Today’s secondary featured game is the Faroese encounter between NSI Runavik and Vikingur Gotu. Both sides realistically need to win this game to keep their respective Meistaradeildin hopes alive so I expect a good game here.

I like NSI Runavik and I respect the attacking approach that they have to games. Old Christian Jakobsen up front knows how to find the net and he’s looked very strong this year alongside budding youngster Klamint Olsen.  Moretensen, Toronjadze, and Danielsen provide good support for them from midfield and if you let them play then NSI Runavik are a dangerous side to play against. However, their big problem remains taking on good sides. They’ve only won three home games from seven this season and if you consider that they’ve only beaten newly-promoted 07 Vestur Sorvagur, a poor B68 Toftir, and an out-of-sorts HB Torshavn, they’ve not really impressed me. They’ve hosted two good sides – EB/Streymur and B36 Torshavn respectively – and have drawn once and lost once. Even a decent IF Fuglafjordur got a draw against NSI Runavik because if you approach the game correctly then you’ll get points off them. The key to beating this side is to put pressure on them and take your chances – that’s what EB/Streymur and B36 Torshavn do very well and it’s something that Vikingur Gotu do well too. The hosts have looked rather stale over the past month or two, winning just once since mid-May and that was against newly-promoted 07 Vestur Sorvagur. They drew at home to a woeful B71 Sandur in their last home game and drew 0-0 at HB Torshavn in their last game, rarely being threatened but rarely threatening themselves, rather surprisingly. They look a bit demoralised, to be honest – I’m not sure they have the motivation to do anything in games like this nowadays.

Away wins in the Meistaradeildin are never easy to call but Vikingur Gotu do have a terrific record against NSI Runavik. Vikingur have won eight out of their last ten meetings against NSI Runavik and have won four out of their last five visits here, too. Considering they’re entering this game on the back of a morale-boosting 3-1 win against league leaders EB/Streymur – who are the best sides in the Faroes right now, for my money – they have a good chance to take three points here. This side is tight at the back on the road and clinical in front of goal. Finnur Justinussen is in great form and is gradually fulfilling his poetntial as one of the Faroes’ brightest talents in attack. However, there’s no denying that it’s Solvi Vatnhamar runs this team from midfield, either via goalscoring or creating chances. Young Bartalsstovou has been surprisingly good in midfield too this season, as has Jacobsen. Vikingur Gotu may have a rather youthful attack but it’s a talented one with plenty of understanding. Defence is their strongest area, though. Experienced Atli Gregersen holds things together at the back and he’s a named a few of our Scottish viewers may be familiar with as he has had a stint in Scotland. He’s accompanied by the likes of Niclasen and Jacobsen, both of which are experienced too, and this backbone makes Vikingur Gotu hard to beat. Add all that together and you genuinely have one of Vikingur Gotu’s best sides for some time and I think they’ve demonstrated that well this season. They’ve won four consecutive games ahead of this one, scoring freely along the way and considering that the only two sides to avoid losing against them at home this season have been reigning champions EB/Streymur and league leaders B36 Torshavn, I think this is very much a side to fear.

I’m not going to be stupid and say this is a dead cert because it’s not. As it happens, I expect a tight game between two fairly well-matched sides. However, I rate the visitors as being a better team and being much more efficient than their hosts and given their dominant head-to-head record and their strength throughout the team, I can’t help but feel that 9/5 on the away win looks awfully long here.

Verdict: Vikingur Gotu to win at 9/5.
