Today’s secondary featured game is the Eliteserien game between Valerenga Oslo and Molde FK.
Despite possessing some very good players, Valerenga haven’t strung together any kind of consistency this season. As they enter this game, it’s actually the first time this season that they’ve gone three Eliteserien games without defeat, just to back my point up. They’ve actually done well lately, winning at Odd Grenland and Sandnes Ulf respectively. However, you’ll no doubt have noticed that their good displays this season have been far more apparent on the road than they have at home and there’s a good reason for that; they struggle with creativity. On the road, their counter-attacks are dangerous as young Nielsen and especially Pedersen up front are hard to handle, especially with old hand Berre in close proximity. However, try and get this Valerenga side to break down their opponents and they just look awkward and ineffectualy. Only a side without a proper midfield could allow Pedersen to have scored as few goals as he has this season as he’s easily one of the best strikers in the league for my money. Valerenga will get the opportunity to counter-attack here as Molde will attack them but is it enough against a better side that scores more goals than they do? I doubt it.
I watched Molde’s recent trip to Rosenborg and how they left empty-handed is beyond me. They controlled the majority of the game, carved out some excellent chances, and yet somehow failed to take them. Angan was particularly awkward in front of goal, often missing when it was easier to score. That result disappointed me, to be honest, especially as the game went exactly as I thought it would minus the Molde killer touch in front of goal. However, there are positives to be taken from outplaying the biggest side in Norwegian history and I doubt Solskjaer’s boys will have been too disappointed from losing the game, especially if they happened to see Rosenborg’s game with Crusaders on Thursday night in the UEFA Europa League! Molde have a chance to get back to winning ways today and I think that they’re good enough to do it. They play some of the best football in the division and they create amongst the most chances too – they just need to take them! Molde don’t usually travel too well but they’ve only failed to score in one out of their last five Eliteserien away games and that was in their 1-0 defeat at Rosenborg so I’ll lend them a bit of my faith today.
Molde’s defence isn’t great so don’t be surprised if they concede here. However, they should have too much going forward for Valerenga to handle and thus the away win appeals to me at 6/5.
