which is very fortunate because they’re not scoring many there either. Sparta Prague have won three out of five games since returning from the winter break but their three wins have been against out-of-form sides and their two draws have come against some of the more resilient sides in the division i.e. Marila Pribram, Jablonec. so it’s wise not to overestimate the hosts today as the bookies appear to have.

Visitors Brno are on a good run themselves as they’re also unbeaten since returning from the winter break, winning four times and drawing just once against in-form Banik Ostrava. Brno have even won at league leaders Teplice during that run so their confidence is through the roof currently. Brno’s success has stemmed from conceding just one goal in those five games whilst being clinical when chances have come their way. Brno have only lost four out of eleven away games in the Gambrinus Liga this season and with their current momentum on their side, it’s hard to see why the bookies think that Sparta Prague will walk away with this.

To me, this game has “draw” written all over it. Sparta Prague have only beaten Brno once here in their last two home games and Brno are flying high so the odds for laying Sparta Prague look more than generous today.

Verdict: Lay Sparta Prague at 8/5.

Randers vs Esbjerg – home win at 15/8.

These odds are really very dangerous, in my opinion. Are people forgetting that Randers are actually a good side here? They’ve had many problems this season, it’s true, and the curse of European football has hurt them immensely this season to the point where they look likely to be relegated. However, this is the same side that got into European football last season so underestimating them is a really stupid thing to do! Randers have gained some great momentum since returning from the winter break with four consecutive games played without defeat whilst winning their last game at home to AGF Aarhus a few days ago despite trailing at the break, a result which will have boosted their morale considerably due to the manner of their victory. Randers have everything in their favour today and their early season misdemeanors appear to be nothing but memories as they plough onwards to desperately try and avoid the drop.

Visitors Esbjerg have over-achieved this season in a big way and they’re starting to get “found out”, as we say in England. Their draw at home to Randers a few weeks ago was what set Randers off on their good run but Esbjerg have spiralled downwards since then, scraping a victory over bottom club HB Koge and losing their last two games consecutively against a rejuvenated FC Nordsjaelland and a good but struggling OB Odense. Aside from their win against HB Koge, Esbjerg have only scored once during those three games, which shows you where their problems are. They’ve been unconvincing on the road in the Superligaen this season because they’re not a good enough side to be good on the road – it’s that simple.

Esbjerg have won here just once in their last eight visits, losing the majority of them. Esbjerg are over-achieving this season so please don’t overestimate them due to the league table! I personally rate Randers as the better of these two sides irrespective of their poor season and I think Randers have enough momentum with them today to take three points at what is very generous odds indeed.

Verdict: Randers to win at 15/8.

Silkeborg vs HB Koge – lay Silkeborg at 21/10.

These odds truly mystify me! Silkeborg is somehow 3/10 to beat HB koge. Why?! Both of these sides were only promoted to the Superligaen last season and although Silkeborg are definitely the bigger club with bigger history, they’re still not that much better than HB Koge! I’ll grant you that Silkeborg have had a terrific season with battling displays but they’ve started faltering of late because they’re punching above their weight. They’ve only won four out of ten home games this season and have lost their last two games consecutively against good but under-performing sides without even scoring a goal. Silkeborg average scoring two goals per home game in the Superligaen but a lack of goals scored of late leaves them looking worryingly ordinary and even somewhat stretched after an impressive campaign so I certainly wouldn’t be backing them to win this one.

HB Koge enter this game on the back of an impressive victory at giants Brondby. They had lost their previous three games since returning from the winter break but had scored two goals during that time which is an improvement for the bottom club. Although HB Koge are most likely destined for the division below in time for next season, they’re going to be boosted morale-wise after their emphatic win at Brondby last match and will bring that confidence into this game. HB Koge’s downfall has been conceding too many goals on the road this season as they manage to score at least one goal per away game on average so they’re not as bad as people may think.

I’ll accept that this is a risky call but these odds were too good to pass up! Silkeborg aren’t as good as the league placing suggests and aren’t scoring goals whereas HB Koge have got something to take into this game and are scoring goals so laying the hosts at these odds could prove to be a real gift today.

Verdict: Lay Silkeborg at 21/10.

Lyngby vs Viborg – home win at evens.

Lyngby are one of the better sides in the Danish 1st Division and their home record shows that perfectly with seven wins in seven games. They’re the second-highest goalscoring side in the division at home with an average of nearly two goals scored per game so they’re often a threat at home. Lyngby are too big for this division – they need to be back in the Superligaen again because of this and they’re starting to realise that themselves! Lyngby have lost their only game since returning from the winter break but it was an acceptable defeat at league leaders AC Horsens, to be fair, so I wouldn’t be writing them off just yet! Lyngby are constantly reliable at home and whereas their remarkable home record is unlikely to last for their whole campaign, I think they’ll maintain it today.

Visitors Viborg won their first game back from the winter break but in struggling fashion at home to lowly Frem. Viborg are a very capable side as their defensive record shows but their goalscoring record simply isn’t good enough which is why they’re not in the final reckoning for promotion this season. They’ve already lost three out of eight away games this season and whilst this isn’t a condemning record, it does show that a dedicated home side can take points off them, which Lyngby most certainly are.

