Padova vs Empoli

Free

Today’s featured game is the Italian Serie B encounter between Padova and Empoli. Padova are a side I expect to be competing for a promotion place at the end of the season due to their quality and Empoli are the side that I expect to make way for them so hopefully we’ll see some evidence of the afore-mentioned in this game between those two sides today.

Padova enter this game on the back of a 4-1 thumping at recently-relegated Atalanta Bergamo, which naturally isn’t the most beneficial of scorelines. However, it reiterates to Padova that there is still work to do and to be honest, Padova are the kind of side that should really respond to that result rather than crawling into their shells, especially as Padova’s strength is in their home games. Indeed, Padova have won five out of six at home this season and drew the other game so their strength is clear to see. They average scoring nearly three goals per home game whilst conceding an average of a goal per every two home games so they’re very much the atypical Serie B home side. However, Padova are a very strong and able outfit as they demonstrated last season despite it being their first year in Serie B following promotion from Serie C. Padova look stronger than ever this year with new signing Davide Succi already proving his weight in gold by bagging ten times in eleven games. With his clinical finishing and the support from Vicente and Di Gennaro in midfield, it’s no surprise to know that only newly-promoted Novara have scored more goals than Padova have this season and any side that intends to travel to Padova to take points must either score a lot of goals against a solid defence or hope for an off day from the hosts, neither of which occur frequently at all, so you can understand why I’m sceptical about Empoli doing so today.

I’m particularly unconvinced by Empoli because they just don’t score goals. Don’t get me wrong here – great credit must go to this giant of Serie B football as they’re the only side in the division to remain unbeaten after twelve rounds of fixtures – but they’re just not a threat in front of goal and especially not away from home. Empoli haven’t travelled well on a consistent basis for many years, something which was emphasised by the fact that only a few sides lost more away games than Empoli did last season, most of which were relegated. Empoli have played six away games this season and although they’ve won two of them, they’ve managed to draw the other four. This isn’t because they’ve played particularly well or incisively – it’s because they’ve defended well. You see, Empoli have lost the ability to score goals since they sold star striker Eder to Brescia at the start of the season and they’ve not made any substantial signings in order to replace him, in my opinion, hence their predicament. There’s no denying that some of Empoli’s players should be playing Serie A football and as a unit, they’re particularly hard to overcome. However, they’re playing one of the most potent sides in the division today and you have to feel that they’re going to concede here so what happens then? Empoli don’t score goals and Padova don’t concede them at home so Empoli could be very awkwardly placed indeed if they’re not careful today. Empoli have failed to score in four out of their last five games in all competitions and although their defence is looking rather immense, I think they may just get caught out today.

The big question is whether Padova will bounce back from their battering at Atalanta Bergamo or not. However, given their ever-present advantage when playing in front of their own fans, you have to fancy them today. Empoli’s record can’t last forever and I feel that if Padova take the lead here then they should win the game. Given that Padova average scoring nearly three goals per home game currently, taking Padova to win the game at 5/4 looks decidedly generous today with the above in mind so that’s my call here.

Verdict: Padova to win at 5/4.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Wacker Innsbruck vs SV Mattersburg – lay Wacker Innsbruck at 6/5.

Wacker Innsbruck are at 1/2 to win this game? Why? It doesn’t make sense to me at all. They had a terrific start to the season as their “honeymoon period” was rather prolonged following promotion from Liga 1. However, they’ve recently ran into difficulties in the shape of heavyweights Salzburg (twice!), Sturm Graz, and Rapid Vienna. It therefore stands to reason that Wacker have lost three out of their last four games and drew the other. Prior to that, Wacker failed to beat Wiener Neustadt in back-to-back games despite Wiener Neustadt being vulnerable in defence as Wacker’s attacking problems continue. Wacker have scored just once in their past six games, hence no wins in six games, losing four along the way. Morale is low, the honeymoon period is well and truly over, and the side aren’t scoring goals – do you think a newly-promoted side is worth 1/2 with the above in mind? I certainly don’t.

