Olympique Lyonnais vs FC Nantes

Free

Let’s cut to the chase here; Olympique Lyonnais absolutely need three points here. Their lacklustre displays this season have been coming for a long time. They reflect the fact that this side is consistently losing players and not replacing them, so much so that Karim Benzema is the one remaining true bright spark and all hopes are pinned to him. What’s happened lately is that this wonderkid has hit a patch of bad form as every footballer does but because he’s not playing well, his side aren’t. A club the size of Olympique Lyonnais cannot rely on one man, let alone a young man at that! It’s absolutely farcical and they’ll see that when he leaves in summer. Karim Benzema once said he will stay at Olympique Lyonnais until they win the Champions League. I think he’ll leave this summer when he realises that Olympique Lyonnais won’t even be in the Champions League this year if things go as I expect them to! Honestly – take a look at the remaining fixtures for Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain, who are one point behind them. Olympique Lyonnais still have two horrible away games at Olympique de Marseille and Toulouse whereas Paris Saint-Germain have four games that they could conceivably win with ease! Perhaps that’s why Olympique Lyonnais’ chairman Aulas said what he did in January about Manchester City “allegedly” having made a large offer for him and Aulas revealing he’d “consider it” at the end of the season and other such hints being dropped. Anyway, enough about that, onto the game itself!

As I said before, Olympique Lyonnais really need the three points today. However, let’s not ignore the fact that FC Nantes also really need those three points. For that reason alone, this should be a great end-to-end encounter with plenty of chances. Both sides are on dismal runs of form and what is going to win this game is a great performance by an individual, in my eyes. Logically, the side that should win this game is Olympique Lyonnais because they have far more match-winners than the visitors today do. All it takes is a sublime free-kick from Juninho Perambuncano or a piece of skill and composure from Karim Benzema and the game could be won. In the reverse fixture at FC Nantes earlier on in the season, the hosts won the game 2-1. I don’t think Olympique Lyonnais will like that thought very much entering the game and it may just carry them over the finish line towards the three points they desperately crave. The scoreline in my head is 1-0, but any manner of victory whereby the margin is 1 goal isn’t out of the question.