Although this won’t be a whitewash, I do feel that Lyngby should win this game somewhat comfortably as Viborg don’t offer enough in attack to trouble the potent hosts. Lyngby’s home record is unbelievable and this should propel them to victory today.

Verdict: Lyngby to win at evens.

Stromsgodset vs Viking Stavanger – home win at 7/5.

The bookies have called this one spot on, unfortunately. Both ofthese sides are capble of diong damage in this game butM I’m making the bold call that Stromsgodset will be victorious tonight. Why? Their fortress at Drammen is very reliable – it’s kept them in the division for a number of years now. They won their first home game of the season somewhat comfortably against newly-promoted Kongsvinger and followed it up with a draw at newly-promoted Haugesund but both games showed that Stromsgodset are potent with a total of four goals scored during those two games. No side has an easy ride here and Viking Stavanger know that having lost here for their last three visits successively.

Viking Stavanger are a rich club but continually fail to do anything with it. However, they’ve been playing some good football this season so I’m a tad uneasy with my call today. However, despite playing well away to Valerenga Oslo, Viking Stavanger still lost 2-0 which shows that there is certainly still work to be done. A dominating 4-0 win at home to bitter rivals Brann Bergen will give them confidence and does demonstrate their capability. However, this is a very different game for Viking Stavanger and one that will test their true title credentials for the Eliteserien this season. In my opinion, Viking Stavanger are still too susceptible in defence and not clinical enough when it matters but Stromsgodset have mastered both of those things whilst playing at home so I expect an home win in experienced style for Stromsgodset tonight.

Verdict: Stromsgodset to win at 7/5.

Odra Wodzislaw vs Lech Poznan – away win at 4/5.

This is probably my boldest call of the day; not that it looks it. Odra Wodzislaw have been good since returning from the winter break and are unbeaten in those four games due to a stubborn defence. Despite a win at out-of-form giants Legia Warsaw, Odra Wodzislaw haven’t really been tested since their return however, something that should be proven today hopefully! Odra are generally good at home but they are facing what I would call the best side in Poland currently so I expect them to succumb today in a narrow defeat.

Lech Poznan are flying and scoring goals for fun, which pleases me because they’ve deserved a title for some years now and finally look capable of getting it! They’ve won three out of their four games since returning from the winter break whilst scoring nine times – an average of over two goals per away game, which is virtually an unthinkable average in a goal-shy league like the Ekstraklasa! Lech Poznan are finally fulfilling their potential and challenging Wisla Krakow and Legia Warsaw consistently and this season could be the time that they overcome both of them with both looking rather rocky of late. However, my concern for today lies in the fact that talented striker Robert Lewandowski is missing for the game. He’s scored the majority of their goals this season and they’ll undoubtedly miss him. However, I feel they’ve got enough momentum and creativity to overcome Odra today without him so I’m making a fairly bold call that they will.

Odra are tight defensively and Lech are missing their best striker so we should see a low-scoring game either way. I can’t see it being a classic but I do envision Lech winning this game without their main man as they have done for their last two Ekstraklasa visits here. They’ll also be particularly motivated as they know that they’re under the watchful eyes of scouts from Trabzonspor, Fulham, Hannover 96, and West Bromwich Albion today who are all at the game today so I expect a big display from Lech’s big players, particularly playmaker Krivets.

Verdict: Lech Poznan to win at 4/5.

Spartak Moscow vs Lokomotiv Moscow – away win at 2/1.

Moscow derbies are amongst the hardest to call because there are a lot of big sides in Moscow and they tend to be unpredictable as a result. However, Spartak Moscow have looked shaky this season with no wins in two games, losing their opening game of the season at home to rivals Dinamo Moscow and then drawing at Zenit St.Petersburg. Those results aren’t condemning but they do show that Spaartak aren’t scoring enough goals so Valeri Karpin certainly has his work cut out today.

Visitors Lokomotiv Moscow are such a dangerous side under Yury Semin. He’s a club legend and is a fantastic manager, one of the best in Russia in my opinion. Lokomotiv Moscow under his stewardship are a legitimate title threat and I expect therm to show that this season. They were superb under his guidance last season when he took over but as he took over part-way through the season, the effects of his management weren’t as evident as they should have been by the end of the season. Lokomotiv lost their opening game in a hard-fought battle at reigning champions Rubin Kazan but bounced back by flattening a depleted Krylya Sovetov Samara 3-0 at home so they are a capable side.

Interestingly enough, Lokomotiv Moscow have a better record against Spartak Moscow than the hosts do at Luzhniki in recent years with three wins in their last four visits here. In fact, Spartak Moscow hate playing Lokomotiv Moscow in  general because they almost never beat them, managing this feat just twice in their last ten meetings at either ground in all competitions. Lokomotiv are a real bogey side and I can’t imagine a better time for them to be a bogey side than under inspirational leader Yury Semin.

Verdict: Lokomotiv Moscow to win at 2/1.