Don’t get me wrong here – SV Mattersburg really aren’t a very good side. They’re a decent home side and a semi-decent away side but they’re experienced in beating the drop from the Bundesliga – hell, they’ve been doing it long enough – so they will be confident ahead of this game. Mattersburg have ironically been poor at home lately but good on the road, winning two consecutive away games against LASK Linz and SV Ried respectively, the latter of which was highly impressive, not only because Mattersburg bagged three in that game but also because they faced a rather superior side. Patrick Burger bagged a lot of goals for Hartberg in Liga 1 last season and thus Mattersburg signed him and to his credit, he’s really doing the business with six goals in thirteen games. It’s that kind of signing that could help Mattersburg beat the drop again and he’s the kind of player that I expect to make the difference today.

Again – this is far from a dead cert but there’s no way in fuck that Wacker Innsbruck can command odds of 1/2 here. Wacker’s strength is their enthusiasm and tenacity, neither of which they have at the moment. Mattersburg will stick the bus in front of goal here and look good on the counter-attack too so I really fancy them to cause an upset here. 6/5 is far too long on such an outcome in my opinion so my call is to lay Wacker Innsbruck today.

Verdict: Lay Wacker Innsbruck at 6/5.

Naftan Novopolotsk vs Dnepr Mogilev – home win at evens.

Please approach this one with caution as neither side has anything to play for!

However, I still really like Naftan Novopolotsk to win this one today. The Atlant Stadium is finally a feared venue again with Naftan claiming no less than eight consecutive home wins on the bounce in all competitions as they ruthlessly destroy all before them. Naftan have rediscovered their shooting boots, which is fortuitous as their old advantage of being solid defensively appears to have deserted them. Naftan have beaten giants Shakhtar Soligorsk and Dinamo Minsk here in their last two home games so it’s not like Naftan have faced all the sides that are likely to be relegated. Naftan are a much better side than the Vysshaya Liga table suggests and had the started the season well then they’d be competing for the European places as normal. However, Naftan are going to have to be content with a mid-table finish as they can’t achieve any more this season. Naftan lost their first game in seven at lowly Vitebsk last match but I’d be surprised to see it impact their confidence greatly – Naftan never travel well, they had no reason to win the game, and Vitebsk needed three points desperately – so I suspect Naftan will maintain their usual strong home form today simply because they can – that’s how they’ve got through the last few weeks, basically. Let’s not forget that both Naftan and Dnepr are very much the traditional home side sin Belarus as the head-to-head meetings indicate all too well. Naftan have won this fixture for five consecutive seasons and they’ve only conceded in two of those games so I fancy them to win this one today.

Dnepr Mogilev are another side that is better than their league placing suggests but their European campaign derailed their domestic campaign and although they’re safe from relegation, this campaign has still been unsatisfying for them, I feel. They’ve lost over half of their away games in the Vysshaya Liga this season due to ineptitude in front of goal rather than their usual defensive mayhem which has to be frustrating because they’re always a force on their own turf. Dnepr are really very much like Naftan but slightly inferior nowadays, in my humble opinion, and with no wins in four consecutive games for the visitors and no reason to start now, I can only see that point being emphasised today. They’ve lost four out of their last six on the road with the only two sides they’ve failed to beat being the sides that don’t score many goals at home – the rest have all won their games against Dnepr fairly comfortably, which is what I expect to occur today.

With nothing to play for and two sides that are very similar ability-wise on show, I think over 2.5 goals is worth a thought here, especially as both sides have demonstrated a lack of ability in defence lately. However, given the strong history favouring Naftan Novopolotsk and the massive burst of momentum that they’re on at home, I have to favour the hosts against their poor-travelling opponents whilst the odds are as decent as evens, although I’d leave it if the odds drop – after all, this game is redundant!

Verdict: Naftan Novopolotsk to win at evens.

FC Minsk vs Shakhtyor Soligorsk – over 2.5 goals at evens.

Two big Belarusian sides face each other after very good campaigns and both sides need points from this game to further their European aspirations. Minsk average scoring nearly two goals per home game in the Vysshaya Liga whilst conceding just below a goal per home game wheras Shakhtyor average scoring over a goal per away game. Five out of Shakhtyor’s last six games have gone over 2.5 goals and although Minsk have struggled of late, their strength is still scoring goals so I expect them to do so in this important game. Games between these two sides don’t have a habit of going over 2.5 goals but both sides have to win this game, realistically, and given that both sides have more strength in attack than defence, over 2.5 goals looks a shade generous at evens.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Kortrijk vs Germinal Beerschot – home win at 4/5.

This one really does look too good to be true, which is why bizarrely why I’m sceptical over the chances of it coming in today. Both sides are very much “home sides” and it’s really showing this season. Kortrijk have won five out of six at home this season and Germinal have lost five out of six on the road this season. Neither side is particularly good in front of goal, irrespective of where they’re playing, so generally a goal conceded results in a loss for either side. Germinal have travelled here twice since Kortrijk were promoted and have failed to score on either visit, losing 3-0 here last season. I very much doubt Kortrijk are capable of scoring three goals in the same game this season but Germinal still look likely to lose this game today given their inability in front of goal away from home. Kortrijk managed to beat league leaders Racing Genk in their last home game whereas Germinal were stuffed 5-1 by Mechelen in their last away game. I don’t think there’s much between the two sides on show today in terms of quality but home advantage is the real killer for both sides so to me, 4/5 on the home win is definitely worthy of your consideration today.

Verdict: Kortrijk to win at 4/5.

Millonarios Bogota vs Deportes Tolima – home win at 3/2.

Millonarios Bogota are a funny side! I absolutely hate betting against them because they’re the irritatingly tenacious side that never seem to lose when you bet against them! They’re not a particularly talented side but few sides will ever win away from home against them and Tolima are no exception with two defeats here in their last three visits. Millonarios are tight at the back and that’s the foundation for their relative success and will be a massive factor if they win tonight. Millonarios haven’t been great goalscorers for some time but they’ve won four out of eight whilst only losing twice on their own turf this season because of their solid defence so I expect another solid display tonight. Millonarios may not be as good as Deportes Tolima but the fact that Millonarios have only conceded once in their last four Primera A home games whilst winning three times has impressed me enough to take a chance here.

It aids my bet considerably that league leaders Deportes Tolima were hosting Independiente from Argentina a few days ago so they should be tired tonight. It also aids my bet that they drew the game 2-2, meaning that the return Copa Sudamericana leg in a few days time takes on significant importance as they have to go for the win in Argentina so will surely rest players for this game, which is always dangerous against a gritty Millonarios side.

There’s no denying that Tolima are the better of these two sides but Tolima will surely be resting players here and Millonarios are not an easy side to play against at all as Tolima have found during various visits here in recent years so odds of 3/2 on the home win look intriguing for this game as they look rather generous in my eyes.

Verdict: Millonarios Bogota to win at 3/2.

Banik Ostrava vs Viktoria Plzen – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Banik Ostrava finally woke up with a bang last match as they destroyed Usti nad Labem 0-4 in Teplice last match although it has to be said there was a great deal of fortune there in the sense that Usti nad Labem are shit and missed a whole host of opportunites to score in the second-half. Banik are a long way from the side they were last season, which is understandable after the departures of important striker Tomas Micola and important midfielder Mario Licka last season, both of which moved to Stade Brestois in Ligue 1. Banik brought in emerging Pilik and experienced Senkerik to replace Micola and Frejlach to replace Licka but it’s just not the same side anymore. A disappointing European campaign was brought to a crashing halt before Banik launched into a tirade of poor domestic displays that eventually saw manager Koubek dismissed. For their trip to Usti nad Labem last match, Banik appointed Licka Verner and it’s paid dividends by gifting Banik momentum to take into this game, which is absolutely vital for the out-of-form sleeping giants and gives them a fighting chance here.

It also helps that Viktoria Plzen’s defending is not the best currently with seven goals leaked in their last three games. They’re still looking as potent as they have done all season with a massively impressive eleven goals scored in their last three games too so it pays not to underestimate the current Gambrinus Liga leaders. Striker Jan Rezek is in the form of his career with ten goals in fourteen appearances and with the likes of experienced head Pavel Horvarth, pacey winger Daniel Kolar, and potent Milan Petrzela supporting him, it’s no surprise at all that Viktoria Plzen are doing so well. Their defensive problems do concern me ahead of this game which is the sole reason why I’ve not endorsed the away win at evens as we all saw what happened when they got cocky and tried to take Mlada Boleslav on at an open game in their last away match. I expect a similar type of game here so I’m opting for the same route I did in that game – over 2.5 goals.

Three out of the last five games between these two sides have gone over 2.5 goals and with one side playing well, scoring goals, but not defending well and the other side with “new manager syndrome” (albeit a temporary caretaker manager), I have to feel that this one will go over 2.5 goals today too, although I’d avoid the 1×2 market for this one as it looks to be something of a trap.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Kyoto Sanga vs Kawasaki Frontale – away win at 4/5.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I intended to bet against Kyoto Sanga for the remainder of the season and that hasn’t changed. Why? They’re simply playing like a condemned side. They’re not scoring goals and they’re conceding far too easily, which makes them sitting ducks in a game like this. Kawasaki Frontale aren’t great travellers because they’re one of the worst sides in the J-League defensively when it comes to away games. However, Kyoto’s lack of threat in front of goal should mean that Kawasaki’s atypical one or two goals scored per away game are enough to secure three points for the visitors. The visitors need to take three points from this game to push for a place in next season’s Asian Champions League so there’s no chance of laxity taking over here. I’d usually be concerned about the fight from the home side as most sides tend to work hard to beat the drop but Kyoto Sanga look so dejected and uninterested at the moment that it’s hard not to go against them – it’s like they’ve already accepted their fate. I’d normally not touch Kawasaki at 4/5 on the road but I honestly believe that if they take the lead here then they’ll win the game so the away win does interest me here.

Verdict: Kawasaki Frontale to win at 4/5.

Legia Warsaw vs Jagiellonia Bialystok – over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

The Ekstraklasa is not a league that will often accept an over 2.5 goals game but the odds on this one today look good enough to take a chance on. Why? Well, Legia are getting back to their best and are scoring goals for fun. They’ve re-signed prodigal son Dawid Janczyk in attack, who has spent the last few years in Russia and Belgium respectively and generally getting nowhere. He’s a good striker though and will add potency to Legia’s ranks. Unfortunately for Legia, they still find defending a very uphill task and that won’t be eased today as Jagiellonia welcome back experienced striker Tomasz Frankowski for this game. The visitors can’t score goals without him and the ex-Wisla Krakow striker will surely be additionally keen to get his name on the scoresheet today against his old club’s bitter rivals. I’m expecting an open game here, however, because Jagiellonia don’t travel well and Legia are missing some big players – captain Vrdoljak and defenders Komorowski and Kielbowicz – all three are big losses defensively and Jagiellonia really should score here. Jagiellonia just don’t travel well though and the attacking ability from both Janczyk and Mezenga and re-born midfielder Radovic should give Legia a lot of attacking power against Jagiellonia today. Five out of Legia’s last six games in all competitions have gone over 2.5 goals and two out of Jagiellonia’s last four have gone over 2.5 goals, not to mention the fact that three out of the last four meetings between these two sides have gone over 2.5 goals. Therefore, my call isn’t the obvious home win but the intriguing and rather generous odds of 6/5 on over 2.5 goals.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

LKS Lodz vs Sandecja Nowy Sacz – home win at 9/10.

I can’t summarise this more than by saying that LKS are the better side, really. They’re on a tremendous momentum boost and should be able to make it count again today against over-achieving Sandecja Nowy Sacz. LKS miss Smolinski through suspension but welcome back star striker Mieciel so the loss is minimal at best. Sandecja put up a good fight in most games but they lack the quality that their hosts possess. Sandecja also miss captain Frohlich in defence, which doesn’t help, not to mention midfielder Gawecki although his absence isn’t particularly noticeable. I just feel that LKS are too long at 9/10 for this game – they should be 7/10 at most, in my opinion.

Verdict: LKS Lodz to win at 9/10.
